Israel approves settlement project that could divide West Bank
Israel gave final approval for a controversial settlement project in the occupied West Bank that would effectively cut the territory in two, and that Palestinians and rights groups say could destroy plans for a future Palestinian state. Settlement development in E1, an open tract of land east of Jerusalem, has been under consideration for more than two decades, but was frozen due to U.S. pressure during previous administrations. On Wednesday, the project received final approval from the Planning and Building Committee after the last petitions against it were rejected on Aug. 6. If the process moves quickly, infrastructure work could begin in the next few months and construction of homes could start in around a year. The plan includes around 3,500 apartments to expand the settlement of Maale Adumim, far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said during a press conference at the site last Thursday. Smotrich cast the approval as a riposte to western countries that announced their plans to recognize a Palestinian state in recent weeks. 'This reality finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state, because there is nothing to recognize and no one to recognize,' Smotrich told reporters. 'Anyone in the world who tries today to recognize a Palestinian state will receive an answer from us on the ground.' The location of E1 is significant because it is one of the last geographical links between Ramallah, in the northern West Bank, and Bethlehem in the southern West Bank. The two cities are 22 kilometers (14 miles) apart by air, but Palestinians traveling between them must take a wide detour and pass through multiple Israeli checkpoints, adding hours to the journey. The hope for final status negotiations for a Palestinian state was to have the region eventually serve as a direct link between the cities. Peace Now, an organization that tracks settlement expansion in the West Bank, called the E1 project 'deadly for the future of Israel and for any chance of achieving a peaceful two-state solution' which is 'guaranteeing many more years of bloodshed.' Israel's plans to expand settlements are part of an increasingly difficult reality for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank as the world's attention focuses on the war in Gaza. There have been marked increases in attacks by settlers on Palestinians, evictions from Palestinian towns, and checkpoints that choke freedom of movement, as well as several Palestinian attacks on Israelis. More than 700,000 Israelis now live in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories occupied by Israel in 1967 and sought by the Palestinians for a future state. The international community overwhelmingly considers Israeli settlement construction in these areas to be illegal and an obstacle to peace. Israel's government is dominated by religious and ultranationalist politicians with close ties to the settlement movement. Smotrich, previously a firebrand settler leader and now finance minister, has been granted Cabinet-level authority over settlement policies and vowed to double the settler population in the West Bank. Israel has occupied east Jerusalem and claims it as part of its capital, which is not internationally recognized. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Egypt, Russia FMs hold talks on bilateral ties, regional developments
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held talks over the telephone on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as part of regular consultations and ongoing coordination between Egypt and Russia on relations and issues of mutual concern. The two ministers reviewed the trajectory of bilateral relations, voicing satisfaction with their tangible progress and affirming mutual keenness to further strengthen cooperation in various fields. Abdelatty praised Egypt's historical and strategic relations with Russia, underpinned by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which serves as the guiding framework for shared cooperation. He noted the momentum in political consultations and joint technical committees, reflecting the strong political will to advance economic, trade, and scientific cooperation. Abdelatty highlighted progress made in strategic projects, foremost among them the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant and the Russian Industrial Zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, as well as efforts to boost Russian industrial investments. On regional developments, the talks covered the situation in Gaza, with Abdelatty outlining Egypt's intensive mediation efforts with Qatar and the US to secure a ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian aid delivery, and release hostages and detainees. He pointed to important progress achieved, reflected in recent Cairo consultations with a Palestinian delegation on the proposal put forward by US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff and accepted by Hamas, stressing that the ball is now in Israel's court and underlining the need for pressure on Tel Aviv to accept the plan to help alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The top diplomat also reviewed preparations to host a planned Gaza International Conference on Early Recovery and Reconstruction once a ceasefire is reached. The phone call also addressed issues of mutual concern, including water security. Abdelatty conveyed Egypt's concerns regarding the Nile River and its water security, stressing Egypt's position that shared water resources must be governed by international law, and rejecting unilateral measures inconsistent with these rules. He underlined that Egypt will take all measures guaranteed under international law to safeguard its water security. On Iran's nuclear file, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of adhering to diplomatic paths and creating conditions conducive to resuming cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to build trust and promote regional stability. On international issues, Lavrov briefed Abdelatty on the outcomes of the recent US-Russia summit held in Alaska on August 15, noting its contribution to fostering a climate conducive to addressing the Ukraine crisis. Abdelatty, for his part, said Egypt is closely following developments of the summit, underscoring the importance of reaching a comprehensive political settlement and prioritizing diplomacy as the primary avenue to end conflicts.

US to Paint Mexico Border Wall Black to Deter Crossings
Israa Farhan The United States will paint its border wall with Mexico black at the request of President Donald Trump in a bid to make the structure more difficult to climb under intense heat. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the move during a visit to El Paso, noting that the darker surface will absorb more sunlight, increasing deterrence against illegal crossings. The wall, which already extends deep underground to prevent tunnelling, will be reinforced with additional security features. Recent congressional funding will support the continued pace of construction as well as the installation of advanced technology, including cameras, lighting systems, and ground sensors. Plans have also been announced for new waterborne infrastructure, though details remain unspecified. US Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks stated that the black paint will also help protect the structure from rust while enhancing its effectiveness as a barrier. The wall remains central to Trump's immigration agenda. Vice President J.D. Vance has confirmed that the project is scheduled for completion by the end of Trump's second presidential term in 2029. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid Videos & Features Story behind Trending Jessica Radcliffe Death Video News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt News The Jessica Radcliffe Orca Attack? 100% Fake and AI-Generated
