Visakhapatnam: The cashew trade in the Palasa region of Srikakulam district is facing a significant challenge due to low profit margins as prices have dipped significantly in the national market. Traders say prices of cashew kernels have dropped by Rs 100 to Rs 120 per kg in the past two months and this has led to decline in supply by around 30 to 40 percent. In the Palasa and Kasibugga localities of Srikakulam district, there are over 300 cashew processing units and all these units together produce around 60,000 kg cashew nuts per day. These units require at least 80,000 to 1 lakh tonnes of raw cashew per year. Cashew kernels from Palasa and the Vetapalem variety from Prakasam district are renowned for their rich taste. Usually, demand for Palasa cashews goes up before Raksha Bandhan and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals. "For the first time in the past few decades we are experiencing a diverse market trend in cashew trade," said Malla Rameswara Rao, president of industrial estate and owner of a cashew processing unit in Palasa.
