Puri Rath Yatra: 3 Dead, 50 Injured in Odisha Stampede
New Delhi: At least three people have died while 50 others were injured in a stampede near Shree Gundicha Temple in Odisha's Puri on Sunday (June 29).
Puri district collector Siddharth S. Swain said the incident took place around 4 am when the crowd near the temple swelled. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital where six remain in critical condition, he added.

The bodies have been sent for postmortem and an investigation is underway, the report said.
A lesson not learned
Days before the stampede, former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik had criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over lapses in arrangement made for the annual Rath Yatra.
On Friday (June 27), more than 700 devotees were hospitalised due to a stampede-like situation and heat exhaustion.
In addition to the stampede-like situation, the Nandighosha chariot, which was the last to be towed, could not move forward due to the large crowd surrounding it.
Slamming the Mohan Majhi government over these lapses in a post on X, Patnaik said, 'And now this year, we witnessed Nandighosha ratha still standing at the Singhadwar till 7:45 p.m., only to move a few metres before the day ended. That understandably has left lakhs of devotees who came from all over the world to witness this unique event completely disenchanted and disillusioned. Hundreds of devotees also got injured due to poor crowd management.'
Patnaik also referred to reports in local media suggesting that ministers in the state government had provided entry passes for the inner cordon to a large number of supporters, which had led to the delay.

MP govt approves Rs 12.16 crore for 2nd phase of 'Ambedkar Dham' in Gwalior
Gwalior: The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)-led Madhya Pradesh government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 12 crore for the second phase of construction of a memorial of B.R. Ambedkar in Gwalior, party sources told IANS on Monday. The memorial -- 'Ambedkar Dham' is being established as a grand centre for education, inspiration, and social unity in Jaurasi village under Dabra tehsil of Gwalior district. The facilities being constructed at Ambedkar Dham include a digital library, museum, auditorium, and conference hall along with huge size library, according to an earlier statement by the Madhya Pradesh government. The first phase of construction, for which the state government had allocated Rs 8 crore, is underway. The second memorial of Ambedkar is being established in Madhya Pradesh, the first one was established at his birthplace Mhow in Indore. A recommendation for allocation of Rs 12 crore for the second phase of construction work was made by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in November last year. In his letter to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav (on November 26, 2024), Union Minister Scindia had mentioned that due to delay in allocation of fund, the second phase of construction of Ambedkar's memorial was affected. A notification issued on June 28 available with IANS, revealed that the state government has allocated a total of Rs 12,16,46,000 for the second phase construction work of 'Ambedkar Dham'. During his visit to Gwalior on June 28, CM Yadav had held an inspection and announced that the second phase construction work will start by the first week of July. During his inspection visit, the Chief Minister highlighted that both the Central and state governments continue to honour the legacy of Ambedkar. A grand memorial has already been established at Mhow, where an annual Ambedkar Kumbh is organised on his birth anniversary. During his visit at the memorial's construction site, CM Yadav had alleged that when Ambedkar's mortal remains were transported to Mumbai's Chaitya Bhoomi, his wife had paid the entire expenses. "Congress didn't give a portion of land in New Delhi to perform the last rites of Ambedkar, and when his mortal remains were flown to Mumbai, the Congress government took air expenses from his wife. This is what the Congress did with Ambedkar," the Chief Minister said. This development is taking place amid the Congress and BJP engaged in a political war of words over the installation of Ambedkar's statue at the premises of the Gwalior bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

BJP core committee lays out road plan for local body polls
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) core committee, which met here on Monday, reportedly saw a better chance of the party emerging as a reliable third alternative to the Left Democratic Front- United Democratic Front 'revolving door' politics in the 2025 local body polls and the 2026 Assembly elections. A BJP insider said the Congress' 'lacklustre' showing in the Nilambur Assembly byelection had buoyed the party's hopes for a better showing in the elections that lay ahead. He said the core committee's reading was that the Congress had failed to cash in on the 'anti-incumbency' anger against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government fully. Later, former BJP State president K. Surendran told a press conference that the Congress had merely held on to a traditional stronghold wrested from it by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) using an Independent candidate. He said the voting pattern in Nilambur revealed the Opposition United Democratic Front's (UDF) inherent electoral weaknesses, which the BJP would exploit to its full advantage. Mr. Surendran said the BJP was initially not keen on contesting the Nilambur bypoll at the fag end of the second Pinarayi Vijayan government. 'The bypoll was of scarce political or electoral consequence. Still, the BJP kept its options open,' he said. Asaduddin Owaisi accuses BJP of ignoring real ‘threats', focusing only on illegal immigration
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Sunday (June 29, 2025) accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of neglecting pressing national security challenges by concentrating solely on the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Addressing a public rally in Maharashtra's Parbhani, Mr. Owaisi said the Union Government was overlooking significant geopolitical developments along India's eastern frontier, particularly the growing defence cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan, as well as reports of a Chinese airbase being constructed near the Bangladesh border. 'They keep talking about Bangladeshi people settling in India illegally. They (BJP) even claim that Bangladeshis have reached Parbhani. Let me tell them — no Bangladeshi will dare to come to Parbhani,' he said. 'Instead of talking about the development of Parbhani, creating jobs, improving healthcare, or addressing recent murder cases, this government is busy dividing people on religious lines, inciting riots, and demolishing mosques.
