Kevin De Bruyne's comments on Jack Grealish speak volumes as Napoli eye reunion
Jack Grealish appears to have no future at Manchester City after a lacklustre season and the 29-year-old could be set for a reunion with Kevin De Bruyne at Napoli
Jack Grealish looks set to leave Manchester City this summer, having been left out their squad for the Club World Cup after a disappointing campaign saw him make just two goal contributions in 20 Premier League appearances.
Napoli have emerged as Grealish's most likely escape route, but the player's wages are proving to be an issue. Grealish reportedly earns around £300,000 per week and Napoli are said to be unwilling to match that.
As a result, City could be forced to foot some of the bill in order to secure Grealish's next and there have been suggestions they may let him go out on loan. If Grealish does end up joining the Serie A champions, it would see him reunite with former City teammate Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian joined Napoli on a free transfer earlier this month after City announced that they had no plans to offer him a contract extension. De Bruyne and Grealish spent four seasons together at the Etihad and have both spoken highly of each other in the past
Speaking after a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest back in December, De Bruyne said: "Jack is so good at controlling the tempo of the game, at holding the ball. You can't really get it off him, and then sliding through plays. That's his quality. Maybe with the type of guys we have on the flanks, he's very good at that.
"I think we needed a bit more control and he was able to do that with Bernardo, Gundo and myself in the middle, and Jeremy who is a different player and very electric. I think we performed well as a team but I think Jack did exceptional."
De Bruyne also highlighted Grealish's creativity after facing him in the Nations League before he joined City. "I rate him [Grealish] very highly," he said at the time. "He's somebody I mentioned before, talking to the team-mates at City, in a random conversation. In England, they talked about creative problems in midfield, but he brings that to a team."
And after it was announced that De Bruyne would be leaving City, Grealish said the playmaker was the "best" player he has ever played with and revealed that the chance to be his teammate was one of the reasons why he made the move to the Etihad in the first place.
"One of the reasons I joined Man City was to play alongside you brother! The BEST I've ever had the pleasure to play with, for sure. Legend!" he wrote in a post on Instagram.
Grealish joined City from Aston Villa for £100m back in 2021 and has made 40 goal contributions in 157 appearances across all competitions, helping them win three Premier League titles, a Champions League and an FA Cup.

'Future of football' or an expensive mistake?
If you are working on the Club World Cup - this reborn competition - as a journalist or influencer, you have to sound hyper excited, but I feel browbeaten into showing some love for Infantino's 'beautiful' baby, otherwise I am portrayed as an unfeeling Grinch.I will give it a chance before I decide, while doing my very best to ignore all the tiresome fake razzamatazz surrounding the games. It is clearly a bunch of steps too far for exhausted players but if the tournament takes off and delivers some great football that feels meaningful, I'll be here to give it every a 0-0 opener wasn't exactly what Fifa and its cheerleaders wanted, neither was the 10-0 embarrassment between Bayern and Auckland, but is a 63 game tournament over 29 wait and most concerning thing for Fifa must be the feeble ticket sales particularly at the inflated prices initially advertised for some early games. Empty stadiums are not a good look, even if you move the fans and instruct the TV cameras to veer away from the empty spaces. With streaming free in the UK and other regions, there have been staggering sums spent on this tournament. If it doesn't work and the sums do not add up, this loss leader for Fifa could yet become one of the biggest financial white elephants in sporting it does work, then this is the future of football and could in time grow to be bigger than the Champions League or the World Cup. This is certainly Fifa's vision and it is why the staggering sums have been spent here in the first up to read more from Pat Nevin in his Football Extra newsletter

Arsenal told to forget Sesko and Gyokeres and strike £50m Liverpool deal
Arsenal are being urged to sign a player who Liverpool may be willing to sell for £50million, and has been backed to score them plenty of goals despite a disappointing season Arsenal have been urged to sign Darwin Nunez following reports Liverpool could be willing to sell the striker for £50million. The 25-year-old is expected to leave Anfield in the next few months after a disappointing return in front of goal for the newly-crowned Premier League champions this season. The Uruguay international is known to have suitors in the Middle East, with Al-Nassr having a £60m bid for the frontman rejected back in January. The former Benfica man has also attracted interest from teams in Italy, with AC Milan and Napoli both said to be keen on a deal. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is now being encouraged to consider a move for Nunez after finishing just behind the Reds in second this term. Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has made the suggestion after boldly claiming he could bag the Gunners 25 goals next season. Such a tally would require a marked improvement from Nunez, who only scored seven times across all competitions in his most recent campaign. However, the former Wolves and Wrexham manager said he believed Arsenal would be lucky to have him after describing their current transfer targets as "gambles". RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres are Arsenal's reported prime targets, though the former is understood to be the club's favoured direction. 22-year-old striker Sesko scored 21 times last season while Gyokeres netted an incredible 54 goals from 52 matches. Speaking on talkSPORT, Saunders said: "Is there any fan out there that would be disappointed if their club was linked with Nunez? He's not got enough goals for Liverpool, but I think we all look at him with the same eyes. "I wouldn't be surprised if he went to Arsenal and scored 25 goals. The people they've got lined up, they're all gambles. At least he's played in the Premier League for three or four years, and you know what you're going to get. "He works his socks off, even if he doesn't score, so he's not a passenger. That's why the Liverpool fans like him." He added: "He's not hopeless and what surprises you about him is that he's got every finish in his locker. He can go around the keeper, he can shoot from range and he can score headers, but he does seem to find a way of missing sometimes." Liverpool are looking to sign a new striker this summer, with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike on the cards. With a club-record £116m deal for Florian Wirtz also in the works, it could lead to several outgoings to fund the new arrivals. Nunez is looking for a new challenge after starting just eight Premier League games under Arne Slot this season. He earned praise from his manager for his positive attitude in spite of the lack of minutes. Discussing Nunez's situation at the moment, Slot said: "I don't know exactly what is going to happen. One of the main strengths we had this season is that everybody accepted his role. "And his role sometimes could be to start every single game, hardly be taken off, sometimes be taken off. It could be sometimes not starting every single game, sometimes not playing hardly [any] minutes." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
