Canelo vs Crawford date and location revealed with Alvarez set for ‘fight of the century'

Independent04-05-2025

Moments after Canelo Alvarez fended off William Scull to become the undisputed super middleweight champion again, he was facing off against Terence Crawford in the same ring in Riyadh to promote a showdown in September.
Alvarez became an undisputed champion in the division for the second time when the judges scored his ho-hum bout against Scull 115-113, 116-112, 119-109. The 34-year-old Mexican boxer improved to 63-2-2, with 39 knockouts, and is unbeaten in 10 fights in the super middleweight category.
The decision had barely been announced before Turki Alalshikh, head of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia, stepped into the ring and ordered it cleared out so that he could bring four-division champion Crawford out of the crowd to face Alvarez, who was wearing one belt around his waist, another over his shoulder and holding one in each arm.
"Now we want to do the face off for the fight of the century, between the two great fighters in our generation." Alalshikh told the crowd, with the bout set for 12 September at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Alvarez is a four-weight world champion and entered the fight against Scull with the WBA, WBC and WBO titles at 168 pounds. The 37-year-old Crawford (41-0) has won titles in four divisions from lightweight to light middleweight.
Alvarez was stripped of the IBF belt last July when he declined to make a mandatory defence against Scull. He'd owned that title since November 2021 when he defeated Caleb Plant.
The fight against Scull didn't live up to the hype. The Cuba-born Scull entered unbeaten in 23 professional fights. He constantly moved around, dodging, shuffling and frustrating Alvarez, who later said he hated fighting that style of boxer.
Alvarez was fighting outside the United States or Mexico for the first time and had to make plenty of adjustments, including to the time zone. The fighters walked into the ring and the anthems started around 6,20am local time for the main bout in Riyadh, timed so it was in prime time on the US West Coast.
The opening rounds were slow with both boxers feeling for range and the intensity gradually lifted with Scull throwing many more punches but not landing enough. Alvarez, by contrast, stayed patient and was landing body shots. In the end, Alvarez threw almost half as many punches as Scull (152-293) but landed one more (56-55), predominantly power shots to the body.
"It's OK, we won. We're here with the title as the champion," Alvarez said, adding that neither the timing of the bout nor the quality of the contest was a problem because he'd plenty of time to prepare. "I'm a champion. I'm a professional, so that's all, no excuse or anything."
As for the September showdown against Crawford, who will be stepping up a weight to take on Alvarez?
"I feel great. Crawford is one of the best out there and, you know, I like to share the ring with that kind of fighter," he said. "It's my pleasure."
Crawford was in the crowd watching in the Saudi capital.
"I'm feeling great. I'm feeling blessed. Things happen for a reason, and there's a reason why I'm here," he said. "In September I'm showing the world what greatness look like."

Man Utd pick Fernandes replacement after bid and hint amid Amorim's statement

Bruno Fernandes is mulling over a mammoth offer from Saudi Arabia whilst Manchester United could also benefit financially but Ruben Amorim has made his view very clear Bruno Fernandes' days as a Manchester United player could be numbered with Al-Hilal offering huge sums to lure the player to Saudi Arabia. The skipper has excelled since the appointment of Ruben Amorim, but a move is not out of the question. Around £100million could come United's way if they choose to cash in, whilst the player himself could land weekly sums of £700,000. The Saudi outfit want to add a star name to their squad before the Club World Cup this month - and will spend big to do so. ‌ Their interest in Fernandes has been ongoing and it leaves the player and his club with a decision to make. Amid the need for a rebuild, Unitedr could massively benefit from the cash injection. ‌ Fernandes will also turn 31 later this year and there continues to be question marks over whether he truly fits into Amorim 's system once he gets the players he wants. His output this season has been sensational, albeit largely in a losing effort. United have endured a dire campaign and they missed out on Europe when they were beaten in the Europa League final. That has placed even more strain on the club's financial situation. However Amorim has told United chiefs to find other ways of making money rather than selling their star man, despite the player himself seriously considering the offer he has in front of him. ‌ Amorim claims, through conversations with Fernandes, that the Portugal star wants to stay put. He said: "Of course I am the manager, the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player, but of course I talk with him, I explain things and I just have that feeling. When you talk to someone, you have that feeling if he wants to stay. "Of course in a lot of games this season he was so frustrated, but he knows what we are doing. The feeling that I have every time I speak to him is he wants to continue for sure at Man Utd. But you never know." ‌ Fernandes has been spotted dining with Portugal pal Joao Cancelo - who has been dubbed a "secret agent" by fans as the former Manchester City full-back looks to convince the United star to join him at Al-Hilal, where fellow Portugal international Ruben Neves is also in the squad. Would Fernandes really go? Well his agent Miguel Pinho has been in Riyadh for talks with senior Al Hilal individuals and those in Saudi see it as a positive sign that discussions have been held. Paul Scholes is among those who admits the sort of sums being offered cannot be turned down. He admitted: "When you're getting £100m for him you snap their hand off and take it.' ‌ Fernandes has admitted he would leave Old Trafford if United decided it was in their best interests to cash in. 'If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is,' he said. 'And football sometimes is like this. I have always been honest. I've always said I will be here until the club says to me that it's time to go." His social media activity has also served to fuel the rumour mill. He recently posted a Portuguese quote on his social media account which translates to: 'If you tried and failed, congratulations! There are people who don't even try.' ‌ Can Man Utd find a replacement? Well they are are lining up Sporting Lisbon's attacking midfielder Pedro Goncalves as the man to fill the void that could be left by Fernandes. The Red Devils would have the finances to meet Sporting's £70m valuation of Goncalves if they do cash in. Goncalves plays in a more advanced role than Fernandes after Amorim transformed him into a potent attacking midfielder throughout their time together in Portugal. He can also play out wide, which gives the team more versatility. The £100m they would receive would also help them improve other areas of the pitch. Meanwhile the £62.5m capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves goes someway to replacing the goals and assists provided by Fernandes - and there's an argument that the Brazilian better suits the 3-4-3 system in Manchester.

Fernandes dines with 'Al-Hilal's secret agent' amid Man Utd transfer exit talks

Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes is the subject of huge interest from Al-Hilal and has been out dining with one of their current stars, Joao Cancelo, as he weighs up an offer Bruno Fernandes continues to be linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal and has been spotted dining with Portugal pal Joao Cancelo - who has been dubbed a "secret agent" by fans as he looks to convince the Manchester United star to join him in the Middle East. Al Hilal are willing to make Fernandes one of the best-paid players in the world and will fork out £100m to sign the playmaker. Fernandes' agent Miguel Pinho has been in Riyadh for talks with senior Al Hilal individuals and those in Saudi see it as a positive sign that discussions have been held. ‌ United want to retain Fernandes, but Al Hilal believe every player has a price. The Portuguese star will turn 31 in September, but does have a contract until 2027. ‌ It has been reported that the Saudi offer will only last for so long and Al-Hilal want an answer within days. Their lucrative bid will be rescinded if they do not hear back soon, putting Fernandes and United on a timer. The United skipper has met with Al-Hilal's full-back Cancelo, formerly of Manchester City, and national team-mate with Fernandes. A snap of them at a group meal in a restaurant has seen speculation soar that a deal could be sorted within days with Cancelo playing his part. The ex-City man was 31 last Tuesday and a birthday cake with candles was presented to him at the restaurant as he celebrated at the weekend. Fernandes was by his side having made the trip back from United's post-season tour of Asia. ‌ It would be a huge loss for Ruben Amorim, who has seen his side saved by Fernandes on numerous occasions. But he believes the ex-Sporting Lisbon man wants to remain in England. But you never know." ‌ Al Hilal have also held talks about signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who will become a free agent next month if he doesn't sign a new contract at Al Nassr. He recently claimed his "chapter was over" on social media. The Saudi club expect to have at least one big-name signing and a new head coach - possibly Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi - when they play in the Club World Cup this month.

The takeover saga ended last Friday when Andrew Cavenagh and his San Francisco 49ers backers were handed the keys to Ibrox in a £90million deal. "That's what this project is about. It's not about winning one or two titles. "It's about the next ten or 20 years and that's why I'm excited. 'They are the right people. We know they have got the resources to do this. 'They are not going to come and just spend the money. "They are smart, clever business people. 'They have done a great job with Leeds, if you look at the numbers. "Things like the commercial revenue, I believe they have quadrupled it over four or five years. 'They understand football. They understand all of the other things — the gaming side, the media side — that are important if you're to be a modern football club. 'And if we're going to continue to have to operate in the markets that we want to operate in and be successful in Europe we need that. Rangers fans react as 49ers takeover completed 'That's why I'm excited.' King was delighted to finally get the deal over the line. The Castlemilk-born tycoon has sold his shares to the Cavenagh consortium, ending his 25-year association with his boyhood heroes. While King is predicting wholesale change, he's warned Gers fans it won't happen overnight. He added: 'It's going to be a steady, ongoing improvement. "But what we shouldn't be expecting is for it to turn around in one transfer window. 'I'm just hoping that the supporters understand that. 'We'll all expect to see a far better quality of player coming in than is going out. 'Part of my frustration is we've brought guys in, and all of a sudden he's not fit yet or he needs more time. 'The league was a third gone and we were still waiting for players to put their shirt on for the first time. "You can't be doing that. We need to bring in people who are ready to go. 'They know that and that's why I still remain confident because these Euro qualifiers will be on us before we know it.'
