Anwar, Modi explore deeper trade ties, Indian Institute of Technology campus in Malaysia at Brics sidelines
'We discussed the significant potential for expanding strategic cooperation between Malaysia and India in various fields, including trade, investment, digital technology, and defence,' Anwar said in a statement released after their meeting.
He also welcomed Indian companies' interest in investing in future-oriented sectors in Malaysia such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy and the aerospace industry.
'We are also committed to continuing to strengthen people-to-people relations through cooperation in the areas of culture, tourism, and education, which includes the proposal to set up the IIT campus in Malaysia,' he said.
IITs are a group of premier engineering and technology institutes in India.
Both leaders also emphasised the importance of ensuring regional peace and stability, and expressed support for just and peaceful resolutions to international issues such as Palestine and Jammu-Kashmir.
Anwar said Malaysia welcomed efforts to strengthen Asean–India relations with the Asean–India Summit scheduled to be held in October, in line with the spirit of cooperation for mutual benefit.
'May the strong ties between Malaysia and India continue to grow for the benefit and well-being of the people of both nations,' he added.
Anwar, who is also the minister of finance, described the meeting as brief but solid with meaningful content.
Both leaders last met during the 21st Asean-India Summit in Laos last year.
During the latest meeting, Anwar was accompanied by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. Also present was India's Minister of External Affairs S. Jaishankar.
Malaysia is India's third-largest trading partner in Asean, with total trade valued at US$20.02 billion (RM84.5 billion) in 2023-2024, accounting for about 17 per cent of India's total trade with Asean.
Anwar arrived here on Saturday to attend the Brics summit hosted by Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Malaysia officially became a Brics Partner Country on January 1 this year. — Bernama

Over 400 elephant-related complaints in Terengganu since 2020, says state official
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 7 — A total of 422 elephant-related complaints have been recorded in Terengganu from 2020 to April this year, according to the state Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). State Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim said Hulu Terengganu and Kemaman reported the highest number of cases, with 128 each, followed by Setiu (94), Dungun (53), Besut (16), Kuala Nerus (2) and Marang (1). 'In 2020, there were 54 complaints, rising to 63 in 2021, 53 in 2022, 109 in 2023 and 114 in 2024. Between January and April this year, 29 complaints involving human-elephant conflict were received,' he told the State Legislative Assembly at Wisma Darul Iman today. He was responding to Azmi Maarof (PAS-Langkap), who asked about state-level efforts to address crop damage caused by wild elephants. Dr Azman said mitigation efforts include fitting satellite collars on elephants to track their movements and behaviour. 'To date, two elephants have been collared, including one still active in the TDM plantation in Cherul, Kemaman,' he said, adding that the collars also function as an early warning system to help authorities plan timely responses and reduce elephant incursions. — Bernama

Mohd Naim calls for tighter regulation of independent Islamic preachers amid sex video scandal
KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Naim Mokhtar today reminded Islamic preachers and missionaries, especially those operating independently, to always adhere to the ethics and guidelines set by the respective state religious authorities. He said that the process of screening the background, character and qualifications of independent preachers and missionaries who operate without the recognition or supervision from an authoritative institution also needs to be strengthened to ensure the teachings delivered bring benefit, not slander. 'I would like to remind every preacher, missionary and individual who carries the image of Islam, especially independent religious figures, to always uphold good morals, integrity, and self-respect in accordance with Islamic teachings. 'Holding the position of a preacher is not a licence to exploit religion for personal gain or to engage in immoral or unlawful behaviour,' he said in a Facebook post today. Mohd Naim said the MADANI Government is also committed to strengthening a more structured, professional, and integrity-driven preaching ecosystem. In this regard, he said, his office, together with Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (YADIM), organised programmes such as Felo Muda Dakwah (FMD) and Akademi Daie Muda YADIM (ADMY), which focused on efforts to produce young preachers in the country. 'To date, 364 individuals have undergone intensive training under both programmes since they were introduced in 2014. This is part of the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs)'s ongoing effort to produce preachers who embody the values of a MADANI ummah,' he said. Commenting on a recent case involving an independent speaker suspected of disseminating sex videos, Mohd Naim said the incident had serious negative implications, not only damaging the dignity of the individual involved but also tarnishing the image of the dakwah institution and undermining public trust in religious leadership. He also urged the public to give the authorities space to conduct a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation and not to be hasty in making sweeping generalisations or judgments. 'At the same time, we must firmly reject the culture of public shaming one another, especially when it is driven by motives of influence-seeking or personal intention,' he said It was previously reported that the police had arrested a freelance preacher suspected of distributing several explicit videos and images allegedly aimed at shaming his wife and other women. — Bernama
