17 eminent personalities receive Loyola Alumni Award 2025 as part of centenary celebrations
Delivering the presidential address, Loyola Alumni Association president G. Viswanathan said, 'If you get a seat in Loyola, it is not an ordinary thing, because this can take you to any heights in life. For example, I came here as a boy from a village in 1957. As I studied in the Tamil medium, it was difficult for me (in Loyola). After four years, when I left Loyola, I was an orator. I was representing Loyola in intercollegiate debates. I follow the same discipline in VIT University that I was taught in Loyola College, and we are very successful. If at all, there is any credit, it should go to Loyola College.'
Loyola College Rector Rev. Fr. Antony Robinson presented the awards and pointed to the role played by Loyola College in educating the poor and marginalised students, so that they have a dignified life.

Wilson MP Rajya Sabha; Service Excellence Award - 2025 - S. Davidson Devasirvatham IPS, J. Muralidharan; Business Leader of the Year Award - 2025 - Sarath Reddy; Research Excellence Award - 2025 Dr. V. Mohan; Global Excellence Award - 2025, M. Raghuraman; Sporting Excellence Award – 2025 -Viswanathan Anand and Sharath Kamal; Creative Excellence Award - 2025 - Gayatri Pushkar, Vijay Antony and Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi; Friends of Loyola Award - G.K. Vasan MP (RS) and Reji Abraham.

Clarify land pooling policy: HC to Punjab
The Punjab government on Wednesday submitted in the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the recently introduced Land Pooling Policy, 2025, would be kept on hold till the next date of hearing, i.e. Thursday. The court was hearing a writ petition that challenged the Punjab government's land pooling policy introduced in June this year. The court asked the State government to clarify whether an Environmental Impact Assessment had been carried out before notifying the Land Pooling Policy, 2025. The court, in its interim order, directed the government to inform the court if there was any provision in the policy for the rehabilitation of the landless labourers and others who do not own any land but are dependent on the land for their sustenance. Petitioner Gurdeep Singh Gill had submitted that the policy was notified without carrying out the necessary environmental and social impact assessment, which is an essential prerequisite for the acquisition of land under Sections 4 to 8 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. The petitioner, a resident of Phagla village in Ludhiana district, owns 6 acres of land, which was allotted to his father as a displaced person in lieu of their land in Lyallpur district in Pakistan. The petitioner argued that they have invested and have made improvements to the land, which is now fertile but has been included in the policy. Mr. Gill also contended that there is no provision for providing compensation at the time of acquisition, and only an annual meagre livelihood allowance would be paid. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has hit out at the Opposition parties for spreading 'misleading propaganda' against the State government's policy, with party leaders describing it as 'farmer-friendly'. The Punjab Cabinet in June gave its nod to the policy and asserted that not a single yard will be forcibly acquired from the owners.

Banke Bihari temple: HC to hear the matter on Aug 26
Prayagraj: In the matter related to creating government trust to control and supervise Mathura's Banke Bihari temple through 'The Uttar Pradesh Shri Banke Bihari Ji Temple Trust Ordinance, 2025', the Allahabad high court has fixed August 26 for the next hearing. On Wednesday, when matter was taken up before the bench of Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal, the court was informed that the petition challenging the validity of Ordinance is pending before the Supreme Court. At this, the court adjourned the hearing and fixed August 26 for the next hearing. Though the hearing was adjourned, Justice Agrawal asked UP additional advocate general Manish Goyal that it would be proper to get the Ordinance amended for the part which calls for the inclusion of bureaucrats in the proposed trust. The court was of view that by way of the Ordinance in question, the government wants to put a control over the temple, which cannot be permitted as it is in violation of Article 25 of the Constitution. The court was of the view that the state can control external management, but it would not be proper to put an IAS officer in trust.

Now, pay more for affidavits; stamp duty rates revised
Bhopal: Agreements for leasing out property or affidavits from the notary for renewing firearms licence and other services is going to cost more. The Madhya Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday passed the Indian Stamp (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Bill, 2025 that proposes a steep hike in stamp duty for all judicial and non-judicial purposes. The passage of the bill is likely to help the state in mopping up an additional Rs 212 crore annually from the people. Opposition Congress MLAs strongly criticised the bill stating it would burden the common man. With the new Bill rates of affidavit, immovable property agreement, development, construction or bond agreements, consent deed, corrections in already registered documents, renewal of revolver and pistol licenses, partnership deed, power of attorney and for property of trusts the increase has been made from 100% to 400%. Allegations and counter allegations were witnessed between the govt and opposition during the debate on the bill with the opposition strongly demanding its withdrawal stating it will hit the ordinary man. The opposition alleged that the govt is taking frequent loans citing need for state's development, while on the other hand it is putting additional financial burden on the common man. Stamp duties for the rest remain unchanged, the fiancé minister stated. The govt cleared eight bills by the end of the day. The assembly was adjourned sine die on Wednesday evening, two days earlier from the schedule of the monsoon session that was till August 8. In his closing remark the leader of opposition, Umang Singhar urged the govt to increase the MLA constituency development fund to Rs 5 crore so that MLAs can carry out development works in their constituencies. Currently, the MLA fund in MP is Rs 2.5 cr. The CM assured the LoP that the govt would seriously consider the proposal.
