Dr G's U-turn, says Tumakuru won't be called Bengaluru North
TUMAKURU: Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara on Saturday made a U-turn on his idea of renaming Tumakuru district as Bengaluru North.
'Our art and culture are different, on which we will never compromise. Tumakuru will not be renamed Bengaluru North. But it is true that Tumakuru is growing fast, and our efforts to get the Namma Metro network extended to the district and to invite more industries here will continue,' Parameshwara said at the 75th birthday celebrations of Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna in Tumakuru.
His statement came after writer Baraguru Ramchandrappa took strong exception to the idea of renaming Tumakuru.
'Our district is culturally and educationally rich and a gateway to education. The script for Kannada's first movie, 'Sati Sulochana', in 1934 was written by Bellavi Narahari Shastri, film lyricist Chi Udayashankar, writer Tee Nam Srikantaiah, and actor Narasimharaju all hailed from the district. Both Parameshwara and Rajanna should take care of safeguarding the district's identity,' Baraguru had suggested.
'Development doesn't mean just inviting capitalists. They should come as devotees and not God,' he had said.
Parameshwara had earlier reportedly said that a proposal has been placed before the government to rename Tumakuru as Bengaluru North, as it will make a big difference in attracting investments as the new name will be more appealing.
Union MoS V Somanna, Siddaganga Mutt seer Sri Siddalinga Swamiji, and BJP Tumakuru Rural MLA B Suresh Gowda had opposed the move, saying that Tumakuru's identity would be lost if it is renamed.

English is not shame, it is power. English is not a chain - it is a tool to break the chains. BJP-RSS don't want poor kids of India to learn English - because they don't want you to ask questions, move ahead, and become equal,' the Congress leader said in a post on X. While also highlighting that every language is useful and beautiful for its culture, knowledge, and soul, the party leader added, 'In today's world, English is as important as your mother tongue - because it will provide employment and boost your confidence. The Congress leader's remarks were in response to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks, where he said that the languages of India are 'ornaments of our culture,' and to understand the land's history, dharma cannot be done in foreign languages. New Delhi [India], June 22 (ANI): An Indian delegation led by Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth will visit Kenya and Madagascar from June 23 to 26, 2025, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence. As per the statement, in the first leg, MoS Defence will visit Kenya for the joint unveiling of the Commemorative Pillar (War memorial honouring the fallen soldiers of India and Kenya) at Taita-Taveta County on June 23. According to the release, the second leg would see the Minister visiting Madagascar on June 26 to celebrate the 65th Anniversary of Madagascar's Independence and the creation of the Malagasy Armed Forces at Antananarivo. India and Kenya are maritime neighbours. Contemporary ties between the two countries are marked by high-level exchanges, robust trade and investment, medical-value travel from Kenya, and extensive people-to-people contacts. The two nations share a common legacy of struggle against colonialism. Many Indians participated in and supported the freedom struggle in Kenya. According to the official statement, India and Madagascar enjoy a multifaceted relationship rooted in historical ties, shared values, and a commitment to regional stability and development. The partnership spans political, military, economic, and diplomatic domains, underscoring a shared vision for mutual growth and collaboration.
