Gift of the Givers calls for arrest of ‘water mafia' after threats in flood-ravaged Mthatha
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu previously condemned the threats, and authorities are providing armed protection for aid workers.
The humanitarian organisation called for the arrest of those responsible.
Gift of the Givers Foundation founder Imtiaz Sooliman has called for the arrest of the 'water mafia' after aid workers were threatened while distributing water to flood-ravaged residents in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
The person who made the threats, he said, was driving a black Toyota Fortuner at the time.
His call came days after Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and the OR Tambo District Municipality condemned the intimidation of the workers.
The municipality has contracts with companies that own water tankers and distribute water to people during outages.
Gift of the Givers has been distributing the water for free ever since the floods hit the Eastern Cape, claiming the lives of at least 92 people, most of them in Mthatha.
Sooliman said information indicated that someone driving a black Toyota Fortuner had made the threats.
'Gift of the Givers appreciates the message of support from the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, against the water mafia who tried to intimidate Gift of the Givers drivers while delivering life-saving water to the people of Mthatha, who were severely affected by the floods,' he added.

'Given the hardship and difficulty of the people and given the fact that [over] 90 people have passed on, the behaviour of the water mafia is totally disgusting. We appreciate the fact that the SAPS acted immediately by sending an armed person in the truck with our drivers, as well as a car following the water tankers.
'The situation has completely calmed down, but we are calling on the community of Mthatha to help us find a black Toyota Fortuner from which the threat was made, and we need that person arrested,' he said
Sooliman added that profiteering from people's hardship needed to stop:
This is a message to the water mafia: we will take you on wherever you are because Gift of the Givers is not afraid of anyone.
'We have the support of the government, the SAPS, the SANDF, and above all, we have the support of the communities and the municipalities when it comes to assisting people in dire need, as is the case now in Mthatha and the Eastern Cape.
'This kind of heinous behaviour has to stop. We hope that the government will now extend the support it is giving to Gift of the Givers to all areas where the water mafia are capitalising. All those types of tenders have to stop in the interest of saving money and in the interest of the people of our country,' he said.
On Wednesday, Mchunu said the police would not tolerate any attempt to intimidate or obstruct those working tirelessly to save lives and bring relief to the people.
'Gift of the Givers has consistently been a source of hope and dignity to South Africans in their hour of need. Any attack on them is an attack on the very principle of ubuntu,' the minister said.

Muizenberg residents living in fear after 3 killed following gangster's prison release
Three people were killed and one injured following a shooting incident in Muizenberg on Saturday night. It's alleged that the shooting may be linked to the release of a notorious gang member from jail. Policing in the area has been intensified to prevent any further violence. Muizenberg residents are living in fear after three people were shot and killed, while another was injured in a shooting on Saturday night. The bodies of the two women and a man, aged between 29 and 32, were found at Mike Place, Xakabantu, in Muizenberg at around 23:30. The fourth victim survived after he sustained a gunshot wound and managed to escape. He was rushed to hospital. According to police spokesperson, Colonel Andre Traut, the suspects fled the scene and have yet to be arrested. He said police had launched an investigation into the shooting. He said that policing in the area had been intensified to prevent any further violence. Ward 45 councillor Mandy Marr claimed that the shooting was linked to the release of a notorious gang member from prison. 'We were on a good trajectory in fighting crime in the community,' Marr told News24. 'It's been a peaceful two months without any shooting incidents, and now, following the release of this parolee, the community is faced with such a horrific incident.' Marr said the shooting seems to be targeted, as the three people who were killed were also members of the Junky Funky Kids gang. However, the fourth person, who sustained a gunshot wound, was an innocent bystander. She added that following the shooting, residents no longer feel safe in their own community. 'This is a moment of deep sadness for all of us in Overcome Heights, Seawinds, Vrygrond, and Xakabantu. We all deserve to feel safe in our own neighbourhoods.' Community leader Mike Khumalo said that all four victims were part of the community patrol. 'When people volunteer that they want to be the eyes and ears of the community, it's not our job to judge them, and ask if they are part of a gang or not. They were in uniform, and they had been part of the community patrol for quite some time now,' he said. Khumalo added that it is possible that the shooting may be related to the release of the parolee. He said that the decrease in crime in the area can be attributed to the initiatives that his team has introduced to the community, in fighting crime.

'The hostages are my top priority': IDF officer on balancing aid distribution, freeing hostages
M., a mother of four and wife to a hi-tech professional, described her mission in five words: 'returning the hostages and denying Hamas aid." 'As a uniformed officer, my role is first and foremost to protect the State of Israel and everyone who lives here,' Lt.-Col. M., 42, head of the Foreign Relations Department in the Coordination and Liaison Directorate (CLD) for Gaza, told Walla in an interview. Since December 2024, she has overseen the coordination of humanitarian aid activity in the Gaza Strip with dozens of international organizations. M., a mother of four and wife to a hi-tech professional, described her mission: 'returning the hostages and denying Hamas aid." 'Most of our work involves coordinating humanitarian efforts with actors inside and outside the Gaza Strip,' she explained. 'We bring in humanitarian aid, and we also coordinate the evacuation of patients and the safe transfer of foreign nationals.' Her role extends far beyond supervising aid trucks. 'There's coordination that is not necessarily food—such as medical equipment, blood units, and more. On the one hand, we are fighting, and at the same time, medical teams or humanitarian convoys must move during or near combat zones. These are two parallel efforts that must be synchronized.' M. noted that the looting of aid is routine. 'Most of the trucks are looted along the way. We see it. Aid from these trucks, with international logos, is sold in the markets. You can even see its impact on prices—for example, flour prices have dropped.' She has also had to address complex incidents, including the deaths of World Central Kitchen (WCK) staff in an Israeli strike. 'After every incident, we stop, investigate, study what happened, and try to understand why. Gaza is a war zone. It's not a sterile area.' Returning the hostages M. was directly involved in Operation 'Derech Eretz,' which saw hostages returned and Palestinian prisoners released. 'The truth is, Operation 'Derech Eretz' shook me the most,' she recalled. 'To see the coffins of our hostages—it's to hurt, to cry on what happened to us as a people, a nation, an army on October 7. And a minute later, you have to pull yourself together, remember you're on an operational mission, and continue.' 'The hostages are my top priority,' M. stressed. 'Even if some of the aid we bring in reaches them and keeps them alive one more day, I've earned my bread. This is my life's mission.' Despite the strain, she insisted her fight is not against the civilians of Gaza but against Hamas. 'I will do everything to prevent Hamas from accessing humanitarian aid. And I live with the hope that at any moment, I will get the call: prepare for another hostage return.' Solve the daily Crossword
