‘Respect Labuan sentiment on next top LC choice'

LABUAN: The Federal Territories Ministry should respect popular local sentiments and ensure that the vacant position of Chairman of Labuan Corporation is filled by a local as the past . 'Breaking this tradition will not go down well as a local will be more committed to serve the island and leave a legacy than an outsider who may hardly be around based on past experience. 'If this first choice is not available and if someone from outside is appointed he or she should be made to pledge full-time and take up residence on the island,' said activist George Elias. George was commenting on the response of FT Minister in the PM's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Zaliha Mustafa to Beaufort Member of Parliament Datuk Siti Aminah Aching. Siti Aminah had asked in the on-going session of parliament on the delay in the appointment of a Chairman and whether the residency status of a candidate was an issue. The post was last held by Tan Sri Anifah Aman from Sabah who was appointed to the office on a two-year term effective June 19 2023. In March he was also appointed Labuan Senator. His contributions to Labuan as chairman were questioned by some as more was expected of him as the post offered a good emolument and various perks. Anifah's appointment also sparked controversy with many quarters voicing concerns. Allegations emerged over his absence on the island, involvement in programmes and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce spoke of difficulty in meeting him. George hoped this would serve as a lesson and guidance in making a decision. Labuan folks do not want a let-down second time.' The Minister had said several candidates had been identified for the post and it was in the final phase of selection. She added that the post was important as the chairman played a key role in the strategic development developments (Hala Tuju) of the island and must have commitment to serve and address issues. She said as the person selected would be announced soon. Prior to Anifah all previous chairman of the post since 2001 had been local leaders and among them were Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (three terms) Datuk Rozman Isli, Datuk Bashir Alias and Datuk Amir Hussien. The minister said the residential qualification of the Chairman was not an issue as anyone from Sabah or else where could be selected based on merit. In the meantime the term of the seven-member Advisory Council has also expired. Ex-soldier loses appeal over dismissal for refusing Covid-19 jab
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today dismissed a former soldier's appeal against his termination from the Malaysian Armed Forces for refusing the Covid-19 vaccination. The three-member bench led by Justice Datuk Azimah Omar ruled that there was no illegality or procedural impropriety on the part of the respondents in dismissing Wan Ramli Wan Seman from service. "The court is of the view that the appeal is without merit and therefore, dismissed," she said. No order as to costs was made. Sitting with her were Justices Datuk Wong Kian Kheong and Datuk Ismail Brahim. Wan Ramli, 43, was appealing against the High Court's 2023 dismissal of his judicial review challenging the decision of the respondents. In his judicial review, Wan Ramli had named Lt-Col Sharull Hesham Md Yasin, Lt Mohamad Azammunir Mohd Ashri, Army Chief General Tan Sri Zamrose Mohd Zain, the Malaysian Armed Forces, and the Malaysian Government as respondents. He sought a certiorari order to quash the termination letter dated Aug 4, 2021, which discharged him from service, and a declaration that the discharge letter was null and void. He claimed that the dishonourable discharge had caused him to lose his right to a pension under Article 147 of the Federal Constitution. Wan Ramli also argued that his dismissal was invalid as it was disproportionate in the circumstances, oppressive, irrational, unreasonable, amounted to unlawful discrimination, and took into account irrelevant considerations. Then High Court judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid (now a Court of Appeal judge) had ruled that the decision to discharge Wan Ramli was lawful and not tainted with illegality, irrationality, or procedural impropriety. At today's hearing, Wan Ramli was represented by lawyer Hafiz Norkhan, while senior federal counsel Nurhafizza Azizan and federal counsel Solehheen Mohammad Zaki appeared for the respondents.

Malaysia, Brunei confident in Asean's role as model for peace
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Brunei have agreed that Asean, as an economic bloc, can continue to serve as a model region in promoting diplomacy and global peace. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was agreed upon during a brief telephone conversation with the Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, during a visit to the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta today. This comes following the immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreed upon yesterday in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. "We discussed Asean matters and efforts to reconcile Thailand and Cambodia, which yesterday agreed to an unconditional cessation of all forms of violence. "We are confident that Asean will continue to serve as a model region in upholding diplomacy and global peace," he said in a statement today. Cambodia and Thailand Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid their ongoing border conflict. The agreement was reached yesterday following a special meeting involving Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, with Anwar serving as host and Asean Chair.

Malaysia stays calm, committed to legal route on Sulawesi Sea dispute, Anwar says in Jakarta visit
JAKARTA, July 29 — Malaysia has never adopted an aggressive stance in addressing maritime border issues with Indonesia, including the long-standing dispute in the Sulawesi Sea, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. At a dialogue with the Association of Malaysian Indonesian Journalists (ISWAMI) and chief editors of major Indonesian media outlets here today, Anwar stressed that Malaysia remains committed to legal frameworks and diplomatic negotiations. 'We follow the legal path. We do not take an aggressive stance. Both sides must avoid encroaching into each other's territory,' he said. Anwar, currently on a working visit to Indonesia, is accompanied by federal and state leaders, including Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, whose presence, he said, is meant to facilitate discussions with Indonesia, particularly on matters involving East Malaysia. Also present at the meeting were ISWAMI Malaysia president Ashwad Ismail, ISWAMI Indonesia president Asro Kamal Rokan, ISWAMI Malaysia deputy president Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman, and Indonesia Chief Editors Forum (Forum Pemred) representative Taufiq Rahman. The dispute in the Sulawesi Sea involving overlapping maritime claims between East Kalimantan (Indonesia) and southeastern Sabah (Malaysia) has persisted since Malaysia published a map of its maritime boundaries in 1979. Tensions peaked in 2005, prompting the formation of ISWAMI, a bilateral media initiative composed of top editors from both nations, to help promote constructive narratives and reduce friction over sensitive bilateral issues. According to a written reply dated July 22 on the Malaysian Parliament portal, Malaysia's Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) maintains that the ND6 and ND7 oil exploration blocks in the Sulawesi Sea fall within Malaysian sovereign territory under international law.
