ECRL's success validates BN's competency in planning mega projects, says Pahang MCA Youth chief

The Star08-05-2025
PETALING JAYA: The success of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project shows Barisan Nasional's competence in planning major public transportation projects that benefit the people, says Pahang MCA Youth chief Wong Siew Mun.
She welcomed the Transport Minister's announcement that the project, through the ECRL Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI-ECRL), which will generate 3,200 job opportunities.
"Unfortunately, the project was politicised by the then-opposition, who alleged that the Barisan government was 'selling the country' to China merely because China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) was a partner in the project.
"Now, the ECRL project continues and is now being proudly championed by the Transport Minister (Anthony Loke) as a testament to the country's commitment to developing its rail network and building a better future for the nation," she said in a statement on Thursday (May 8).
On Tuesday, Loke announced that the PLKI-ECRL was focused on preparing for the Operations and Maintenance Manual (O&M) phase for the ECRL project, and projected that it would benefit a total of 3,200 trainees during this phase.
Wong said there was an undeniable sense of pride seeing mega projects initiated by the previous Barisan government still bringing benefits to the people and the country, even though it was relentlessly politicised and slandered, leading to a change of government in the 2018 General Election.
"One can only wonder how much better things could have been if Barisan's mega projects had not been irresponsibly politicised or turned into targets of slander by the Opposition.
"Imagine the benefits the rakyat could already be enjoying today and the economic spillover that would have been realised had these projects not been delayed due to vindictive politics.
"It is hoped that politicians will be more responsible in their conduct and refrain from hurling baseless accusations or slander merely to gain political mileage by inciting public anger and hatred," she added.

ECRL Project On Track To Meet Deadlines, Phase 1 Expected To Complete By December 2026

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project has reached 86.07 per cent completion as of July and is firmly on track to meet its targeted deadlines, according to Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) chairman and Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar. He said Phase 1 of the 665-kilometre railway, which spans from Kota Bharu to the Gombak Integrated Terminal, is expected to be completed by December 2026 and commence operations in January 2027, while Phase 2, which continues from Gombak to Port Klang, is targeted for completion in December 2027, with full operations beginning in January 2028. 'Insya-Allah, these plans will materialise, bringing both convenience to the people and economic spillovers to the nation,' Shamsul said at the launch of the RHB-MRL 360-Degree ESG (environmental, social and governance) Financing Ecosystem here today. MRL, the project owner, is spearheading the ECRL's development with RHB Bank as one of the core financial institutions backing the massive infrastructure. Shamsul Azri said the ECRL sets a strong example in supporting Malaysia's ESG agenda as the project features 41 tunnels, 154 kilometres of elevated tracks, and 28 wildlife crossings - all strategically designed to reduce intrusion into forest reserves and water catchment areas, while minimising impact on wildlife habitats. 'Additionally, the fully electrified 665-kilometre network is expected to cut carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by one million tonnes annually once operations begin in 2027,' he said. In line with MRL's commitment to sustainability, Shamsul Azri highlighted a historic milestone achieved in February 2024, when MRL became the first company under the Ministry of Finance, and the only transport infrastructure project in the country, to be financed through green Islamic instruments. As part of this commitment, he said MRL launched a Sustainable and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Sukuk Programme worth up to RM10.21 billion, marking the first government-guaranteed SDG sukuk in Malaysia and representing a major step toward enhancing sustainable financing in the transport sector. 'The success of this SDG sukuk has been widely recognised, both locally and regionally, through prestigious awards, underscoring the government's leadership in sustainable infrastructure and setting a benchmark for future SDG-aligned projects,' he said.

Luxury car owners must settle dues before release says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: Owners of seized luxury vehicles must clear all outstanding dues before their cars are released, Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed. He stressed that expired road tax and insurance cases require full payment, including fines, with no exceptions. Loke dismissed claims that some owners preferred paying a RM300 fine over renewing road tax due to lower costs. 'Vehicles seized for expired road tax and insurance will only be released after all payments are settled,' he said. This includes road tax, insurance coverage, and compound fines, with no shortcuts available. He spoke after launching the Pandasafe programme by Foodpanda today. Many owners wrongly assume the RM300 fine is sufficient, Loke noted, emphasising strict enforcement for road safety. When asked about increasing the compound, he said the ministry is reviewing the proposal but changes require legal amendments. The Road Transport Department (RTD) has been actively seizing non-compliant vehicles as part of enforcement efforts. Earlier reports identified over 1,000 luxury cars with long-expired road tax, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches. Some owners, including celebrities and business figures, claimed these were only used as weekend cars. - Bernama
