Test-Driving The 2025 Mini Aceman John Cooper Works
I believe in the saying: 'Life's too short to drive boring cars'.
After passing my driving test, I made a beeline for a Daihatsu Copen, a tiny two-seater that looks like a Croc sandal. I didn't care that people laughed as I tootled past with the roof down, my head poking out like a protruding toe through a worn-out sock. I was driving something special.
A few years ago, I bought a Mini Paceman Cooper S, also known as the Countryman's ugly sister. It's good, but when I heard Mini was dropping the 'P' with its new model, my intrigue spiked.
I never tested the Mini Aceman. But I, of course, said yes when Mini asked if I fancied a go in its lightly spiced John Cooper Works (JCW) guise.
It doesn't take me long to become smitten with odd cars; it's usually love at first sight. Was that the case with the Mini Aceman JCW? I'm not sure, but hear me out. I like its startled face: its gawking eye-like headlights and its large mouth-esque plastic 'grille'—it's almost like it's seen John Cooper's ghost. But it didn't quite make me tingle the same way as the first JCW Countryman did.
2025 Mini Aceman JCW
From the side and rear, the Aceman JCW follows the Countryman's design cues but is smaller in size, and this got me, and many others, asking a question: Who's it for?
The answer is simple: like Mini's, but don't like the idea of cramming bags of shopping and a Great Dane in the boot of a three-door Cooper hatch? The Aceman's the one for you. Of course, you can opt for the larger Countryman with its 505-litre boot, but it's a bit more cumbersome.
The Aceman JCW shares a very similar interior with the JCW Electric three-door, but it has a loftier roofline. The pin-sharp touchscreen is filled with quirky animations and features, including a selfie camera.
Entry-level Minis are usually fun, but if you want to take pleasure to the next level, you'd usually opt for a Cooper S or the ASBO-inducing John Cooper Works (JCW). The latter's usually powered by potent and burbly engines that aid the Mini's already naughty character, but that's recently changed. You can still buy ICE versions, but Mini's upped its EV game, giving buyers a broader choice.
2025 Mini Aceman JCW
The Mini Aceman JCW shares its 254bhp motor and 54.2kWh battery with its low-slung three-door JCW sibling. This means a 242-mile combined (WLTP) range, 0-to-62 mph in 6.4 seconds and a 124mph top speed, but there's a catch. To get all 254 bhp, you pull back on an aptly named 'boost' paddle behind the steering wheel, which gives you 10 seconds of hair-on-fire mid-range madness.
Straight-line pace isn't enough for a JCW, many cars at the same price point can achieve those acceleration figures, instead, JCW's were always praised for their tight chassis and snappy brakes. But the Aceman variant has been left in the oven that little bit too long: its chassis is just too firm. A Porsche 911 GT3 almost feels Rolls-Royce-like in comparison.
The Aceman JCW is a compact electric SUV, and it should be able to traverse crumbling urban roads at 30 mph without bouncing its occupants through the sunroof. I noticed a slight improvement as speed increased, but I was always of the car fidgeting beneath me. Likewise, it doesn't like mid-corner bumps. Hitting these throws the car off course and largely dampens the fun factor.
2025 Mini Aceman JCW interior
Finding smooth tarmac drastically changes the Aceman JCW's behaviour. Its steering is tight and precise, and throwing its 1,800kg around bends is heaps of fun thanks to its grippy tyres. This, combined with snappy brakes, means it can be amusing.
Regarding range, my test car averaged 3.5mi/kWh over motorways, dual carriageways and country roads. Realistically, the Aceman JCW should return circa 180 miles in warmer weather over potholed roads and roughly 190 on slower routes.
Mini's injected the Aceman JCW with its zesty spirit. It's like a four-wheeled carnival; you'll never get bored of touching or looking at it. The Mini Aceman JCW also boasts great efficiency and has a decent range, and enough interior space, but it's simply too firm for most roads.

Acura Kills The TLX After Only Selling 7,478 Of Them In 2024
While the Acura Integra just got a mid-cycle refresh, the larger TLX will soon get the axe. Automotive News reports the midsize sedan will end production by the end of the month, and since it's already July 23, that means the TLX only has days to live, not weeks. RIP in peace, Acura TLX. Granted, it isn't like the TLX was a huge seller. Last year, Acura only sold 7,478 examples in the U.S., down from 16,731 sales in 2023. Meanwhile, 2023 was a much better year for the TLX than 2022 was, when it still only found 11,508 buyers. For comparison, BMW sold 25,315 examples of the 5 Series here in 2024 and moved 22,401 units in 2023. Considering how poorly it's been selling, it isn't terribly surprising that Acura would decide to pull the plug. That said, it doesn't sound like it's entirely the TLX's fault. In order to prep its Marysville Auto Plant to build electric vehicles, Acura moved Accord, Integra and TLX production to the same line, which likely limited how many TLXs it could build. "Those production changes are crimping their sales because they can't build, and with an Accord facelift on the horizon, they have to decide whether to invest in both vehicles or just let the TLX go," Stephanie Brinley, associate director of S&P Global Mobility, told AutoNews. Read more: These Are The Worst Transmission Recalls Of The Last 5 Years Only A Matter Of Time Then again, the deck was also stacked against the TLX's success, even before the first example rolled off the assembly line. It was, after all, a new sedan in a world that no longer likes sedans. Instead, most buyers want a crossover of some sort. Even if you're just looking at luxury vehicles, sedans reportedly dropped from 22% of the market in 2022 to 18% in 2024. "The migration to utility vehicles has just not stopped, even in the luxury segment," Brinley told AutoNews. "Luxury sedans are still more popular in the luxury segment relatively than they are in the mainstream segment, but even so, the share keeps dropping." The other issue, of course, was that even though the TLX and Acura's performance version, the TLX Type S, were pretty darn good cars, they both competed in seriously crowded segments with long-established players, as well as newcomers such as the Cadillac CT5 and Genesis G80. And while you could expect the TLX to cost less to maintain and repair in the long run, it struggled to stand out. Sure, it came with a fancy all-wheel drive system and didn't cost quite as much as some other cars in the segment, but clearly, that wasn't enough to bring in a steady stream of paying customers. Then again, prices on used TLX Type Ss are already getting down into the low $30,000 range, so maybe the upside here is that you'll soon be able to pick up a pre-owned, all-wheel-drive TLX with 355 horsepower in the mid-to-high twenties. So at least there's that. It's just too bad Acura didn't offer it with a manual transmission. Want more like this? Karen Arcanjo Champions Poland's Rich Traditions Of Yarn Craft
Karen Arcanjo Spring/Summer 2025 KAREN ARCANJO The Boho revival in 2025 saw the proliferation of handmade elements like crochet, lace, and knits on the runways and Spring/Summer collections. It was a welcome shift from the extreme austerity and restraint of quiet luxury, which had dominated the sartorial conversation for several seasons. In Poland, a new crop of emerging fashion designers are bringing time-honored traditions of yarn craft to the runways and the world. Four years ago, Karen Arcanjo established her eponymous brand in the small town of Orneta (population: 8,951). Having been raised in a household where everyday objects are always made by hand, the fledgling designer rooted her garments on handed-down knitting, crocheting, and lacework techniques. The big idea was to 'develop seamless shapes that are knitted directly into structure.' Instead of crochet and knits as trimmings for embellishment, pieces are looped and loomed directly into form. Karen explains, 'This technique gives our pieces both tension and softness. It not only reduces waste, but also reinforces our desire to create slowly and with intention.' The Toni dress, for example, was shaped and completed entirely through knitting and crocheting. Karen Arcanjo has also integrated the use of fine leathers, sheepskin, cashmere, cotton and silk, most of which are dead stock or done in small batches. When items from the previous season are unsold, they are reworked into newer pieces. Hand knitted Tori dress by Karen Arcanjo copy KAREN ARCANJO Karen Arcanjo's Moodboard KAREN ARCANJO Design codes of the brand read like an ongoing exploration of folk elements harmoniously blending with contemporary forms and tailoring. 'The influence of folklore exists in subtle gestures–the repetition of hand-done textures, rounded shapes, and ornamental stitching,' says Karen. Flared sleeves, gathered collars, long hemlines, and strong shoulders also reference traditional Polish clothing such as the Góralski wool coats or corsets worn by Mazovian dancers. Every collection is balanced out by impeccably tailored garments. These include wide leg trousers, coats, jackets, and blazers. Karen intimates, 'That tension between delicate and bold is what defines our women. It's a duality we fully embrace: craft and cut, fluid and constructed, emotion and edge. There is a sense of drama and dignity. The restraint, repetition, and proud simplicity.' Tailored pieces balance out the softness of hand knitted gowns at Karen Arcanjo KAREN ARCANJO 'It's a duality we fully embrace: craft and cut, fluid and constructed, emotion and edge. There is a sense of drama and dignity. The restraint, repetition, and proud simplicity.' Karen Arcanjo works closely and exclusively with Polish artisans. From inception, the brand has actively led the charge in establishing a regional craft initiative in Orneta and Warmia. Both towns are regarded as centers for traditional knitting and crocheting in Poland. Karen details, 'Each season, the brand organizes workshops (internally referred to as an Artisan Bridge Program) co-hosted with local community centers where older skilled knitters teach traditional techniques such as Lowicki lace loops and Kashubian cable stitches–to younger artisans. Our goal is not just to celebrate these practices but to give them continuity — which means protecting access to raw materials, and creating consistent work for the women who hold these techniques. There's beauty in the slowness of this process.' Emerging Polish fashion designer, Karen Arcanjo KAREN ARCANJO It 's not just craft as output but cultural inheritance, ensuring the continuity of tradition and consistency in quality. Karen emphasizes that artisans are engaged as partners of the brand. 'They are not employees in the traditional sense. This is not factory labor.' Karene emphasizes. 'They work under formal contracts with fair compensations and seasonal bonuses.' The same mentor artisans have worked with the brand since its founding. In the past four years, the Karen Arcanjo team has successfully guided a new generation of apprentice artisans. 'It 's not just craft as output but cultural inheritance, ensuring the continuity of tradition and consistency in quality.' Admittedly, the journey towards producing more consciously and sustainably, especially for an independent fashion brand, is one paved with countless challenges. But Karen ponders, 'To choose intentionality over markers and KPIs surely slowed us down. However, we stayed focused on investing in craft. We cultivated a culture that instilled a deep love for handmade arts and heritage mentorships. We continuously strive for transparency at every stage of production.' Light blue hand knitted dress by Karen Arcanjo KAREN ARCANJO Although deeply rooted in heritage and tradition, the brand is clear about its mission and future goals. 'In many ways, our mission is to modernize these crafts not by re-interpreting them, but by dignifying them–elevating their place in the fashion conversation,' says Karen. 'We see a balance between growth and staying true to what has birthed us. We want to become more intimate with our community through experience based events across both our native market and outside. We are opening doors to global presence, while defending our hand-craft approach.' As of this writing, Karen Arcanjo has signed on with leading e-tailers like Moda Operandi and FWRD. New pieces will be available on both sites by Fall. Printemps and MyTheresa have also expressed an interest in the brand. According to the brand's strategist, Sara King Moura, Bergdorf also wants to have a walk through with aren Arcanjo .'Establishing our presence across both the US and the European market is key,' she shares. 'Instead of rushing into broad collections, Karen Arcanjo has extended the lifespan of the Spring/Summer 2025 into Fall/Winter. This has allowed the brand to fully develop the Spring/Summer 2026 collection as our first considered, 360-degree presentation. It will be our debut collection, complete with expanded categories that include jewelry.'

Nium and iPiD Deepen Strategic Collaboration to Advance VoP Compliance and Global Fraud Prevention
SINGAPORE, Aug. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Nium, the leading global infrastructure for real-time cross-border payments, today announced the expansion of Verify, its account validation service, in Europe, through a strengthened strategic partnership with iPiD, the provider of the Know Your Payee (KYP) solution, iPiD Node. As part of this deepening collaboration, iPiD is also leveraging Nium's Verify technology to enhance its own validation capabilities, marking a mutual partnership between two of Singapore's most prominent fintech innovators. By tapping into Nium's established account verification infrastructure, iPiD is able to enhance its global coverage. This two-way partnership underscores both companies' shared vision to increase trust, reduce fraud, and meet evolving regulatory demands in cross-border payments. With VoP becoming a regulatory requirement in the EU by October 2025, payment service providers (PSPs) will be expected not only to verify payee details but also to demonstrate that verification was attempted and properly recorded. Through this collaboration, the integration of iPiD Node extends the reach of Nium's Verify solution in the EU, with audit-ready coverage in the additional 41 countries of the SEPA zone; adding to Nium's instant account verification capabilities in 25 countries globally. "We're proud to work alongside Nium — not just as fellow Singapore fintechs, but as like-minded teams solving the next generation of cross-border compliance and fraud challenges."
