Action News Jax breaks down the City of Jacksonville's top ‘Ticket Takers'

As the Jacksonville City Council spars with the mayor's office over the distribution of the free tickets to games, concerts, and events at city-run venues, Action News Jax is digging into the numbers and revealing the city's top ticket-takers. Among city council members, Councilmember Terrance Freeman (R-Group 1 At-Large) topped the list with 96 requests over the past two years, followed by Councilmember Reggie Gaffney Jr. (D-District 8) at 37, and Councilmember Ju'coby Pittman (D-District 10) at 28. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< In response to making the top three list, all three council members issued statements. 'I've used tickets offered to all 'Council members and shared access with the residence (sic) and distributed to constituents who wouldn't otherwise have access to events. The tickets have been a long-standing practice for Council members. Ticket assess allow me to stay connected with my constituents. If policy changes regarding the distribution of tickets, I will continue to follow policy. 28 tickets were reported and 5 were unused, revised ticket distribution is 23 that were used,' Pittman said. 'It's no secret that my constituents are my top priority. In District 8, a lot of families, kids, teachers, and even first responders don't always get the chance to enjoy events that bring people together. When I request tickets, it's not always for me; it's oftentimes so the people I serve can experience something uplifting and memorable that brings Jacksonville as a whole together, leaving no one out. I believe everyone deserves moments of joy and connection, no matter their circumstances. That's why the number you've received is the number it is. And I wish to continue providing this opportunity to them,' Gaffney Jr. said. 'Blessed to have a large family and over the course of going on 8 years have attended events,' Freeman said. RELATED: City Council requested more than twice as many free city tickets as mayor's office over past 2 years When you factor in requests made by council aides, Freeman remains at the top with 117 tickets over two years, while the ticket reform bill sponsor Councilmember Ron Salem (R-Group 2 At-Large) moves up into second at 97, and Vice President Nick Howland (R-Group 3 At-Large) bumps up to third with 52. Salem and Howland did not comment on the stats. Council President Kevin Carrico (R-District 4) argued many of the requested tickets likely went to constituents. 'This isn't about tit-for-tat at this point on who went to what shows. It's about cleaning it up and making sure that these tickets that are contractually obligated through contracts to come to the city are given to people who deserve to go,' Carrico said. In Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan's Office, Chief Administrative Officer Karen Bowling led the pack with 64 tickets requested over the past two years, followed by her Deputy CAO Kelli O'Leary with 53, and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Brittany Norris came in third with 28 tickets. 'This practice began many years ago for economic development efforts and building relationships with community members. That remains true today,' the mayor's office told Action News Jax in a statement. 'It's part of the mayor's job to be an ambassador and represent the city. It's also useful for those who oversee event venue operations to evaluate the citizen experience and make it better.' [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] But without any way to verify who actually received the requested tickets, University of North Florida Political Science Professor Dr. Michael Binder argued it lends itself to questions of potential favoritism or abuse. 'Are you giving them away to lobbyists? You know, who is getting them? What's happening? It's a bad look all around, and you know, maybe this is something good that could come from some middle school back and forth between council and the administration for once,' Binder said. Both the Mayor's Office and Council President Carrico said they're open to introducing more transparency and accountability into the ticket request process and support prohibiting elected officials from personally using the tickets on themselves. NBA Legend Shaquille O'Neal Had Words for Dwight Howard

Earlier in 2025, the NBA had confirmed that Dwight Howard would be among the players inducted into the Hall of Fame. The former NBA star made eight All-Star teams, eight All-NBA teams, five All-Defense teams, won three Defensive Player of the Year awards, and won a title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. After Howard found out about his induction, he took to his personal X account to reveal who he wanted to present him at the Hall of Fame, writing, "I want KG , Shaq, and Kareem to walk me out," with a prayer emoji and a #hof. Howard clearly indicated that he and O'Neal had squashed their years-long beef with one another through this message. However, on August 7, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced who would be presenting for each player who got inducted. In Howard's case, that would be Patrick Ewing, Robert Parish, Dennis Rodman, and Dominique Wilkins. O'Neal's name was not on the list. Shaquile O'Neal Reveals How He And Dwight Howard Worked Things Out Over the weekend, FOX Sports' Rachel Nichols talked to O'Neal about Howard, where the former confirmed that he would be on stage to present for the latter at the Hall of Fame. He also explained to Nichols how he and Howard squashed their beef with each other. "We finally had a heart-to-heart," O'neal told Nichols. "The same thing I did with him, the same thing I did with Kobe (Bryant), (Dwyane) Wade, Penny Hardaway. That's how I motivate young players to become great. I treat 'em like I don't like 'em and I try to get 'em upset because I know guys like Dwight and Penny and Kobe especially and D-Wade. When you upset 'em, they play at a higher level. "But we hashed it out. He thought I generally disliked him. I told him, 'No, that's not the case.' As a leader, sometimes you have to find different ways of motivating youngsters." The difference between Howard and the other former NBA stars O'Neal mentioned is that he was never teammates with him, though they did play for a few of the same teams, most notably the Lakers and the Orlando Magic. During Howard's playing days, he and O'Neal had some choice words for each other, particularly because Howard called himself Superman as a nickname when O'Neal did the same thing when he played. This has led to an argument on X even after Howard's NBA days were over. Still, it appears Howard and O'Neal have put that behind them, as Howard has voiced his desire to have O'Neal there, and O'Neal has confirmed that the feeling is mutual. Braves third baseman Austin Riley's injury-shortened season ends following core surgery

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley will miss the remainder of the season after having core injury surgery on Thursday. The Braves announced the surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia. Riley, who was placed on the 10-day injured list for the second time in two months on Aug. 4 with a strained lower abdominal muscle, is expected to return in time for spring training next year. Riley first landed on the IL on July 12 with a strained abdomen. He returned on July 25 and finished the season hitting .260 with 16 homers and 54 RBI. The Braves also claimed right-hander Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned right-hander Dane Dunning to Triple-A Gwinnett. Also, the team added outfielder Jake Fraley to its roster after optioning RHP Connor Seabold to Gwinnett. Fraley was designated for assignment by Cincinnati on Sunday before being claimed by the Braves. Left-hander Dylan Dodd was recalled from Gwinnett, and infielder Luke Williams was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique muscle. ___ AP MLB:
