Ex-MP Shetty warns of statewide stir if Kadu's demands go unheard

Nagpur / Amravati: After Manoj Jarange's massive protest for Maratha quota last year which became the focal point of Maharashtra politics, a new epicentre of 'agitation politics' is now emerging in Amravati where Prahar Janshakti Party chief Bacchu Kadu is on an indefinite hunger strike for agrarian issues.

As well known faces start streaming in to meet Kadu at the protest site, many feel a political storm is quietly brewing ahead of the crucial local body polls in the state.
Just a day after Jarange met Kadu to extend his support, on Thursday NCP (Sharad Pawar) MLA Rohit Pawar drove down to Amravati to declare his party's support. And Pawar was not alone. Well known farmer leader and former MP Raju Shetty also declared his backing for Kadu and warned of a statewide "chakka jam" if the govt did not take cognizance of farmer issues being raised by Kadu.
Thursday was the fifth day of Kadu's fast at Gurukunj Mozari town, around 35km from Amravati.
Shetty said, "The state govt is taking no action despite on an average eight farmers were committing suicide every day." He blamed wrong policies of the Centre for farmers not getting price for their produce.
Pawar, who went to Amravati along with ex-minister Anil Deshmukh's son Salil, said, "Kadu's agitation is for the benefit of farmers and that is why we are supporting it.
When we raise issues related to farmers, the govt simply mocks us. If the govt ignores Kadu's demands, then it will prove costly for the ruling alliance, because people have realized that Mahayuti has fooled them for votes as none of the promises were fulfilled.
" He added, though Kadu has started the agitation from Vidarbha, it will soon spread across the state. "The legislature session is starting by June end, and we will raise these issues there," said Pawar.

Shetty, while talking about the specific issues being raised by Kadu, said, "The farmers were forced to sell soyabean below the assured price in open market this year because the govt gave rebate to industrialists on palm oil import. Had this not happened, farmers would have got good price to their soybean crop. But this govt cares only about industrialists."
"We have not raised any unreasonable demands. The govt should take cognizance of Kadu's agitation and take farmers' issues in the right earnest.
If the state govt does not respond to the demands and take a concrete decision by June 14, no one will be allowed to move in the state," Shetty warned.
He also criticized CM Devendra Fadnavis and deputy CM Ajit Pawar, saying, "The Mahayuti govt had promised complete farm loan waiver before assembly polls. But what happened next?"
"Ajit Pawar claimed the state is not in the pink of financial health. But it was Pawar who had ordered a collector to change his vehicle when its air-conditioner developed snag during his Kolhapur tour, baring his spendthrift ways."
Shetty chided the govt for prioritizing bullet train project than granting farm loan waiver.
Shetty also targeted Amravati guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule saying, "Bawankule takes a helicopter to attend the birthday of a sand mafia, but has no gumption to meet Kadu who has been agitating since Sunday over farmers' issues."

Supriya Sule rules out alliance with Ajit Pawar or BJP in upcoming municipal elections

Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule has ruled out any alliance with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP or Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming municipal elections. Sule is on a tour of Pune district during which she visited newly-appointed municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to discuss various issues related to her Lok Sabha (LS) constituency, Baramati. Sule told media persons: 'In a democracy, there should be dialogue. We should meet all party leaders and this is Maharashtra's tradition. But in the coming elections, we will never go with the BJP.' Recently, state president of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, Sunil Tatkare, had said, 'We have entered an alliance with the BJP and we will remain with them. If someone wants to join us, they should accept this principle.' Whereas the city president of the NCP (SP), Prashant Jagtap, said, 'Supriya Sule has made it clear that there will be no alliance with the BJP or Ajit Pawar-led party. We are prepared to contest the municipal elections and ready to face them.' For the last few weeks, there have been rumours about the likelihood of both NCP factions coming together. Recently however, both parties celebrated 'Foundation Day' in Pune, sending out a clear message that there will be no merger of the two factions. It is now clear that the two NCP factions will contest the upcoming civic elections separately and against each other.

Bawankule meets protesting Bachchu Kadu, Cong backs his stir

Nagpur/Amravati: Guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Friday met ex-MLA Bachchu Kadu at Amravati and urged him to end his indefinite fast, which has continued for six days now. On Friday, the Congress also threw its weight behind Kadu's ongoing agitation for farmers, just a day after NCP (Sharad) MLA Rohit Pawar drove down to the Amravati protest site where Kadu is on indefinite fast. Earlier this week, Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange, and ex-minister Anil Deshmukh too met Kadu. Bawankule's visit to Kadu is seen as an important development as the monsoon session of the legislature is scheduled from June 30. Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal said, "Congress has decided to back Kadu's ongoing agitation, which addresses various farmers' issues. The concerns raised by Kadu are real. Farmers are facing a severe crisis, with no fair prices for their produce, a high rate of farmer suicides in the state, and unfulfilled election promises of loan waivers by the ruling government. As a result, farmers, already in distress, are completely hopeless and disheartened. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like מהפכת החשמל מגיעה אליכם: עד 20% הנחה בחשבון החשמל החודשי Hot Energy מידע נוסף Undo In such a situation, there is a need for everyone to stand in solidarity with the farmers." Earlier on Friday, high drama unfolded at the protest site, when a member of Kadu's Prahar Janshakti Party consumed poison, and was rushed to the hospital by the medical team present on site. The activist, identified as Ajay Bhagwatrao Chaudhary, has been admitted to a private hospital at Warud. Chaudhary, like many other Prahar activists, had turned restless on Friday citing 'government's apathy' towards Kadu's Annatyag Andolan, now into its sixth day, at Gurukunj Mozari (about 30km from Amravati city). Kadu's agitation raises issues related to farmers, divyangs, widows, fishermen etc. Before Bawankule's visit too the govt has tried to persuade Kadu to withdraw the agitation. Ministers Bharat Gogawale, Pankaja Munde and Jaykumar Gore held online meetings with Kadu, who expressed his resolve to continue the agitation as no concrete assurance reportedly came out of these meetings. As the monsoon session of the legislature is set to begin later this month, NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar has already hinted that Kadu's agitation will be an issue discussed there. Now with Congress backing Kadu, the opposition seems to have found a cause to take up on the floor of the house. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Supriya demands white paper on ten years of civil aviation ministry functioning

Pune: Raising the safety concerns of passengers following the plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, NCP (SP) working president Supriya Sule on Friday demanded that the civil aviation ministry release a white paper on its functioning over the last 10 years. "There is no doubt that there has been improvement in infrastructure, but at the same time, we cannot ignore the fact that the number of accidents has increased. The safety of passengers in road, railway, and air transport remains a concern, and the central govt needs to take up the moral responsibility for the mishaps in all the public transport systems," Supriya said while interacting with newspersons in Pune. The Baramati Lok Sabha MP said that she would demand a detailed discussion on the plane crash in the upcoming session of Parliament. "Everyone is waiting for the reports to know the reason for the crash. However, a detailed discussion in the upcoming Parliament session is required on not just the Ahmedabad plane crash incident but also earlier mishaps. We demand that the civil aviation ministry should come out with a white paper on its functioning over the last 10 years. In the next Parliament session, along with demanding discussion on Pahalgam terror attack, we would also demand a discussion on mishaps in the public transport sector," Supriya said. Criticising the central govt, Supriya said, "The govt is advertising that they have made air travel affordable so that even a common man can travel by flight. However, if there is no assurance of safety, what will any individual do with the discount they would be getting? While improving infrastructure, the Centre should not lose focus on the safety of people." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
