‘Siouxperspiel' attracts curlers from near and far
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The curling community has been buzzing as the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Curling in Sioux Falls draws closer. To help keep that excitement in the air, Sioux Falls Curling hosted a tournament this weekend. 32 teams made their way onto the ice this weekend for this year's 'Siouxperspiel.' 16 were from Sioux Falls, but the other half came from as far as Watertown, Aberdeen and central Minnesota. Eric Newhouse traveled from Omaha to participate for the second straight year. A summer staple frozen in time 'We had such a great time doing that, we thought we'd come back up and play. It's a fun club. There are great teams. The ice is terrific,' Newhouse said. Newhouse says the competition has been fierce. 'I think in general, the teams we faced are really, really good, especially the first one. Then you've got a couple of Olympic contenders sprinkled in there as well,' Newhouse said. The event, which curlers call a bonspiel, has also been good for the community. 'It brings people from outside of our community into Sioux Falls. We've had people going downtown to eat at our restaurants, going to The Falls, getting around Sioux Falls,' Sioux Falls Curling Vice President Jennifer Farke said. And the curlers who participated this weekend hope the sport continues to grow. 'Traditionally, most of your best curlers are going to be from Minnesota and Wisconsin. You don't see a lot of it in other parts of the country, but now, we've got a huge club down in Omaha. You've got a huge and growing club up here,' Newhouse said. 'I am super excited for this sport to grow and grow and grow because you can start at 11 years of age, and you can curl. There's a lady here curling; she's 86 years old, and I want to be her, and she plays pickleball, too. It's a sport anyone can play.' curler Kendra Gatz said. Team Workin from Fargo, North Dakota took home the championship. The Olympic Trials will take place at the Denny Sanford Premier Center from November 11-16. Zimmermann, Hart homer as Canaries beat Cougars
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (CANARIES) — Peter Zimmermann and Mike Hart each homered and Tanner Brown struck out eight as the Canaries topped Kane County 5-2 on Saturday. The Cougars opened the scoring with a two-out RBI double in the first inning but Zimmermann drilled a two-run shot in the second and Sioux Falls wouldn't trail after that. Kane County tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the fifth before the Birds took the lead for good in the bottom half. Jabari Henry tripled with two outs and scored on a base hit from Josh Rehwaldt. Hart smacked a solo homerun with one out in the seventh inning and Calvin Estrada followed with a sacrifice fly. Brown scattered six hits over six innings to earn his second win while Kody Dalen, Will Levine and Christian Cosby each tossed a scoreless inning of relief. The Canaries are now 13-14 and will look to sweep the series Sunday afternoon at 4:05pm. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Jefferson wins class ‘AA' state softball title
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Jefferson high school softball team won the class 'AA' state championship Saturday, earning a 4-0 shutout win over Washington. Whitney Portner got the scoring started in the first inning, thanks to a two run double. Brooklyn Herrera added a run in the second inning, thanks to a solo homerun. Tya Devericks singled in a run in the fifth and that was plenty of run support for the Cavs. Portner and Devericks combined to throw a complete shutout. They allowed six hits, while striking out seven. 'It feels really good. Last game for me, so it was really fun to go out with these girls and end on a win,' Whitney Portner said. 'Coming into the season, you have one goal with your team and that's to make it to the state tournament. Coming this far and working together with your teammates is very, very, very special,' Tya Devericks said. The win marks Jefferson's first softball state title. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
