Week of May 26 Evening News Ratings: All 3 Newscasts Struggle For Viewers Post-Memorial Day

The week after the Memorial Day holiday weekend proved slow for the evening newscasts as all three failed to make week-to-week gains in total viewers or the Adults 25-54 demo. NBC Nightly News was the only newscast not to record declines across the board for the week of May 26, as enough of an audience tuned in for Lester Holt's final broadcast as anchor to keep it from falling into the negative zone with total viewers. Holt has something else to smile about: His final week in the anchor's chair brought the demo gap between Nightly News and ABC World News Tonight with David Muir to just 53,000 viewers-its closest finish since January. Note: The weekly averages of ABC News, NBC News, and CBS News are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday). Monday's (05/26/25) broadcasts were retitled due to the Memorial Day holiday. These broadcasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, WNT averaged 7.042 million total viewers and 884,000 demo viewers for respective drops of -2% and -9% compared to the previous week. Looking at its performance alongside the same week in 2024 (the week beginning May 27), WNT was down -3% in total viewers and -14% in the demo. NBC Nightly News finished second in total viewers and the demo, averaging 5.720 million total viewers and 831,000 demo viewers. Week-to-week, the newscast was flat in the former category and dipped -5% in the latter. Year-to-year, Nightly News was up +2% in total viewers and +4% in the demo-the only newscast with gains relative to the same week in 2024. CBS Evening News drew 3.600 million total viewers and 490,000 A25-54 viewers for declines of -8% in the former category and -12% in the latter. Year-to-year, the newscast declined -15% in total viewers and -24% in the demo. Most Current Data Stream: 2024-2025 Season (9/23/24 – 6/1/25) and 2023-2024 Season (9/25/23 – 6/2/24). Nielsen ratings for ABC, NBC and CBS include additional airings in select markets. Beginning 8/31/20, national ratings also include Out of Home (OOH) viewing. Averages based on regular telecasts.

Musk calls out media hypocrisy over Booker ‘Nazi salute' hand gesture

(WTVO) — Elon Musk has called out 'legacy media' for hypocrisy over how news agencies covered Sen. Cory Booker's (D-N.J.) arm gesture after the tech billionaire faced a firestorm over a similar gesture earlier this year. While speaking at the California Democratic Convention on Saturday, Booker put his hand on his heart and then extended his arm toward the crowd. , with users placing it side-by-side with a nearly identical gesture made by Elon Musk on President Donald Trump's inauguration day. Musk's gesture sparked headlines and controversy over whether the Tesla CEO was giving a Nazi salute. 'Legacy media lies,' Musk in a comment to a user's tweet on X, comparing news coverage of Booker's gesture to his own. He also posted between Newsweek headlines on both incidents, with one reading '80 Years After Auschwitz, Elon Musk Keeps the Facist Salute Alive' and the other 'MAGA Accuses Democratic Senator Cory Booker of Doing 'Nazi Salute'.' 'Fate loves irony, but hates hypocrisy,' Musk wrote. At the time, Musk claimed the media misrepresented his gesture, which he said was intended to be a symbol of love. 'My heart goes out to you,' Musk said after making the gesture. 'And it's thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured.' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came to Musk's defense, '@elonmusk is being falsely smeared. Elon is a great friend of Israel. He visited Israel after the October 7 massacre in which Hamas terrorists committed the worst atrocity against the Jewish people since the Holocaust.' The Anti-Defamation League also opined, 'It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.' Maya Krishna-Rogers, deputy communications director for Booker, denied the Senator had made a 'Nazi salute.' 'Cory Booker was obviously just waving to the crowd. Anyone who claims his wave is the same as Elon Musk's gesture is operating in bad faith. The differences between the two are obvious to anyone without an agenda,' she said. Week of May 26 Morning News Ratings: GMA and CBS Mornings Gain Demo Viewers After Memorial Day

The short week that followed the Memorial Day holiday saw all three morning shows experience declines in total viewers. However, ABC News' Good Morning America and CBS News' CBS Mornings posted week-to-week gains in the advertiser-coveted demo of Adults 25-54 for the week of May 26. It may be a post-holiday hiccup, but NBC News' Today showed some vulnerability in its longtime first-place demo position as the gap between it and GMA was less than 100,000 A25-54 viewers. NOTE: GMA, Today, and CBS Mornings were coded as specials on Monday (05/6/25) due to the Memorial Day holiday. These specialed telecasts are excluded from the weekly and season averages. The morning shows' weekly averages are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday). According to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, GMA averaged 2.629 million total viewers and 466,000 A25-54 viewers. Compared to the previous week, ABC News' morning show was down -1% in the former category, but up +3% in the latter. Looking at its performance alongside the same week in 2024 (the week of May 27), GMA was down -7% in total viewers and -1% in the demo. Today landed in second place in total viewers, but remained No. 1 in the demo with 2.558 million and 542,000 viewers, respectively. Week-to-week, the morning show saw a -1% decrease in the former category and a double-digit dip of -10% in the latter. Year-to-year, Today was down -2% in total viewers and -3% in the demo. CBS Mornings saw 1.823 million total viewers and 342,000 demo viewers for a decline of -9% in the former category, and a +9% gain in the demo. Year-to-year, the morning show sustained an -11% decline in total viewers and a -13% decline in the demo.
