Starlink goes down mere hours after T-Mobile's service goes live

Phone Arena4 days ago
T-Mobile's long awaited satellite services — powered by SpaceX's Starlink network — went live yesterday, with the carrier making fun of 'rivals' scrambling to catch up. In an ironic twist of fate, however, the Starlink network suffered a very rare, major outage mere hours after the rollout of T-Mobile 's new claim to fame.Experts are assuming that this was due to a bad software update, a claim that is backed up by Starlink's own admission of key software components encountering a failure. Elon Musk also took to his platform — X, formerly Twitter — to promise that this issue would be addressed soon and will not happen again. The outage lasted for approximately 2.5 hours, during which tens of thousands of users were affected across the globe. Whatever the cause was seems to have been fixed, and most of the Starlink network is now back online. In addition to a bad software update, it's too early to rule out the possibility of a coordinated attack on the network. If that is indeed what happened, then T-Mobile likely just unluckily got caught in the crossfire. Starlink is also in use by U.S. intelligence agencies, which seem like the intended target rather than T-Mobile .

There have been beta rollouts prior, and users have generally reviewed the service quite positively.
AT&T and Verizon won't be behind in this race for too long. Both carriers are partnering with AST SpaceMobile to bring users their own versions of satellite texting services. When the top three networks have rolled out their offerings, there shouldn't be any place in the U.S. that doesn't get cell reception.
T-Mobile will be rolling out satellite-powered data plans later this year as well, a few months before its rivals announce their own competing services publicly. The Starlink outage is a very rare occurrence, and honestly not something I expected to ever happen.
But, I suppose it serves as a strong reminder that even the most robust networks aren't prone to failures. Let's just hope something similar doesn't happen when a stranded user needs this service the most. Switch to a 2-month Total 5G or 5G+ plan with Total Wireless and score this foldable deal.

If Verizon and AT&T don't speed up, the US will hand Europe the 5G SA crown

For once, Europe may be ahead of the US. We told you how US users might enjoy 6G before those on the Old Continent, but as far as SA 5G (Standalone 5G) goes, things are different. US carriers need to step up! We often talk about Standalone 5G here – and currently, it's only T-Mobile that offers it to its customers in the US. Think of SA 5G as the full version of 5G that works on its own network, built from the ground up, while regular 5G – often called non-standalone 5G (NSA) – still relies on older 4G infrastructure. With SA 5G, everything runs on the newer, faster 5G tech, which means lower lag, better reliability, and the ability to support more advanced features like smart factories or self-driving cars. Regular 5G is mainly about fast download speeds but doesn't offer the full benefits of 5G's potential. There's a recent report from research company Dell'Oro Group that's focused on the global rollout of standalone 5G (SA 5G) and how it's starting to pick up speed. According to the findings, this shift could lead to faster growth in the mobile network market, with the potential to expand even more as new technologies like generative AI and intelligent digital assistants demand constant, low-delay connections. The report estimates that 70 mobile network operators (MNOs) across 39 countries have now deployed SA 5G. In 2025 alone, five new networks went live, including Orange in France, Romania, and Slovakia; Vodafone in Spain; and O2 in the Czech Republic. Dell'Oro also broke down the current numbers by region: five networks in North America, 26 in Europe, seven in the Middle East and Africa, 13 in Northeast Asia, 13 in Southeast Asia, and six in Latin America. – Dell'Oro Group in a statement, July 2025 So far, many of these carriers are using SA 5G mainly for businesses and for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) – a type of internet service that uses 5G instead of traditional cables to deliver home internet. However, Dell'Oro expects that more mobile providers will soon start offering SA 5G directly to regular the United States, Verizon has suggested it has a nationwide SA 5G network already in place, pointing to its support for emergency response services that require strong, reliable coverage. Verizon didn't comment for Fierce Network on which companies are currently using its new 5G tools, like the ability to customize parts of the network for specific tasks (a concept known as network slicing). AT&T's progress is less clear. Dell'Oro and reporters have asked the company how far its SA 5G network reaches, but no specific details have been shared yet. Be it as it may, the good news is that more updates are expected as US carriers continue to expand and clarify their standalone 5G rollouts: the future is coming.

T-Mobile is killing yet another popular app in favor of T-Life

Has T-Mobile 's "all-in-one" T-Life app started to grow on you after the "Un-carrier" (more or less) clarified that big privacy controversy from a couple of months ago while adding (or bringing back) some highly requested features? Then you probably shouldn't be surprised that Magenta is evidently deeming this the ideal time to further expand T-Life's reach... and retire a separate app in the process. That's right, the dedicated T-Mobile Money app is preparing to go the way of the dodo... and the T-Mobile Tuesdays app, finding a "new home" in T-Life. This is very much official, mind you, and there's even a section on T-Mo's website dedicated to answering your most burning questions regarding the imminent move and thus explaininge exactly "what's new and what's different." One key detail missing is when the transition will happen, but T-Mobile Money users are promised "advance" notifications. Until then, you'll obviously be allowed to continue using your existing debit card and account "as usual", which is certainly nice of T-Mobile . Once the Money app disappears, you won't technically be forced to migrate to T-Life either (which is also nice), as the T-Mobile Money website will live on and let you access "all your banking needs" from any device. Then again, the user experience is likely to greatly differ between the two ways to access the T-Mobile Money service, and perhaps more importantly, the mobile network operator will offer you a key benefit to embrace the move to T-Life. We're talking 4 percent APY (Annual Percentage Yield) on your entire checking account balance through November 30, 2025, which is significantly better than the current 2.5 percent rate. After December 1, the 4 percent APY will be maintained for the first $3,000 in your checking account, with anything that exceeds $3,000 still qualifying for the "standard" 2.5 percent APY offered right now in the T-Mobile Money app. MinutesFromTheMall, Reddit, July 28, 2025
