Plan to convert Boots in Calcot into food store given the go ahead

Yahooa day ago
A plan to convert the Boots chemist and pharmacy in Calcot into a food store has been given the go-ahead.
The Boots at Unit 1 of the Savacentre provides a range of services, including the pharmacy and premium cosmetics and fragrance counters.
The plan emerged last year in an application to West Berkshire Council, involving the repurposing of the Boots into a food store.
The project was considered by a council planning officer earlier this year.
The primary concern in the officer's report was over the potential for increased traffic along the A4 Bath Road and Pincents Lane.
Ultimately, the council has requested a financial contribution to pay for adjustments to traffic light sequencing to improve traffic flow at peak times.
The plan was approved earlier this year despite an objection from Boots that it will be retaining the unit for the next four years.
The objection states: "On behalf of Boots I object to this application. We are the tenant of the subject property.
"We have just taken a new lease to September 2029, and this change is not required for our continued occupation and trade."
Boots has been contacted for a statement clarifying the situation.
You can view the application by typing reference 24/00863/FUL into West Berkshire's planning portal.
The permission has a three-year time limit. If no change to the Boots unit is made in that time, the application would be determined as expired, meaning a fresh application would have to be submitted.
The application was submitted by Threadneedle Property, the company that owns the Savacentre.

Starmer and Merz Ink Treaty Locking in Cooperation on Defense

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz signed a new treaty that includes a commitment for the two nations to assist each other in case of armed attack, part of a wider reset of post-Brexit ties. Conservative leader Merz has made clear his regret over Britain quitting the European Union and is keen to deepen German-UK cooperation. Starmer said the pact would 'bring the UK and Germany closer than ever' as they confront challenges like Donald Trump's trade onslaught and Russia's war on Ukraine.

Olivia Smith – first £1m women's player; Liverpool's Ekitike talks; transfer ‘saga' stages

The Athletic FC ⚽ is The Athletic's daily football (or soccer, if you prefer) newsletter. Sign up to receive it directly to your inbox. Hello! The women's world transfer record has gone again. Olivia Smith and Arsenal are making history. On the way: 🥇 First £1m women's player ❓ Liverpool's Ekitike enquiry 🖋️ Norway star's penalty complex 🗣️ The language of a transfer saga At the risk of stating the obvious, women's soccer is booming. Crowds are increasing, TV audiences are tracking in the same direction, investors are queuing around the block, and only an idiot would try to short the stock. Yesterday brought another indicator of growth, with Megan Feringa breaking the exclusive of Olivia Smith's £1.1million ($1.5m) transfer from Liverpool to Arsenal. It is the first fee in the history of the women's game to hit or clear the £1m mark, six months after Chelsea shattered the $1m barrier when signing Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave. Confirmation from Arsenal dropped this morning. Advertisement Before we reflect further, let's give the stage over to Megan for her take on a watershed moment that, for a couple of years now, has been coming down the track at breakneck speed: 'It's tectonic plate-moving stuff. Smith's transfer represents the fourth time the women's record has been broken in the past 23 months. The domino effect is a sign of women's football's increasing marketability, its financial heft at the top and the threshold of what good investment now looks like.' The uptick in fees has indeed been dramatic. Go back to the summer of 2022 and the world record still stood at £250,000, the sum paid by Chelsea for Denmark's Pernille Harder. But as the popularity of women's football soared, so have player valuations. There's no doubt that Smith, who turns 21 next month, is worth the money. Last November, Megan spent time with Smith and her father, Sean, for a joint interview published by The Athletic. You can read it here. Like me, you'll come away with the impression of a forward who was too driven and talented not to make it; the definition of an exceptionally quick climber. Smith was part of Canada's under-17 squad before her 13th birthday. She won her first full cap at the age of 15 years and 94 days, the country's youngest international. There are some sweet, but instructive, images in Megan's interview of notes written by Smith while she was at primary school, listing areas where she could improve as a footballer and 'become a legend'. Professionally, she's kicked on too, bouncing from Sporting CP to Liverpool, who broke their club record to sign her last year. There are, quite evidently, more valuable female players out there, but Smith's move to Arsenal is an accurate reflection of her stock. Celebrating rising transfer fees is a risky business because, as the men's market has shown, they can easily get out of hand. Once the genie escapes the bottle, there's no putting it back in, but as a mark of where women's football is headed, a £1m deal resonates in a wholly positive way. And you don't need me to tell you that the countdown is already on to this world record getting smashed out of the park. 📬 Love TAFC? Check out The Athletic's other newsletters, including Full Time, for women's soccer. At the top of the women's tree — where Olivia Smith aspires to get to — is Ada Hegerberg. The Norway captain is closing on 100 senior caps. Her goalscoring record for OL Lyonnes is dizzying: better than one a game. But somewhere along the line, Hegerberg forgot how to take penalties. Having shanked one past the left-hand post against Switzerland during Euro 2025's group stages, she hooked a second past the right-hand post in yesterday's quarter-final between Norway and Italy, a mirror-image miss. That casual, strolling run-up (above) isn't working for her. Advertisement True, she equalised against Italy six minutes later but Hegerberg's fluffed line was symptomatic of Norway's fluffed night. They lost in the 90th minute to a header (below) from another international stalwart, Cristiana Girelli. Italy's No 10 promised a big show and with two goals, she delivered. Chapeau. Lionel Messi is a phenomenon but now and then, it takes a visual representation to accentuate the fact. The graphic below was produced before last night's round of Major League Soccer matches but no matter: in attacking terms, look how far out in front Messi is this season. Two questions occur to me. One: should it concern MLS that its entire roster is trailing that far behind a star in his twilight years (albeit one with Messi's generational genius)? And two: what have Inter Miami got when this guy doesn't turn it on? Because last night, Miami took a slapping away to FC Cincinnati, 3-0. It ended Messi's run of five consecutive braces and since the opening month, Miami have claimed just six points from the seven MLS fixtures in which he hasn't scored. Carrying a club and a league at the same time takes some backbone, and it's a good job Messi has one. With Liverpool, Newcastle, Isak and Ekitike hotting up, I thought we'd finish by revisiting a funny article from 2022: Adam Hurrey's guide to the quintessential transfer saga. It's a definitive glossary of terms, many of which we'll be seeing as the Isak skirmish plays out: leading the race, eyeing a move, keeping tabs, mulling over a bid, heading for the exit door. I'm with Adam here — edging closer ('a genuinely ridiculous state of affairs, I'm sorry') is where I draw the line, but brace yourselves for plenty of it.
