ECRL's success validates BN's competency in planning mega projects, says Pahang MCA Youth chief
PETALING JAYA: The success of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project shows Barisan Nasional's competence in planning major public transportation projects that benefit the people, says Pahang MCA Youth chief Wong Siew Mun. She welcomed the Transport Minister's announcement that the project, through the ECRL Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI-ECRL), which will generate 3,200 job opportunities. "Unfortunately, the project was politicised by the then-opposition, who alleged that the Barisan government was 'selling the country' to China merely because China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) was a partner in the project. "Now, the ECRL project continues and is now being proudly championed by the Transport Minister (Anthony Loke) as a testament to the country's commitment to developing its rail network and building a better future for the nation," she said in a statement on Thursday (May 8). On Tuesday, Loke announced that the PLKI-ECRL was focused on preparing for the Operations and Maintenance Manual (O&M) phase for the ECRL project, and projected that it would benefit a total of 3,200 trainees during this phase. Wong said there was an undeniable sense of pride seeing mega projects initiated by the previous Barisan government still bringing benefits to the people and the country, even though it was relentlessly politicised and slandered, leading to a change of government in the 2018 General Election. "One can only wonder how much better things could have been if Barisan's mega projects had not been irresponsibly politicised or turned into targets of slander by the Opposition. "Imagine the benefits the rakyat could already be enjoying today and the economic spillover that would have been realised had these projects not been delayed due to vindictive politics. "It is hoped that politicians will be more responsible in their conduct and refrain from hurling baseless accusations or slander merely to gain political mileage by inciting public anger and hatred," she added.

Focus on internal strength
PM: We cannot rely on external support if we want to move forward KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's progress must be anchored on its own internal strength and the development of its domestic economic resilience, instead of relying on external factors amid global uncertainties, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said he had told Parliament during Monday's special sitting to discuss the 24% US tariff on Malaysian products that the country should take a firm stance but reject any form of unilateral action. 'If Malaysia wants to move forward and stand confidently, we must not only rely on external support. 'We must build internal strength, which is what we call domestic economic resilience. That is what we must work on,' he said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the launch of employment opportunities and presentation of East Coast Rail Link Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI-ECRL) offer letters for ECRL operation and maintenance phase yesterday. Anwar said that Malaysia must always seek new methods in dealing with any challenges. 'This responsibility lies with our youth. They must master knowledge better than the current generation. 'God willing, with this kind of approach, we will be more secure in the future. The country must remain peaceful, stable and governed by clear policies,' he said. Citing a few examples, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that he had held meetings with leaders and corporations from various countries, including the United States, Japan and Bahrain. 'In the semiconductor sector, we are not left behind. However, the technology we are currently working with is still primarily focused on the backend. 'It's limited to manufacturing and processing capabilities. It doesn't yet include what's known as advanced packaging or advanced design. 'Now, amid all these ongoing discussions and challenges, the company stated their intention to make Malaysia their base for advanced packaging and advanced designs, specifically in Penang and Cyberjaya. 'And of course, I welcomed them,' he said, adding that the government will provide all the necessary facilities and government support. Anwar also noted he had earlier met with Japan's former prime minister Fumio Kishida, who was sent on behalf of Japan's Prime Minister, to discuss new projects with Asean and Malaysia, particularly on new renewable energy. 'At a time when we're grappling with what steps to take next, companies from various countries are coming forward. 'Japan has also committed, on behalf of its Prime Minister, to directly participate in development projects,' said Anwar. He added that he had met with two ministers from Bahrain to discuss plans on how they could enter the Malaysian market, invest and enhance their economic and trade capabilities. At the end of the month, Anwar said that the country will host the Asean-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit involving all the Asean countries and six Gulf nations.

M'sia must focus on building economic resilience through youth expertise, says Anwar
Anwar speaking during the employment opportunities and presentation of PLKI-ECRL's offer letters ceremony for the ECRL operation and maintenance (O&M) phase today. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (May 6): Malaysia must build domestic economic resilience by enhancing knowledge and expertise among youths to better face global challenges, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said this approach is crucial to enable the nation to rely on its capabilities, ensuring greater stability and security amid global economic uncertainties. 'We must first strengthen from within… our domestic economic resilience. Although we use foreign technologies, we must seek new methods, and this depends on our young people. 'With clear policies, it means we rely more on our abilities, to revitalise local businesses, management and expertise,' he said at the launch of the employment opportunities and presentation of PLKI-ECRL's offer letters ceremony for the ECRL operation and maintenance (O&M) phase here today. Anwar urged young Malaysians given opportunities to study and train abroad to remain disciplined and apply the knowledge and skills they acquire to become a better generation. Anwar highlighted Malaysia's growing prominence in the global semiconductor industry and credited local expertise as a key factor driving foreign investment into the country. Citing the semiconductor sector as a model of how domestic capabilities can attract international players, Anwar shared that Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) — one of the world's largest semiconductor companies — has expressed its intention to establish advanced packaging and design operations in Penang and Cyberjaya. 'Malaysia is not falling behind in the semiconductor space, though much of our capability is currently focused on the back-end manufacturing process,' Anwar said. '(In my meeting with the company), I immediately welcomed their interest as this means our young talents will be trained and empowered in fields such as semiconductor technology, artificial intelligence and packaging advanced design, placing us at the front end of the industry,' he said. The prime minister said a similar approach should also be adopted by the country's energy industry, such as solar energy, following the United States' recent imposition of tariffs on China. 'The United States has imposed high tariffs on any solar production that is based in China or operated by Chinese companies. 'So, are we just going to give up without taking advantage of this situation? We must be prepared to take action by using locally produced solar panels on our buildings, whether they are government or private, schools or hospitals,' he said. At the event, Anwar also presented offer letters to several trainees who will undergo a one-year intensive training programme in Liuzhou, China, under the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI). The first group, consisting of 102 individuals, is scheduled to depart for China in stages from May 15. – Bernama anwar ibrahim domestic economic resilience ECRL lead tariffs
