Not done yet: Titans eyeing late run at finals

The Advertiser21-06-2025
Gold Coast stars AJ Brimson and Kieran Foran insist the last-placed side can still make a late run and contend for finals with one proviso.
The Titans, who play Parramatta away on Sunday night, have also had good news on their two State of Origin representatives Moeaki Fotuaika and Tino Fa'asuamalaeaui.
Both middle forwards travelled to Sydney on Saturday to join the team and are set to play the Eels.
Fa'asuamaleaui had a sternum complaint he took into Queensland's 26-24 win over NSW in Perth, but is determined to play Parramatta so long as there is no late complication.
Brimson was man of the match in last week's 28-8 win over Manly playing at fullback. It was easily the Titans' best win of the year with 11 players unavailable - two to Origin and nine injured.
The Titans play North Queensland at home next week and then have the bye.
Brimson said it was vital the side string back-to-back wins together, starting with Parramatta, so as to have a crack at a late run to the finals.
"We are planning on (the Manly win) not being a one-off. We think this is what we have been capable of for weeks," he said.
"You enjoy every win when you are on the bottom. We are trying to put together some wins to finish off the year and see where we can go with it.
"After a short turnaround and as outsiders that was a good team performance.
"We spoke about taking the shackles off because we enjoy playing footy and that was Titans footy … backing ourselves and playing eyes-up footy.
"We are back on track with the way we want to play. We have got Parramatta and we are not getting ahead of ourselves."
Veteran Foran also had his best game of the season at No.6 and said the Titans were capable of figuring in September.
"I still believe we can," he said.
"I've always maintained we've got a great footy side here.
"The first part of the season hasn't gone to plan on the back of some disappointing performances.
"We've got to reset and go again. It's a block at a time. If we do that, you never know.
"We've got to go step by step."
In other Titans team news, boom back-rower David Fifita, named as 18th man, won't return this week after ankle surgery but is close to making a comeback.
Parramatta are also at the bottom of the ladder and will be without halves Dylan Brown (suspended) and Mitchell Moses (injured).
Their places will be taken by debutant Joash Papalii and Dean Hawkins.

Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui departs battling Titans for UK Super League club Catalans Dragons

Tino Fa'asuamaleaui no longer has family ties to Gold Coast, with his younger brother Iszac leaving the struggling Titans for UK Super League club Catalans Dragons. It comes as Brisbane signed North Queensland's back-up halfback Tom Duffy for 2026. Prop Iszac has signed a two-year deal with the France-based club, which has also recently lured unwanted Bulldog Toby Sexton and Wests Tigers centre Solomona Faataape. Captain Tino started his NRL career in Melbourne, but Iszac came through the Titans development pathways and has played 25 matches over three seasons, including 11 off the bench this season. The 23-year-old told the Catalans club website he was looking forward to improving his game under their new coach, former England international Joel Tomkins. 'It's a great opportunity for me to improve my game, gain experience, and be a part of what Joel Tomkins is building within the playing group,' Iszac said. 'I'm also looking forward to living in such a beautiful part of the world in the south of France and experiencing it all with my family.' The elder Fa'asuamaleaui, who has notched 108 NRL games, 15 State of Origin caps with Queensland and has played six matches for the Kangaroos, is set to test the open market. He has a 10-year deal at the last-placed Titans until 2033 but has get-out clauses, the first at the end of next season. The superstar lock is believed to be in the sights of NRL newcomers the Perth Bears, Canterbury and St George Illawarra. The 25-year-old has also been linked back to competition heavyweights Melbourne after tasting premiership success with the Storm in 2020. Duffy will join the Broncos next season after falling down the pecking order in his rookie season at the underachieving Cowboys. The Cowboys' decision to re-sign fellow playmaker Jake Clifford spelt bad news for Duffy last month, with the 22-year-old Townsville product inking a one-year deal at the Broncos. Duffy has played six NRL games to date and is set to join Ben Hunt in providing depth behind first-choice playmakers Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam. 'I think there's probably not a better club to go to at the moment as a half if you want to develop your game,' Duffy said.

NRL 2025: Tino Fa'asuamaleaui opens up on contract saga, what did he say, will he leave Titans, Sharks defeat Titans, news

Gold Coast star Tino Fa'asuamaleaui has responded to reports he is considering hitting the open market and potentially opting out of his mammoth 10-year Titans deal. Fa'asuamaleaui is under contract until 2033 but has a get-out clause in this contract which, if triggered, allows him to depart the club at the end of next season. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer > The Titans are desperate to keep him, but they will have plenty of opposition with veteran journalist Phil Rothfield revealing the Dragons, Bulldogs and Bears are keen to negotiate with the star forward. The incoming Perth Bears are reportedly prepared to offer Fa'asuamaleaui a five-year deal worth $7.5 million. Tino speaks about contract saga The Titans star, who returned from a three-week injury lay-off in their 54-22 loss to the Sharks on Saturday, didn't confirm or deny whether he's looking to exit the club. 'I'm at the Titans. I'm dedicated to playing well for the Titans and my coach,' he said. 'My manager is dealing with that stuff, but I'm here. 'I'm dedicated to the next three weeks and get some wins and some pride in our jersey. 'I just want to get back to playing football, I've been out for the last month so I'm not worried about the external stuff.' Fa'asuamaleaui's NRL future wasn't the only reason he was in the headlines this past week. There are reports circulating Fa'asuamaleaui will follow Payne Haas' footsteps and change his international allegiance from Australia to Samoa. Code Sports reported Haas had informed Samoan players of his switch and could represent the country during the Pacific Championships in October. Fa'asuamaleaui is said to be weighing up the same move, but he refused to give anything away when asked about it in the Titans' press conference. 'No. I've been in rehab. It's pretty hard to think about football when you're not playing football,' he said. 'I just want to get back out there and play well for the Titans and worry about that later on.'
