‘Sign here for opening fixed deposits': How Bengaluru postal assistant duped customers of nearly Rs 12 lakh
A postal assistant in Bengaluru allegedly swindled Rs 11.8 lakh from the accounts of five customers after obtaining their signatures on the pretext of opening fixed deposits.
Pavithra H L, who has been working at the Banashankari Stage 3 post office since April 2021, allegedly committed the fraud between January 17 and June 11, 2024. The postal authority's preliminary inquiry recently concluded, confirming Pavithra's guilt, leading to her transfer to another branch.
Pavithra allegedly exploited customers' trust and obtained their signatures on withdrawal forms under the guise of opening fixed deposits or investing under Central government schemes, such as the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana. She made several unauthorised withdrawals from the victims' post office savings accounts for personal use, said the police.
The alleged fraud came to light when a customer, Mehak Arbina from Umarbagh Layout, discovered that money had been missing from her account and raised the alarm. The other victims are Jayamma N from Obalappa Garden, Tata Silk Farm, C R Rashmi from Banashankari Stage 3, S Nagaraju from Gowdanapalya, and Rathnamma from K R Road.
The assistant superintendent of the postal branch filed a police complaint on June 21, though there was a delay in approaching authorities due to account verification processes.
The Banashankari police filed an FIR in June under sections 408 (criminal breach of trust by a clerk or servant), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant, banker, merchant, or agent), 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 417 (cheating), 418 (cheating with the knowledge that wrongful loss may ensue to a person whose interest the offender is bound to protect) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The police said they will issue a notice to Pavithra at the earliest as the investigation proceeds.

Wanaparthy police arrest constable-turned-builder on loan fraud charge
A police constable-turned-builder accused of duping his own department's Bharatha scheme and multiple banks to the tune of Rs. 2.61 crore was arrested by the Wanaparthy police on Tuesday. The 37-year-old accused Bandaru Rakesh, who joined back to duty after a long leave of nearly nine years, fabricated documents to secure multiple loans from three houses, Wanaparthy Superintendent of Police Ravula Giridhar said at a press conference. He got selected as Armed Reserve constable in 2007 and got converted his service into Civil a couple of years later. Using the connection while serving as a civil constable, he entered real estate business and created his own venture of houses. He first sold one of the houses in his venture to his aide Sunkari Shekhar. He created fake documents stating that he had purchased the house from Shekhar and availed home loan from police department's Bhadratha scheme. 'Using the same details, he fabricated documents and secured home loans from Indian Overseas Bank, HDFC and LIC,' the SP said. With this modus operandi, he collected Rs. 89 lakh in the form of multiple bank loans. In the same fashion, he availed multiple home loans from different banks. The accused spent most of the money he had earned for his lavish lifestyle and ended up behind the bars, Mr. Giridhar said.

Man sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for setting nephew ablaze
The Thiruvananthapuram Additional Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced a 63-year-old man to 20 years and seven months of rigorous imprisonment for setting his 11-year-old nephew ablaze over a false accusation of theft in 2014. Additional Sessions Judge Shibu M.P. who found the accused, George Titus of Kulathoor, guilty of the crime also slapped a fine of ₹1,55,500. He was found guilty for crimes under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid, etc), 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code, and provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2020. According to the prosecution led by Special Public Prosecutor Ajith Prasad J.K., the incident occurred on May 22, 2014 under the Pozhiyoor police station limits. Hands tied George, a cousin of the survivor's mother, falsely accused the then Class VI student of stealing money from a neighbour. He then tied the hands of the child, dragged him to the kitchen, poured kerosene on him, and set him on fire. The child sustained grievous burns and was hospitalised for several months during which he underwent multiple surgeries. The court observed that the assault resulted in permanent disfigurement and disability for the child. The survivor, now a young adult, suffers from fused fingers, arms fused to the shoulders, and neck fused to the chest, rendering him unable to lift his head. Considering the brutality of the act and the lifelong suffering inflicted upon the survivor, the court ruled that the convict did not deserve any leniency in sentencing. The prosecution presented 12 witnesses and produced 18 exhibits.

Fact Check: These sadhus were NOT attacked for hiding cameras in a temple changing room
A video of a mob attacking a group of Hindu holy men is making the rounds on social media. Those sharing the clip claimed that in Ghaziabad, devotees found a camera planted by temple caretaker (mahant) Mukesh Goswami in a women's changing room there. Locals and the police subsequently beat up sadhus from the temple. Sharing the clip on X, one person wrote, 'The biggest news of the day. In Muradnagar, Ganga Nahar of Ghaziabad district, Uttar Pradesh, a camera was found in the changing room outside a temple, and its live feed was on Mahant Mukesh Goswami's mobile. Videos of women changing clothes were found on Mahant's mobile.
