RHB Islamic Hands Over Business Zakat Of Rm1 Mln To MAIPs
KANGAR, June 13 (Bernama) -- RHB Islamic Bank Berhad (RHB Islamic) handed over business zakat of RM1 million to the Perlis Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) today.
Its managing director, Datuk Adissadikin Ali said the total, the highest the bank has ever handed over, rose by RM350,000 compared to last year's RM650,000, and reflected the bank's commitment to strengthen cooperation with the council to empower the asnaf and B40 community.
'The zakat handover marks our continued support towards programmes that have high impact on domestic happiness,' he said during a speech at the handover here today, which was graced by Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, in his capacity of MAIPs president, and with council chief executive officer Mohd Nazim Mohd Noor in attendance.
He added that from 2021 till this year, RM532,449 in zakat wakalah has been channelled by the bank to six MAIPs-linked economic empowerment and community programmes, including Harvest Bakery, a sewing and mobile phone repair workshop, which have benefitted almost 200 individuals.
'The projects not only provide skill and practical training but prepares complete facilities to ensure the generation of sustainable income,' he said.
He also announced additional contributions of RM313,000 under the 2025 Perlis Asnaf Economic Development Project to finance catfish farming projects at two locations, Jalan Kaki Bukit Paya, Kangar and Taman Desa Asnaf Chuping near Padang Besar.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The government has allocated RM53,100 this year for two welfare initiatives for part-time media practitioners -- the extension of the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) under the Social Security Organisation (Socso) and contributions to the i-Saraan scheme under the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said that of the total amount, RM37,170 was allocated for the extension of SKSPS coverage, which benefited 531 part-time media practitioners for a period of one year last year, while the remaining RM15,930 was for i-Saraan EPF contributions. He said the initiative was implemented through the synergy between the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Socso.

Media Industry Urges Govt Support Amid Digital Challenges
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has been urged to consider proactive measures to help the country's media industry, which is currently in a critical stage in facing major challenges. Utusan Borneo Sabah editor-in-chief Datuk Lichong Angkui said competition from social media and global digital platforms, declining advertising revenue and changing reading patterns of the people have caused media companies' income to shrink, while operating costs continue to rise. 'Proactive measures such as financial incentives, digital transformation grants and strategic collaborations could enable local media to remain relevant and competitive,' he said in his speech as a media representative at the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration here today. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics, the prestigious event will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Also present were Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, cum director of HAWANA 2025 Project, as well as top management of national media companies. Meanwhile, Lichong expressed his appreciation to the government and the Prime Minister for realising the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) after struggling for the council for decades. ''It is our hope that MMC will not only become a government monitoring body but more importantly a strong-rooted, independent and inclusive protector in preserving the integrity and freedom of the media in this country,' he said. He also thanked the government, especially the Ministry of Communications, for the initiative to establish the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA, which has so far helped hundreds of media practitioners, including those who have retired and those who are still working but are facing difficulties in life. 'This initiative proves the government's concern by taking into account the fact that, behind the sharpness of the journalist's pen, there is actually still room for compassion and empathy,' he said. Regarding the theme of HAWANA 2025, Lichong said it reflects the current reality of the world of journalism which is increasingly changing due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology which also raises questions of ethics, authenticity of information and social responsibility of journalists in assessing, filtering and presenting news. The HAWANA 2025 celebration is organised by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency, with the aim of recognising the role and contribution of media practitioners in national development. May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players.

Ringgit expected to trade sideways ahead of key Fed meeting
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit is expected to trade within a narrow range next week, as investors remain cautious amid ongoing global inflation concerns, said an analyst. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid noted that the local currency is likely to fluctuate between 4.22 and 4.24 against the US dollar. He added that market attention will be on the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on June 17-18. "The focus would be on the quarterly forecast by the Federal Reserve's (Fed) staff, particularly the outlook for the Fed Funds Rate for the remainder of the year,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam said besides the Fed, several central banks are set to meet next week, including the Bank of England, Bank of Japan, the People's Bank of China. Central banks in the ASEAN region, such as the Bank of Indonesia and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will also hold meetings during this period. Generally, he opined that global interest rates are trending downward as global growth prospects have become more challenging due to tariff shocks. Meanwhile, he said Israel's strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities resulted in a sharp rise in Brent crude prices to a high of US$78.22 per barrel before prices retreated towards US$73.56 per barrel. The US Dollar Index gained 0.31 per cent to 98.228 points. "Hence, geopolitics has taken centre stage on Friday, and it has benefitted the US dollar at the moment,' he said. Reports suggested that a direct military conflict between Israel and Iran could lead to a significant appreciation of the US dollar. The Fed's response to these dynamics, particularly regarding interest rates, will be crucial in shaping the US dollar's trajectory in the near term. For the week just ended, the ringgit gave up its earlier gains as escalating geopolitical concerns spurred demand for the safe-haven US dollar. The ringgit ended the week easier against the greenback, closing at 4.2435/2480 on Friday from 4.2270/2360 a week earlier. The local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit fell vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9448/9482 from 2.9324/9390 at Friday's close, slipped against the British pound to 5.7482/7543 from 5.7212/7334 previously, and depreciated versus the euro to 4.8906/8958 from 4.8268/8371 at the end of last week. The ringgit traded mostly lower against ASEAN currencies. The local note declined against the Singapore dollar to 3.3077/3118 on Friday from 3.2862/2934 in the previous week, weakened versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.6 from 259.5/260.2 previously, and slid versus the Thai baht to 13.0807/1018 from 12.9599/9947 last week.
