Unbeaten Northern on target in bad weather
Nick Treadwell and Amasio Jutel scored to beat Queens Park 2-0 at Logan Park on Saturday, taking them eight points at the top of the table.
Queens Park defensive pairing Tom Kent and Rodrigo Schmidt De Camargo were keeping Northern strike force Rory Hibbert and Treadwell quiet.
For the opening period they looked the more likely side to break the deadlock.
Northern came into the match midway through the first half and their first attempt on 20 minutes was a 25-yard effort from Nicholas Brett that went narrowly past the post.
Northern were starting to gain ascendancy and four minutes later Kim Gorman got to the byline and saw his cross hit the crossbar.
A minute later Northern took the lead through Treadwell.
He was in the right spot to react to the loose ball to tap home from close range.
Just before the halftime break Queens Park nearly equalised when a long-range free kick was sent into the penalty box and Zack Owen-Gear saw his header flash narrowly wide of the far post.
Northern did hit the post in the opening seconds of the restart when Hibbert's shot came back off the post.
Queens Park again threatened from a long free kick that saw Schmidt De Camargo's bicycle kick land on the roof of the net.
However, Northern rode the storm and made the game safe in the 54th minute when the ball was played across field to Jutel in an advanced position on the left.
He cut inside, beating his man and bending his shot into the top right-hand corner, giving goalkeeper Mitchell Fowler no chance.
Otago University finished the round in second spot, beating Dunedin City Royals 4-1, also at Logan Park.
The Royals started well but University took the lead with their first serious attack after a series of corners Warryk Hodson scored on 13 minutes.
The students doubled their lead six minutes later when Josh Kotkamp combined with Sam Murray and Kotkamp bent his shot past keeper Jonathan Tucker.
Tucker did extremely well early in the second half to deny Simba Muwunganirwa from point blank range clattering into the post as a result, but wasn't able to deny Ashton Hodson making it 3-0 after 54 minutes.
Kantaro Nagata pulled one back for the Royals just after the hour mark, however the final scoring was Ashton Hodson's injury time penalty giving University the win.
Green Island beat Old Boys in Invercargill 3-1 to pull away from the relegation zone.
First-half goals to Ryan Walker and Phil Yeardley were added to by Harrison McClean's 50th minute strike, William Fleming scoring Old Boys consolation goal.
In the men's South Island league, the Otago derby between Wānaka and Dunedin City Royals was washed out due to an unplayable field.
The Dunedin City Royals women's South Island league team were able to get their match under way and had a comfortable routine 2-0 victory over NW United at Logan Park.
Raegan Potter bagged her sixth goal of the campaign in the 20th minute and Hannah Mackay-Wright's 51st minute goal made sure the Royals 100% record remained intact after nine rounds.
Yesterday, Georgia Nixon scored twice as Otago University drew 2-2 with Halswell United at Logan Park.
Halswell took an early lead through Ella Hartel, before Nixon equalised in the 49th minute.
Amelia Wilson edged the visitors ahead once more 10 minutes later, but Nixon drew level and secured a point for University from the spot in the 71st minute.

Alexandra to host opening Super Smash games again
Basking in the Central Otago sun is hard to pass up at the best of times. Add in a couple of games of cricket and you have yourself a good day out. The Otago Sparks and the Otago Volts are taking their opening Super Smash games to sunny Alexandra again with the fixtures the first in their 2025-26 T20 seasons. They will open their campaigns at Molyneux Park — against the Canterbury Magicians and Canterbury Kings respectively — on December 28. They will then meet the Central Hinds and Central Stags on December 30. Alexandra has proved a popular spot for the opening fixtures in recent seasons, and this year is sure to be no different. Doubleheaders remain in the Super Smash this season with the Otago Sparks and Otago Volts playing at the same ground on the same day. Otago then hit the road for a stretch of away games in the new year against Northern (January 4), Auckland (January 6) and Wellington (January 9). Super Smash will then make a welcome return to the University Oval, where the Otago teams will host a spate of home clashes. They meet Auckland (January 12), Wellington (January 15) and Northern (January 18) in Dunedin, before heading away for their final two round robin games against Canterbury (January 21) and Central (January 24). Both finals series will be held at Christchurch's Hagley Oval this season. The men's and women's elimination finals will be held on January 30 and the finals on January 31. The Otago Sparks will be looking to go one better later this year after being runners-up in the 2024-25 women's Super Smash final. After being one of the most dominant teams throughout the year, the Sparks — who went on to win the one-day Hallyburton Johnstone Shield title — lost by eight runs to the Wellington Blaze in the T20 final at the Basin Reserve. It handed the Wellington Blaze back-to-back Super Smash titles, and they will be hoping to make it a threepeat this season. The Otago Volts hit a purple patch in the middle of the season this year but fell off the pace slightly towards the end and missed the playoffs. The Central Stags will be out to defend their men's title after beating the Canterbury Kings by six wickets in last year's final. But the Kings will be desperate to earn their first T20 title in 20 years after being runners-up for the past five seasons. The Super Smash season — which features 64 games across 32 days — gets under way on Boxing Day between the Northern Brave and the Auckland Hearts. Royals score five in convincing win
The Dunedin City Royals put five goals past Universities of Canterbury to notch an impressive win on Saturday. Building from last week's draw with high-flyers Christchurch United, the Royals beat UC 5-0 in the men's Southern League at Logan Park on Saturday. The Royals took a seventh-minute lead when they smartly passed the ball around the UC defence allowing Will Turner to score. Midway through the first half Brady Jacobs jinked into the penalty box and struck his shot against the post. The Royals were enjoying a host of possession and keeper Alex Boomer had little to do. As halftime approached Max Davidson was denied a goal when his powerful header was spectacularly saved by Matthew Aitchison. It was 2-0 soon after the restart when Charlie Fawcett scored in the 47th minute. Turner made it 3-0 just before the hour mark. Coach Blair Scoullar was happy to have a strong bench. He introduced Cato Williams and Lewis Wall — both of whom got on the scoresheet in the 70th and 77th minutes to round out a well-deserved victory. The top of the table clash between Cashmere Tech and Christchurch United finished 2-2, meaning if Coastal Spirit can win Sunday's clash over Ferrymead Bays, Spirit will go top of the table. Selwyn remain rooted to the bottom of the table after losing 6-2 to Nomads. Wānaka did not play as their game over Nelson Suburbs was postponed, as Suburbs were in the Chatham Cup cup semifinal where they lost 3-0 to Auckland United. In the women's South Island league Roslyn Wakari was the only southern team in action. They took a lead through Morgan McCormick in the 22nd minute against Coastal Spirit at Logan Park. However, Margi Dias and Samantha Whyte both bagged doubles to give Coastal a 4-1 win. In the ODT Men's Southern Premiership, Northern continued on its quest for a 100% season with an emphatic 7-0 victory on the road against Northern Hearts. Sam Cosgrove opened the scoring after five minutes, before Rory Hibbert scored a 16-minute hat-trick to lead 4-0 after 40 minutes. While doing so, he took his personal tally to 21 goals for the season. Toby Orchiston made it 5-0 midway through the second half and Cosgrove bagged two late goals to get his first hat-trick of the season. Mosgiel retained second spot beating the Dunedin City Royals 4-0, Queens Park claimed local bragging rights in the Invercargill derby beating Old Boys 4-0, while Roslyn Wakari overcame Green Island 2-1 at Sunnyvale thanks to a double from Ben Williams-Davies. In the Women's Southern Premiership, Green Island moved clear at the top of the table beating Northern 2-0 with Hannah Post and Jonna Barth's goals. University and the Dunedin City Royals played out a 0-0 draw to leave them both three points behind Green Island — however both teams have games in hand. Queens Park came from behind to beat Roslyn with Tyler Andrews scoring her second goal in the 87th minute, before Megan Waters injury time goal secured a 3-1 win for the Invercargill team. — Neville Watson

Title within reach for Northern
Northern has put in a lot of hard work and determination to get to where they are. The side needs one point to wrap up the men's Southern Premier League title with five weeks left in the competition. If they grab that one point today against Old Boys, they will secure the title — their first since 1979 — in front of their home crowd at the Caledonian. Northern have gone through the season unbeaten so far, notching 12 wins for 36 points. Mosgiel are second on 24 points, followed by Otago University in third on 22 points. Northern's motto has been "head down, keep quiet" all season and that will be no different over the next five weeks. Coach Arran Wilkinson was really proud of his players, who had put in the hard work across the board, and was "really grateful" for all the support they received from their club. Rory Hibbert has been a standout and leads the competition's race for the golden boot with 16 goals this season. Team-mate Nick Treadwell is tied for second with Otago University's Ashton Hodson with 11. In the other Southern Premier League games today, Mosgiel host Green Island at Memorial Park and Queens Park are home to Dunedin City Royals at the ILT Football Turf. Otago University met Roslyn Wakari at Logan Park Turf last night.
