Trump's Auto Tariffs Strike at the Heart of Japan's Economy

Bloomberga day ago

US President Donald Trump's tariffs threaten to batter Japan's vital auto industry and derail the country's long-standing efforts to engineer a sustainable economic recovery.
With the 25% US tariff now in place on cars and auto parts, Japan's major automakers — including Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Mazda Motor Corp. and Subaru Corp. — are bracing for a collective hit of more than $19 billion this fiscal year alone. And it's not just the household names feeling the pain.

Toyota Drops Killer 2025 Camry Lease Offer for June

If there was ever a sedan that stood the test of time, it would be the Toyota Camry. Right alongside the Honda Accord, the Camry has hauled families and cargo since the Celica Camry back in 1980. The so-called XV20 generation of the Camry that lasted from 1997 to 2001 was such a popular model and proved to be so reliable that you can't be in modern traffic without still seeing one puttering around. Now, 45 years after the badge's introduction, Toyota has released some special lease offers for the 2025 model year Camry, giving you yet another good reason to get behind the wheel of one. The lease offers for the 2025 model year Camry apply to every trim with various terms, depending on where you live. Los Angeles residents can get an LE 2WD for $309/month for 36 months, an SE 2WD for $339/month for 36 months, an XLE 2WD for $429/month for 36 months, and an XSE 2WD for $459/month for 36 months. All of these deals include $2,999 due at signing and a 10,000 miles/year limit. Denver residents can only get the LE, in either 2WD trim, for $299/month for 36 months or in 4WD trim for $329/month for 36 months. Both deals carry $2,999 due at signing and a higher 12,000 miles/year limit. Miami residents can also only get the LE, but solely in 2WD trim for $279/month for 36 months with $3,578 due at signing and a 12,000 miles/year limit. Up the coast, New Yorkers can only get the LE in 4WD trim for $299/month for 36 months with $3,999 due at signing and the lower 10,000 miles/year limit. Potential lessees who want to save money on the upfront costs can pay $0 at signing, with some adjustments to the monthly payment. We have estimated the monthly payments by spreading the amount at signing over the lease's term. In Los Angeles, all of the trims would carry the same ~$83 monthly payment increase since they all have the same amount due at signing. That increase would increase the monthly payments as follows: ~$392 for the LE 2WD, ~$422 for the SE 2WD, ~$512 for the XLE 2WD, and ~$542 for the XSE 2WD. In Denver, a $0 down lease would carry the same ~$83 increase, bringing the total monthly payments to around $382 for the LE 2WD and $412 for the LE 4WD. Miami residents would get an increase of ~$99, bringing their sole LE 2WD offering to around $378 per month. Lastly, in New York, their LE 4WD payments would increase by about $111, to about $410 per month. *This $0 down figure is an estimation. Official $0 down lease offers from Toyota may differ based on their specific calculations, credit approval, and potential money factor adjustments. Always obtain a quote directly from Toyota. The current ninth-generation Camry hit the market in 2023 as a solely electrified sedan. Using the same GA-K platform as its previous generation, the 2025 Camry is powered by a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with standard AWD and two motors that add a total of 174 hp combined. That brings the output to a net 225 hp in FWD configuration and 232 hp in AWD with 163 lb-ft. of torque. As has been the case for a while, trims include LE, SE, XLE, and XSE. Differences between trims are both aesthetic and functional, with some luxury add-ons like bigger infotainment screens, heated front seats, a Smart Key System, and leather finishes reserved for the higher trims. Another notable addition for the 2025 model year is the introduction of optional two-tone color schemes on certain trims, with my two favorites being the Ocean Gem with Midnight Black Metallic roof and the Supersonic Red with Midnight Black Metallic roof. All Camrys feature 15.1 cu. ft. of cargo space with the seats up, but Toyota doesn't offer official cargo space figures with the seats folded down. The base LE model starts at $28,700 with an EPA-estimated 53 city/50 hwy/51 combined mpg, while the highest XSE model starts at $34,900 with an EPA-estimated 53 city/50 hwy/51 combined mpg. Lease offers can vary based on location and specific vehicle configuration (trim level, options, etc.) and are subject to credit approval. Advertised payments typically exclude taxes, title, registration, and other potential fees. MBK Seeks Buyer for Struggling Korean Supermarket Chain Homeplus

South Korea's troubled retail chain Homeplus Co. opened itself up to a takeover as its private equity owners seek to avoid the firm's liquidation. MBK Partners is seeking to find a buyer for Homeplus after a recent review showed the company's liquidation value exceeds its going-concern value, according to an MBK Partners statement Friday. If a 'pre-approval M&A' plan succeeds and an owner is found before finalizing Homeplus's rehabilitation plan announced in March, MBK Partners will cancel 2.5 trillion won ($1.8 billion) worth of Homeplus common shares it holds without compensation, the statement said.

Notice Regarding Conviction of Three Chinese Companies That Produced and Sold Counterfeit Yamaha PA Analog Mixers

HAMAMATSU, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Yamaha Corporation (hereinafter 'Yamaha') (TOKYO:7951) announces that on March 20, 2025, the Zhongshan Intermediate People's Court of Guangdong Province upheld the first-instance guilty verdicts in a criminal case against the individuals responsible for three Chinese companies involved in manufacturing and selling counterfeit Yamaha PA analog mixers. Yamaha reported the three companies that were manufacturing and selling counterfeit versions of our PA analog mixers (model numbers: MG16XU and many others) in China to Chinese law enforcement authorities in July 2023, based on the design rights held by our company. The authorities conducted an investigation into the three companies in August 2023 and seized a large number of counterfeit products that served as evidence for the criminal charges. In May 2024, the three companies were indicted by Chinese law enforcement authorities and fully admitted to the facts regarding the manufacture and sale of counterfeit products. In the first-instance judgment, the court ordered the cessation of the manufacture and sale of counterfeit products, and five defendants from the three companies were sentenced to imprisonment (three of which were suspended), along with fines proportional to the sales amount of the counterfeit products. Two of the defendants appealed the first-instance judgment, but the second-instance judgment upheld the first-instance judgment, and the penalties were finalized. Yamaha Corporation has long taken various measures against counterfeit products such as civil action, crime detection, customs injunctions, and placed informative advertising in China and worldwide. In China, Yamaha has filed lawsuits against more than 10 companies that produce and sell counterfeit PA products for infringement of its trademark or design rights, including this lawsuit. In every court case, Yamaha's claims were accepted, and the production and sale of low-quality counterfeit products were halted. Yamaha is adamantly resolved to confront any action that could damage the Yamaha brand or infringe on Yamaha intellectual property rights in order to protect its valued customers and stakeholders from low-quality counterfeit products and to preserve the reliability and trust in the Yamaha brands.
