Inside Ilia Topuria's heavy UFC 317 gamble: ‘That's a lot of meat'
For Ilia Topuria, it's on to bigger and better things at UFC 317.
Oh, and it's on to more enjoyable things as well, now that the undefeated former featherweight champion is gunning for a second UFC title on Saturday in Las Vegas when he takes on ex-lightweight champ Charles Oliveira for the vacant 155-pound strap.
'I feel much, much better,' said Topuria, speaking with The Post recently via video call. 'That 10 pounds makes the difference; trust me. Just imagine 10 pounds of meat on the table; that's a lot of meat.'
Really, though, Topuria (16-0, 14 finishes) was sapping his body of 10 extra pounds of water to reach the 145-pound limit for each of his championship fights — a pair of victories over divisional legends Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway that earned him 2024 fighter of the year recognition.

Jailton Almeida Calls Out Tom Aspinall for UFC Heavyweight Title Fight
Jailton Almeida Calls Out Tom Aspinall for UFC Heavyweight Title Fight originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The UFC heavyweight division is finally showing signs of life. With Jon Jones reportedly stepping away from the sport, a long-stalled weight class is beginning to churn forward. Title hopefuls are lining up—and many are drooling at the chance to seize the throne. The belt is active, the king is crowned, and the contenders smell blood. One Brazilian wrecking ball isn't waiting around for a phone call. Advertisement That man is Jailton Almeida. The 33-year-old Brazilian from Salvador has quietly become one of the most avoided problems in the UFC—just ask anyone who's had to peel him off their back. After Tom Aspinall was formally recognized as the undisputed champion, Almeida fired off a raw and direct challenge on social media: Congrats champ. You deserve that. Now, let's make the only fight who make sense! Aspinall vs Almeida for undisputed HW title of the world. Gane ducks you and me before, already fought for the belt and lost 2-times, and his last win was a robbery. Tom AspinallGetty Images No fluff. No filters. Just pressure. Almeida is 9-1 in the UFC and currently riding a two-fight win streak. His most recent outing ended with Sergei Spivac flat on the canvas in Round 1 at UFC 311. His only loss came against Curtis Blaydes, but it hasn't slowed the narrative that he's a stylistic nightmare. Advertisement Almeida has finished eight of his nine UFC wins—most of them by submission or ground-and-pound. His ability to drag elite fighters into his world and end fights without absorbing much damage has become his calling card—and part of why many believe top contenders are hesitant to take the risk. Now, with the Jon Jones era all but closed, Almeida wants in. He's not asking. He's demanding. The question is whether Dana White and company are ready to let the grappling juggernaut off the leash. The window is open, and the call has been made. Now it's on the UFC to answer. Cheyanne Vlismas Says Goodbye to UFC After 7-3 Career
Cheyanne Vlismas Says Goodbye to UFC After 7-3 Career originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Staying relevant in the UFC is a challenge few openly talk about. It's more than just wins and losses—it's about timing, consistency, and life outside the cage. For some, real life eventually calls louder than the roar of the Octagon. A veteran appears to be facing that very fork in the road. Advertisement Cheyanne Vlismas, also known as the 'Warrior Princess,' has officially announced her retirement from the UFC at just 29 years old. In an emotional Instagram post, Vlismas opened up about why she's stepping away from fighting: UFC CEO Dana WhitePhoto by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC 'This decision comes with a lot of heartbreak. But this is something that I need to do... After having my second child, my time is very limited. I am unable to give 100% into my training without giving less of myself to my babies... I'm choosing to be the parent I wish I always had.' Cheyanne VlismasGetty Images Vlismas retires with a professional record of 7-3, including a 3-2 stint in the UFC. After debuting in March 2021 with a loss to Montserrat Ruiz, she quickly rebounded with impressive wins over Gloria de Paula and Mallory Martin. Her last UFC appearance was a December 2022 decision loss to Cory McKenna. Her most memorable moment came after her 22-second TKO over de Paula. In a post-fight interview captured by MMA Junkie, she was visibly emotional and revealed: 'I am negative in my account right now… I've been so broke my whole life because of this sport.' Advertisement The performance earned her a $50,000 bonus from Dana White and the UFC—a high point in a career built on heart and grit. While she didn't fulfill every dream inside the cage, Vlismas leaves behind a legacy of resilience—and steps fully into the role she values most: mother.
