World's oldest marathon runner, 114, killed by car

The Advertiser6 days ago
Fauja Singh, an Indian-born runner nicknamed the Turbaned Torpedo who was believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, has died after being hit by a car. He was 114.
Indian media reported Singh sustained severe head injuries in a hit-and-run accident on Monday while crossing the road at his native village near Jalandhar in Punjab.
He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
India's Prime minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Singh, saying he was "extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness".
Singh became the oldest man to run a full marathon in 2011 at the age of 100 in Toronto, but his accomplishment was not recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records because he did not have a birth certificate to prove his age.
Singh had a British passport that showed his date of birth as April 1, 1911, while a letter from Indian government officials stated that birth records were not kept in 1911.
A torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics, Singh took up running at the age of 89 as a way to overcome depression after his wife and son died in quick succession in India.
He went to live with his youngest son in London, where he attended sporting events organised by the Sikh community and took part in sprints, before being convinced by Sikh marathon runners to take up that pursuit.
At the age of 89 in 2000 he ran the London Marathon, his first, and went on to complete eight more.
Singh ran his last competitive race in 2013 at the age of 101, finishing the Hong Kong Marathon's 10km race in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 28 seconds.

US President Donald Trump demands Washington Commanders NFL franchise and Cleveland Guardians MLB team change back to controversial names

US President Donald Trump wants two major sports team to revert to their controversial former names. Washington's National Football League (NFL) franchise and Cleveland's Major League Baseball (MLB) team have had their current names since the 2022 seasons. The now Washington Commanders were previously known as the Washington Redskins. The franchise dropped Redskins after the 2019 season and was known as the Washington Football Team for two years before moving to its current name. The now Cleveland Guardians were previously known as the Cleveland Indians. The team announced in December 2020 it would drop Indians, later announced its switch to Guardians in July 2021. In 2018, the team phased out 'Chief Wahoo' as its primary logo. The name changes had their share of supporters and critics as part of national discussions about institutions and teams dropping logos and names considered racist. Trump said Sunday on his Truth Social site that 'The Washington 'Whatever's' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team'. 'There is a big clamouring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. 'Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. 'Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!' Josh Harris, whose group bought the Commanders from former owner Dan Snyder in 2023, said earlier this year the name was here to stay. Not long after taking over, Harris quieted speculation about going back to Redskins, saying that would not happen. Guardians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti indicated before Sunday's game against the Athletics that there weren't any plans to revisit the name change. 'We understand there are different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago, but obviously it's a decision we made. We've got the opportunity to build a brand as the Guardians over the last four years and are excited about the future that's in front of us,' he said. Trump later said he would consider blocking the Commanders' from building a new stadium in Washington if they did not change names. The Guardians are the fifth name for Cleveland's baseball franchise. It joined the American League in 1901 as one of the eight charter franchises as the Blues. It switched to the Bronchos a year later and used the Naps from 1903 through 1914 before moving to the Indians in 1915. Washington started in Boston as the Redskins in 1933 before moving to the nation's capital four years later. Washington and Cleveland share another thing in common. David Blitzer is a member of Harris' ownership group with the Commanders and holds a minority stake in the Guardians.

‘Forged' and ‘fake': PNG sport, business supremo hits out at corruption concerns

The oil and gas boss who led Papua New Guinea's bid for a National Rugby League franchise has blasted corruption concerns about his business dealings as 'baseless claims' designed to discredit the country's historic admission to the Australian competition. Wapu Sonk on Friday stepped down as a director from the incoming team's board at the request of PNG Prime Minister James Marape, after this masthead uncovered suspect dealings between the Sonk-led Kumul Petroleum Holdings and a Chinese government-controlled entity over the upgrade of a PNG port. Marape said at the weekend that he ordered an investigation after a letter emerged from March this year from Australian-born Kumul Petroleum project manager Jason Pollock to the Chinese company directing it to use companies owned by Pollock and Sonk. Sonk is managing director of Kumul Petroleum, PNG's state-owned energy business and the country's largest company. He declined to answer questions put to him last week by this masthead, but in a statement issued on Monday night, he described the letter as 'fabricated'. 'These claims are based on false information and the matter is being investigated internally within KPHL and will be referred to the police for investigation,' Sonk said. 'I will ensure all these baseless claims are properly addressed, and that those who falsified documents are properly dealt with through legal channels.' Sonk said he had stood down from the board of the Albanese government-backed PNG NRL team 'to ensure there is no hindrance in progressing our new NRL franchise team forward' and that he would pursue defamation action in Australia to clear his name.
