Motorist claims trial to driving against traffic flow
JOHOR BARU: A 26-year-old food seller has been charged at the Magistrate's Court here with driving recklessly against the flow of traffic.
S. Thaanesh pleaded not guilty to the charge of driving a car recklessly against traffic along KM4 Jalan Gelang Patah-Ulu Choh here at around 9am on May 9.
The offence was framed under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, punishable with a sentence of five to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000 upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Amirah Tasnim Saleh offered bail at RM15,000 with one surety and asked for additional conditions on Thaanesh such as reporting to the police station monthly, surrendering his passport to the court and suspension of his driving licence.
Thaanesh's lawyer S. Selvanteran asked for lower bail, saying that the accused has to care for his mother, a single parent who had suffered a stroke and has heart problems.
Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid allowed bail at RM6,000 with one surety and imposed the additional conditions requested by the DPP.
The court also set June 20 for next mention and submission of documents.
Previously, a video of a red car wedged between two lorries made the rounds on social media.
Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan reportedly said the 26-year-old driver was believed to have entered the wrong lane while on his way to a petrol station nearby.
He added that the driver had driven against traffic for 500m before getting trapped between the two heavy vehicles.

Civil servant loses RM13,000 to scammers
KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant lost RM13,000 in savings after he was believed to have been scammed by imposters. The victim, who is in his 30s, was said to have received a call from someone claiming to be an official from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and later, a policeman for spreading fake news on investments, job offers and gambling. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the victim allegedly got the calls on May 27, first from someone claiming to be an MCMC officer. 'The caller claimed that his (victim) phone number was involved in the dissemination of fake messages, and then the call was allegedly reconnected to another individual who claimed to be a policeman from the Perak police headquarters,' he said. After speaking for quite some time, the man was ordered to transfer RM13,000 to a bank account belonging to one Muhammad Azlan, for 'account protection', he said. Supt Mursalin said the victim was also instructed to update photos and personal details every three hours to the 'cop' as a way of reporting himself to the police. 'Later, the victim realised that he had been cheated and lodged a report at the Ranau police station on Tuesday night,' he said. Supt Mursalin said this case is now being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. He urged the public to keep calm and think rationally when receiving such calls from unknown persons or numbers to avoid getting scammed. He also warned against revealing any personal, banking or identification information through the phone, and to not carry out any monetary transactions online or via telephone. 'Always call back the police station or agencies allegedly involved on their official land-lines to verify any calls or matters,' said Supt Mursalin.

Officer charged over RM19,100 false claim
KOTA KINABALU: A 46-year-old town planning officer pleaded not guilty to a charge of submitting a false claim amounting to RM19,100 for services that were allegedly never rendered. Nazri Hamburg, an officer with the state Town and Country Planning Department, is charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. According to the charge, Nazri is accused of knowingly submitting a false document, a claim form dated June 12, 2017, to a finance administrative assistant in his department. The claim allegedly included a bill, No. 171021 dated May 12, 2017, for the delivery of a Proton Saga BLM and a Toyota Hilux Vigo to Papar, along with manpower for moving goods, which totalled RM19,100. If convicted, Nazri faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of not less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher, under Section 24(2) of the same Act. Sessions judge Jason Juga, sitting in the Special Corruption Court here, allowed bail at RM10,000, with RM5,000 to be deposited and the remaining RM5,000 without deposit. One local surety was required. Nazri was also ordered to report to the MACC office every two months pending the disposal of the case. The case will be mentioned again on July 10.

Man arrested for alleged sex assault on teen girl
KOTA KINABALU: An man was arrested for suspected sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl at an estate in Lahad Datu. Lahad Datu deputy OCPD Supt Jimmy Panyau said the 62-year-old suspect was said to have been in a compromising position with the girl at about 8am on Tuesday. He said the victim claimed to have fainted behind her house prior to the incident. 'The girl claimed that when she started to gain consciousness, the suspect whom she recognised was on top of her,' he said. Supt Jimmy said the suspect fled when he saw that the girl had woken up. The girl then told her aunt and a police report was lodged. Supt Jimmy said the suspect was arrested and is being investigated under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. 'The victim has been sent for a medical examination to facilitate investigation,' he added.
