Maharashtra logs 59 new COVID-19 cases; tally since Jan 1 at 873, active count at 494

Mumbai, Jun 2 (PTI) As many as 59 new COVID-19 cases have been reported in Maharashtra, 20 of them in Mumbai alone, taking the number of infections since January 1 this year to 873 in the state, the health department said on Monday.
Mild symptoms are being found in COVID-19 patients in the state and testing and treatment facilities are made available by the department, it said.
These symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, sore throat and congestion or runny nose, among others.
Mumbai has reported 483 COVID-19 cases since January 1 and a bulk of it – 477 – were recorded in May alone, said the department.
Nine patients have succumbed to the ailment in the state since the start of the year, seven of whom had comorbidities (simultaneous presence of two or more medical conditions), including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, nephrotic syndrome (kidney disorder) with hypoglycemic seizures (caused by very low blood sugar levels), cerebral infarction (cerebrovascular disease) and ILD (interstitial lung disease), the release added.

SC order not a quick fix, ineffective ABCs, lack of data worsen crisis
CHENNAI: The keenness expressed by Municipal Administration Minister K N Nehru on Tuesday to implement the Supreme Court's order to remove stray dogs from the streets appeared to be an indication of a quick fix after failing to effectively implement the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme for over two decades. Activists point out that, despite spending tens of crores every year, the stray population remained much higher than official estimates. To start with, there is no reliable state-wide data on the stray population. According to the nation-wide Livestock Census done in 2019, TN had 4.41 lakh stray dogs. Of the 25 municipal corporations, only four have completed surveys in the last two years. Tambaram recently undertook a survey, estimating around 45,000 dogs. The data from four corporations (Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode and Vellore) show that they together have roughly 3.3 lakh dogs, which is nearly 75% of the state-wide population in 2019, indicating the rapid growth the state seems to have witnessed, particularly during and post-Covid. As per this data, Chennai has 1.8 lakh strays, but the actual numbers could be 2.2-2.3 lakh, sources said. Of the strays in these four corporations, only a meagre 19.8% have undergone ABC procedure. Local bodies should ideally target sterilising 70%-80% of the dogs in a ward in a city over a period of 5-10 years. A meagre 20% coverage would leave the remaining to reproduce at an average of 4-6 pups per litter. Shravan Krishnan, director of Besant Memorial Animal Dispensary, said instead of trying to implement the unviable suggestion of the SC, local body officials who failed to properly implement ABC should be pulled up. The worsening of the problem is evident from the rise in dog-bite cases as well. According to Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme data, cases rose from 3.6 lakh in 2022 to 4.8 lakh in 2024 in TN.

Health Ministry launches SHRESTH index to strengthen state drug regulatory systems

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Union Health Ministry has launched the State Health Regulatory Excellence Index, a first-of-its-kind national initiative to benchmark and strengthen state drug regulatory systems through a transparent and data-driven framework. In a meeting attended virtually by the health secretaries, principal health secretaries and the drugs controllers from states and Union Territories, Srivastava reiterated that the health of all citizens begins with the safety, quality, and efficacy of the medicines they consume. Ensuring their quality is the government's commitment, she said. 'Our federal structure is designed to regulate a complex and globally significant pharmaceutical industry. The only way forward is cooperative action to ensure medicines made in India are trusted everywhere, starting with every citizen in India,' the Union health secretary said. Srivastava highlighted the crucial role played by states and Union Territories in ensuring quality manufacturing and distribution in India and the need for recognising and supporting their best practices and growth. 'States have strong regulatory certification. State Health Regulatory Excellence Index (SHRESTH) is a virtual gap assessment tool for states to assess their current position and help towards maturity certification,' she added. Highlighting India's achievement of WHO ML3 status for vaccines, Srivastava stressed the next step is to elevate medicines to the same global standard, advancing international harmonisation and reinforcing India's role as the 'pharmacy of the world'. Several upcoming initiatives were also outlined, including the extension of the Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) dashboard to all states, the proposed symposium on Drug Regulatory Systems, and the expansion of joint training and audits. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Raghuvanshi highlighted that states will be divided into two categories — manufacturing and primarily distribution — and will be ranked accordingly on the SHRESTH index. SHRESTH will have 27 indices for Manufacturing States across five key themes — human resources, infrastructure, licensing activities, surveillance activities and responsiveness — and 23 indices for primarily distribution states. States will submit the data on predefined metrics to CDSCO, which will be collected by the 25th day of every month, and these metrics will be scored on the first day of next month and shared with all states and Union Territories, Dr Raghuvanshi said.
