KUCHING (June 30): The unique culture of the Rara community, a small Bidayuh sub-ethnic group, deserves greater recognition and promotion, despite their presence being concentrated in only three villages within the Lundu district, said Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang.
Speaking at the the Ngelayakng Daunt Bonos 2025 programme in Kampung Pasir Tengah, Lundu on Saturday night, Billy pledged his full support for any initiative aimed at uplifting and preserving the identity and traditions of the Rara.
'At the recent Narakng Salako Rara programme in Lundu, the Rara community performed the distinctive Bari' Dance, which left a lasting impression on the attendees.
'The Bari' Dance will be featured at next year's state-level Gawai Dayak celebration in 2026 to showcase the Rara community's cultural richness,' he said.
The Rara, along with the Salako community, are two Bidayuh sub-ethnic groups residing mainly in Lundu and Sematan districts.
During the same event, Billy also officiated the opening of the newly upgraded 'Rumah Adat' (traditional house) of Kampung Pasir Tengah, which was fully restored and enhanced this year.

Memorial proposed in Serian to honour professor who documented Bidayuh life

Minos (fourth left) MDS councillors and officials are joined by some of the Mentu Tapu folks as they visit the hall that Geddes helped to build. KUCHING (Aug 17): A memorial and gallery to honour the late Prof William Geddes, the New Zealand academic who documented Bidayuh life in the 1950s, is being proposed at Kampung Mentu Tapu in Serian. Serian District Council chairman Dato Peter Minos said the council, together with Kedup assemblyman Datuk Martin Ben, is considering the initiative in recognition of Geddes' invaluable contributions to the Bidayuh community. He explained that Geddes had written the book 'Nine Dayak Nights' based on his experiences living with the Bidayuh community at Mentu Tapu. 'Geddes lived in Kampung Mentu Tapu from around 1950 to 1951 while conducting research on the Bidayuhs, then known as the Land Dayaks, on behalf of the British colonial government. 'His book Nine Dayak Nights and accompanying report remain classic references on Bidayuh culture and traditions,' Minos said in a statement. He noted that Geddes' works captured the community's history, customs and character with great depth and accuracy. As such, he strongly believes that setting up the memorial, albeit a modest one for a start, would be a fitting tribute for Geddes. 'This is the least we can do for this great man who did a good turn for the Bidayuhs. We must never forget our roots, and remembering Geddes is part of remembering our history,' he stressed. According to Minos, he was told Geddes returned to Kampung Mentu Tapu briefly in the 1970s and 1980s, and even helped build a small village hall, which still stands today, though no longer in use. He pointed out that although Geddes passed away many years ago, villagers of Mentu Tapu still remember him fondly. Minos, who visited the village recently, said the people expressed their gratitude to the professor for putting their community on the map. 'They told me, 'Geddes made our village famous. We really thank him for that.' It shows the depth of their appreciation and respect,' he said. Bidayuh life Kampung Mentu Tapu lead Peter Minos Prof William Geddes Serian

Kampung Selampit gets second fibre boat pending bridge completion

Billy (second left) performs the symbolic handing over of the boat. KUCHING (Aug 16): Residents of Kampung Selampit have received a second fibre boat to facilitate their daily travel while awaiting the completion of a bridge to the village. Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang symbolically handed over the boat to villagers in a brief ceremony yesterday at the Batang Kayan riverbank in Lundu. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, Billy said the boat will complement the first unit provided earlier this year, ensuring the community can continue to travel safely and smoothly during the bridge's construction. 'We want Kampung Selampit residents to have safe and convenient transportation for daily needs, especially in education, healthcare and economic activities. This second boat completes the temporary facilities until the bridge is ready,' he said. He added that the total cost for the two boats, including support equipment, was RM290,400 — a vital investment for the well-being and continuity of the local community. 'Safety is our priority, and we remind all users to operate the boats in accordance with the set rules,' he said. On the Selampit Bridge project, he noted that construction of the bridge pillars has now reached the middle section, reflecting positive progress. The Selampit Bridge project is a long-awaited infrastructure development in the Opar constituency. The urgency for the bridge project has heightened, following a tragedy in August last year when three students died after the boat they were travelling on to get to school with 13 other students sank in Batang Kayan. The incident was believed to have been caused by overloading. It was reported the 200-metre-long and 6.5-metre-wide bridge was estimated to cost RM27.94 million. Construction began in October last year and is expected to be completed within three years. The project, implemented under the Sarawak government's jurisdiction, is spearheaded by the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak Meanwhile, those present at the boat handover were political secretaries to the premier Dato Peter Nyomek and Niponi Undek and Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) special administrative officer Datu Ik Pahon Joyik.
