Al Zeyoudi: UAE, India continue to reap benefits of CEPA
ABU DHABI (WAM) Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, said that the UAE and India share a strong mutual commitment to elevating their strategic partnership across all sectors. This cooperation, he noted, is aligned with the ambitious development goals of both nations and contributes to sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity for their peoples.Speaking to WAM, Al Zeyoudi emphasised that the reciprocal visits by the leaders of both countries reflect this joint vision and help strengthen strategic collaboration.These high-level engagements continue to create opportunities for building deeper partnerships, especially in trade and investment between the business communities and private sectors of both nations.He noted that the official visit of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence, to India comes as the two friendly countries approach the third anniversary of the implementation of their Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which came into effect on 1st May 2022. This agreement was the first of its kind signed by the UAE under its CEPA programme and the first to be implemented—highlighting the long-standing and robust ties between the UAE and India.Al Zeyoudi pointed out that the UAE and India continue to reap tangible benefits from the CEPA, which over the past three years has led to significant growth in bilateral trade and investment flows. Non-oil trade between the two countries grew by 20.5%, reaching over Dh240 billion in 2024, compared to Dh199.3 billion in 2023.
This growth underscores the vast opportunities in trade and investment between the two nations.
India also ranked as the top destination for UAE's non-oil exports in 2024, accounting for 13.5% of total non-oil exports—a remarkable year-on-year increase of 75.2% compared to 2023.He further explained that both nations play a vital role in each other's economies. India is the UAE's second-largest global trading partner after China, while the UAE is India's third-largest trading partner, following China and the US.India is also the second-largest investor in the UAE, holding a 6.3% share with investments totaling nearly $10 billion by the end of 2022. Conversely, the UAE has cumulative direct investments in India of around $23 billion by the end of 2024—making it India's seventh-largest global investor and the top Arab investor.
The value of UAE investments flowing into India between April 2022 and December 2024 reached $10.4 billion, coinciding with the implementation of the CEPA.

The Chairpersons also note with alarm that the Department of International Relations and Cooperation has publicly distanced itself from the General's comments and that the Presidency called the visit 'ill advised'. The committees will have a joint meeting to engage with the ministers of the Department of Defence and Military Veterans, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation on the issue. Mr Legoete said it is evident that there is a worrying lack of coordination between defence diplomacy and South Africa's official foreign policy. This disjuncture exposes potential misalignment and cohesion in the country's approach to international relations. He said the Department of Defence should draw long-term lessons from these events and ensure thorough alignment going forward. He further stressed that the committee awaits the outcome of engagements between the President, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the SANDF, the Minister of Defence, and SANDF leadership. 'These engagements must demonstrate unity, strength and synergy in how South Africa conducts itself on the international stage,' Mr Legoete emphasised. Mr Legoete reiterated the committee's position that the SANDF must remain a professional and apolitical institution, focusing squarely on its constitutional mandate to safeguard the Republic, while steering away from statements in the political domain. The United Arab Emirates and the Republic of the Philippines commemorate 51 years of diplomatic relations today, August 19, marking over five decades of partnership and mutual progress since formal ties were established in 1974. In a statement, His Excellency Mohamed Alqattam Alzaabi, UAE Ambassador to the Philippines, reflected on this milestone and reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to deepen cooperation, drive innovation, and ensure shared prosperity for generations to come. 'The UAE is home to more than one million Filipinos, whose contributions enrich every sector of society. The UAE remains committed to safeguarding their welfare and strengthening the bonds between the two nations,' H.E. Alzaabi said. As part of the occasion, he recalled the November 2024 visit of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the UAE, where he met His Highness UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, adding that the two countries have expanded in areas such as trade, cultural exchange, development, and people-to-people connections.
