Flights canceled out of MHT amid tragedy in D.C.
Jan. 30—All American Airlines regional passenger jet flights between Reagan Washington National Airport and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport have been canceled into Friday morning after a plane collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter Wednesday night and crashed into the Potomac River.
American Airlines said 60 passengers and four crew members were aboard the Bombardier CRJ-700 aircraft between Wichita, Kansas, and D.C. The helicopter had three soldiers conducting a training exercise.
The plane was operated by PSA Airlines, which operates 500 daily flights for American Airlines, with regional flights out of MHT.
In all, Manchester saw five American Airlines arrivals and four departures to Reagan Washington National Airport canceled on Wednesday night into Thursday, according to FlightAware.com. One departure has been canceled for 5:36 a.m. Friday, according to the airport's schedule.
"MHT joins the entire aviation community in offering our deepest condolences to all those impacted by the tragic accident near Reagan National Airport last night," the airport posted on social media. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking loss. Our hearts and minds are with you all."
U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a New Hampshire Democrat who serves as a senior member on the Armed Services Committee, said she is monitoring the "horrible, tragic incident" outside the D.C. airport located in Arlington, Virginia.
"My thoughts are with the families of the passengers and crew of the flight as well as servicemembers in the Army helicopter. Thank you to the first responders for working through the night," she wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
An American flight from Reagan Washington National Airport is expected to land at MHT at 11:57 a.m. Friday.
Flights scheduled to depart at 12:23 p.m., 2:54 p.m. and 5:10 p.m. from MHT on Friday are still listed as "on time" on the website.
PSA Airlines operates the Canadair Regional Jet CRJ-700 out of Manchester. The plane can hold up to 78 passengers, but the number of seats depends on the layout.
A flight by the airline from Charlotte Douglas International Airport scheduled to land at 12:43 a.m. in Manchester was canceled. A flight returning to Charlotte at 5:34 a.m. was also canceled, according to the airport. Those are CRJ-900 planes.

Black boxes will give investigators more certainty of what happened on Air India flight, experts say
Investigators have recovered equipment from this week's tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, which could shed light on the final moments on the flight deck. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner's cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, which were recovered from on top of the medical college hostel building where the plane crashed, could put to rest some of the speculation into the investigation that killed 241 people aboard the aircraft, according to aviation industry experts. The flight data recorder was recovered from the rear end of the plane. The question will be whether the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators, India or another country will ingest the black boxes' data, according to Peter Goelz, former managing director of the NTSB and a CNN aviation analyst. 'It's quite dramatic,' Goelz said. 'It looked to me like the plane was trying to land at the end. It was flaring, but we just won't know until we get the boxes back.' The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of India is in possession of the recorders and other potential pieces of evidence for the investigation. The data recorders are expected to give some insight into what happened during the flight's final moments, when pilots were making critical decisions. Less than a minute after takeoff, staff on the plane gave a mayday call to air traffic control, Indian civil aviation authorities said. The deadly crash has drawn even more global attention to air safety and spurred on public anxieties about flying. There have already been several aviation tragedies and incidents this year — including January's midair collision between an Army Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet — that have prompted calls to increase safety measures. Boeing's 787-8 Dreamliner is highly regarded by many aviation experts for its reliability and engineering. In the last 14 years, the fleet has carried more than 1 billion total passengers, according to Boeing. 'It truly is an amazing airplane, and when they engineered it, it was completely off the normal production line of what Boeing usually creates,' said Erika Armstrong, a pilot and director of marketing at Advanced Aircrew Academy. For years, the company has drawn increasing scrutiny for crashes involving its planes, leading to the 20-month grounding of its MAX aircraft following two deadly crashes, quality concerns and financial woes. Golez said the tragedy 'couldn't happen at a worse time for Boeing,' which is part of the investigation along with GE Aerospace, the engine manufacturer for the plane. In the United States, the plane maker will be in the hot seat at the end of the month, when investigators are set to determine the probable cause of an in-flight separation of a mid-exit door plug on a Boeing 737-9 commercial plane near Portland, Oregon, last year. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg has also reportedly canceled plans to attend the Paris Air Show, a major aviation industry event where the company typically shows off its aircraft. 'This accident is a further challenge,' Goelz said. The Dreamliner is popular for international routes, with the 787-8 configuration fitting up to 248 passengers, according to Boeing. The NTSB told CNN on Friday that investigators expect to be in India within the next few days. Jeff Guzzetti, president of consulting firm Guzzetti Aviation Risk Discovery and former NTSB official, said these investigations typically hold an 'organizational meeting' where all of the technical experts will gather, recalling his own experience with accidents. 'They will form specialty groups' assigned to analyze different areas, such as the engines or the flight data recorder, he said. 'They'll put representatives from the different organizations on these groups, and they will begin to methodically document the wreckage and download the recorders.' The crash falls under the jurisdiction of the International Civil Aviation Organization, the United Nations agency that helps 193 countries work together in air travel. Guzzetti said the investigation is in its fact-finding phase, which includes wreckage clean up and interviews of those who trained the pilots. The captain and first officer's background will be looked at, he said, which could range from how much sleep they got to what their flight record was like. The black box recovery is critical, many experts say, at this point, because the technology will point to what pilots were saying before they made the mayday call. 'This will not be a mystery for more than another week or so if they got the data recorded, and the voice recorder will also explain what the pilots thought they were dealing with,' Goelz said. 'Pilots sometimes make mistakes, you don't know.'

30 Mass. National Guard troops with historic ties to Revolution marching in DC Army parade
WASHINGTON — Thirty National Guard soldiers from Massachusetts are in Washington this week, marching in Saturday's controversial — and costly — Army parade. They are members of the 1st Battalion, 182nd Infantry Regiment, headquartered at the Melrose Armory. They are part of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 42nd Infantry Division, headquartered in Syracuse, N.Y. 'As one of the four oldest units in the U.S. military, soldiers from the 1-182 Infantry were among the Massachusetts militia who first formed the ranks of the Continental Army on Cambridge Common in 1775,' said Lt. Col. Landon Mavrelis, commander, 1st Battalion, 182nd Infantry Regiment, in a statement. The 42nd 'Rainbow' Division is one of the eight Army National Guard divisions in the parade, said Eric Durr, spokesman for the New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs. Eleven of the Army's 19 divisions are participating. The 42nd was created during World War I by taking National Guard units from 26 states and creating a special division that could go quickly to France in the fall of 1917. The division was organized in Garden City, Long Island, and was nicknamed 'The Rainbow Division.' The division's first chief of staff, Douglas MacArthur — who later commanded American forces in World War II — said the division would 'stretch across the country like a rainbow.' 'The legacy forged by Rainbow Division soldiers on battlefields across France marked the 42d ID as one of the premier divisions of the American Expeditionary Force. We are honored to represent our predecessors, and all brave Americans who fought in that conflict 100 years ago,' said Major Gen. Jack James, the commander of the 42nd Infantry Division. James will lead the contingent along with a color guard. Another 30 soldiers from the 42nd Infantry Division Band, headquartered at the Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill, New York, also will march. The parade officially commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Army's founding in 1775. But the date Saturday also coincides with President Donald Trump's birthday, raising questions about the appropriateness of soldiers participating in what could be a political event. The parade is expected to cost $45 million. The Massachusetts soldiers left for Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and will return Sunday, according to the New York Guard. According to a statement from New York State, soldiers will be housed in an empty Department of Agriculture office building and an unused General Services Administration warehouse, just as they were for the inauguration. The soldiers will receive meals ready-to-eat, or MREs, for breakfast and lunch, and a hot meal for dinner along with per-diem of about $69. The cost is being picked up by the Army.
