Solar power illuminates Chhattisgarh's 'best tourism village' Dhudmaras
The United Nations World Tourism Organization last year included Dhudmaras among the selected 20 villages of the world for development in terms of tourism.
Blessed with natural beauty, cultural richness and traditional tribal life, Dhudmaras, located in the Kanger Valley National Park in Bastar district, about 350 km from capital Raipur, attracts tourists for its exciting adventure activities.
The Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency has successfully executed a number of solar projects in Dhudmaras recently, CREDA Chief Executive Officer Rajesh Rana said.
The projects include the installation of three solar dual pumps to ensure access to clean drinking water, two solar high-mast lights and solar-powered street lights throughout the village. Both primary and secondary schools have also been equipped with reliable solar electricity, enabling better learning environments, he said.
According to local officials, this remote village has access to electricity lines but the power connection was limited to a few houses and the power supply was uneven and inadequate.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, solar energy projects have been implemented across Bastar region, bringing tangible improvements to the lives of residents and the local tourism infrastructure, an official statement said.
CREDA Chairman Bhupendra Savanni and CEO Rajesh Rana have been monitoring the implementation of these initiatives to ensure high-quality execution and long-term impact, it said.
Last year, on World Tourism Day, the Union Ministry of Tourism awarded Dhudmaras and Chitrakote villages in Bastar district as the best tourism villages in Bastar.
With its lush greenery, rich biodiversity, the scenic Kanger river, and the vibrant Bastaria tribal culture, Dhudmaras is fast becoming a major attraction for both domestic and international tourists, the release said.
Under the state government's eco-tourism vision, trekking trails, camping sites and homestay facilities are being developed around Dhudmaras.
Traditional artisans and performers are being supported to promote and market local handicrafts, while roads and transport infrastructure are being strengthened, it said.
Adventure tourism is also on the rise, with the Eco-Tourism Development Committee in Dhudmaras organising kayaking and bamboo rafting on the Kanger river, providing livelihood opportunities for local youth.
Basic amenities like waiting areas and public toilets are being set up at the community level, enhancing the overall tourist experience, the release said.
The state's forest and tourism departments have been working systematically to develop Dhudmaras as a flagship eco-tourism destination.
Inspired by its success, similar initiatives are being promoted in other villages like Nagalsar and Netanar.
"Dhudmaras is a living proof that with government support and community participation, economic, social, and cultural transformation is possible even in remote rural areas," the release said.
It now stands as a model village and source of inspiration for the entire Bastar region, the release added.

Chhattisgarh cabinet approves new rules to curb illegal sand mining
Raipur, Jul 30 (PTI) The Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday decided to introduce new rules to prevent illegal sand mining and transportation, officials said. Among other things, the new rules provide for electronic auction of sand mines. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai at Mantralaya (Mahanadi Bhawan) in Nava Raipur, a statement said. To cabinet gave its nod to repeal the existing Chhattisgarh Minor Mineral (Sand Mining and Trade) Rules, 2019, and Chhattisgarh Minor Mineral (Sand Mining and Trade in Scheduled Areas) Rules, 2023, it said. They would be replaced by the `Chhattisgarh Minor Mineral (Sand Mining and Trade) Rules, 2025′. 'The new rules are aimed at curbing illegal sand mining and transportation through strict measures and ensuring that sand is made available to the general public at fair prices. The new rules also mandate strict adherence to environmental and safety standards," the release said. Allotment of sand mines will now be done through electronic auctions which is expected to bring in greater transparency and increase revenue. In another key decision, the cabinet also gave the nod to amendments to the Chhattisgarh District Mineral Foundation Trust Rules, 2015, in line with the new guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Mines and the revised guidelines under the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana (PMKKKY)-2024, the release said. Under the revised framework, a minimum of 70% of funds available with the Trust shall be utilised for high-priority sectors such as drinking water supply, environmental conservation, pollution control, health, education, agriculture, welfare of women and children, welfare of the elderly and differently-abled persons, as well as skill development and employment, sanitation, housing, and holistic development of animal husbandry, it said. In another decision, the cabinet also approved a proposal from the Department of Commercial Tax (Registration) regarding the determination of market value of agricultural land, it said. As per the approved changes, the existing provision of evaluating rural agricultural plots up to 500 square metres separately will be abolished. Instead, valuation will be carried out uniformly based on hectare rates for the entire landholding, the release said. The move aims to prevent irregularities such as those witnessed in the Bharatmala Project and the Arpa-Bhaisajhar region of Bilaspur. For villages adjacent to urban limits and for lands situated in designated investment zones, market rates will now be fixed on a per square metre basis, it said. The cabinet also decided to allot 7.96 acres of land to the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association (CSCS) in Sector-3, Village Parsada, Nava Raipur (Atal Nagar), for establishing a state-of-the-art cricket academy. Better air connectivity will woo foreigners: Khaunte
Porvorim: Improved air connectivity and not visa-on-arrival, will help attract foreigners to the state, said tourism minister Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday. Khaunte told the assembly that govt is working with airlines, the Centre and foreign countries to try and bring in more flights to Goa's two airports. 'Visa-on-arrival is not the game-changer, connectivity is. Improving connectivity should take priority over pushing for a visa-on-arrival policy,' the minister said while speaking on the discussion for grants for the tourism department. Khaunte also said the direct flight between Mopa airport and Gatwick airport will resume before the coming charter season begins. Air India cancelled its Goa-Gatwick direct flight in the aftermath of the tragic accident in Ahmedabad that killed 241 people. 'We have spoken to Air India, the chief minister has spoken to them, and they have promised us that most likely they will resume the Goa-Gatwick flight by Sep-end. They had some operational issues,' said Khaunte. He also cautioned travellers against booking hotels operated by fly-by-night operators or on portals that have a sketchy history. 'Fly-by-night operators are cheating tourists. We are amending the laws for better enforcement,' said Khaunte. The minister announced that this year's World Tourism Day celebrations will be extended into a month-long series of events. GFP MLA Vijai Sardesai contradicted Khaunte's claims of an increase in tourist arrivals. 'Tourists have increased, says the minister, but are these contributing to Goa? Shack owners, taxi owners and hotels say their income is down. Shacks are empty,' said Sardesai. ________________ 'Excavation at Old Goa halted, CM to decide' Porvorim: Excavation for a tourist facilitation centre at the Old Goa heritage complex could unearth 'a lot more' and could create a 'sensitive' situation in the state, said tourism minister Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday, citing an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report. Khaunte said excavation has been halted till chief minister Pramod Sawant takes a decision, given the implications that the results of the excavation could have. 'The ASI has given us the survey report recently and it says that if you excavate, a lot more will be found. Did you understand what I said? If we dig, we will find a lot of things from the past. Not just cannonballs,' Khaunte said. Excavation at the heritage site initially uncovered Portuguese-era cannonballs and ruins of a Portuguese armoury, leading the ASI to conduct a survey to document the findings. 'We are awaiting the CM's decision. We are in no hurry to do anything,' Khaunte said. TNN
