Bok legend Jaque Fourie wants Lions to keep their players as URC ambitions flounder

The sands of time have just about run out for the Lions in the United Rugby Championship's 'Race to Eight', and defence coach Jaque Fourie is concerned that the team are leaking star players such as Edwill van der Merwe, who will join the Sharks next season.
The Johannesburg side host the Scarlets at Ellis Park on Sunday (3pm kick-off), and finish their URC league campaign the following week with a home fixture against the Ospreys.
The Lions need the maximum 10 points from these last two games to have a mathematical chance of making the playoffs, but they are hanging on to a slender straw.
The highest points tally the Lions can hope for on the final log is 45, and no side has ever qualified for the URC playoffs with that tally.
Fourie, a Springbok legend as a feisty outside centre, is worried about his team going forward.
The latest Lions export to the Sharks is flying winger Van der Merwe, and Fourie is not happy that the talented back has chosen not to stay in Johannesburg.
This has also been the case with other Durban-bound Lions stars in brothers Vincent and Emmanuel Tshituka, flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse and prop Ruan Dreyer.
'We have to try to keep our talent here and ensure that all the players in the group improve,' Fourie said ahead of Sunday's match.

'It was difficult to lose experienced senior men such as Willem Alberts and Jaco Kriel in the past few seasons, and now Edwill.
'The Lions must retain the right group of players for the next few seasons, to some extent, as happened in 2013,' said Fourie.
The Bok great is referring to the era when the Lions built a brilliant team under coaches Johan Ackerman and Swys de Bruin and won their way to three Super Rugby finals. This was between 2016 and 2018.
'There are a few young players like flank Renzo du Plessis, who have come to the fore this season. Hopefully we can produce a few more Springboks in the next two, three seasons, but we must keep them,' Fourie told Netwerk24.
The Lions are struggling in 13th position on the log, and while the game is surely up in terms of the playoffs, Fourie says the team must soldier on.
'There were some really good performances, and then games that we didn't expect to lose,' he said.
'There were three or four games that we should have won. Then our position on the points table would have looked much better.
'We would love to have been in a position at this stage of the season where we have a good chance of qualifying. Instead, we just have to win and hope.'

Salmaan Moerat set to miss Springboks' matches as Western Province sweat over Zain Davids
While Western Province are still sweating over the fitness of captain and flanker Zain Davids ahead of their match against the Cheetahs, it also looks like they will be without Springbok Salmaan Moerat for the remainder of the Currie Cup. On Monday, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus revealed that Moerat was set to make his first appearance for Western Province in the Currie Cup this weekend in Bloemfontein. However, the Bok lock suffered a knee injury at training and is now doubtful for the rest of Province's domestic campaign, as well as the Springboks' Rugby Championship matches. Moerat is one of a handful of Springboks outside the current squad who were sent back to their unions to get some game time in the Currie Cup. But Erasmus let slip that Moerat is currently sidelined. 'We've cut the squad a little bit, but when we have meetings, we've still got guys like Jaden [Hendrikse], Faf [de Klerk], Mapiemps (Makazole Mapimpi) joining virtually. Salmaan, unfortunately, got injured last week. He would have played this week [for Western Province in the Currie Cup],' said Erasmus.

Springboks' old 'friend' to referee Test against Wallabies
As the Springboks get set to kick off their Rugby Championship campaign, they will be very familiar with New Zealand referee Ben O'Keeffe, who will take charge of proceedings out in the middle. O'Keeffe refereed the second Test between the Springboks and British & Irish Lions in 2021, when he was largely praised for the manner in which he handled the game after a highly controversial opening encounter. The New Zealander also took charge of the Springboks' 2023 World Cup quarter-final against France, when some critics suggested his calls went in favour of South Africa. However, he was confidently backed by World Rugby at the time, and took charge of the Springboks' victorious semi-final against England a week later. Known for his clear communication and calm demeanour, the Springboks will welcome the referee selected for their tournament opener. Wallabies plan to annoy Springboks with their 'Great Dane' and 'Jack Russell'
Tom Hooper says the Wallabies will match the Springboks physically at Ellis Park, led by enforcer Will Skelton and feisty scrum-half Nic White. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix After being outgunned by the Springboks in their last four Tests, the Wallabies know what to expect at Ellis Park on Saturday — but they believe they now have heavy artillery of their own. Giant lock Will Skelton and powerful flanker Tom Hooper both returned to the Wallabies set-up for the recent series against the British and Irish Lions, Skelton from overseas and Hooper from a long-term shoulder injury. Both made a marked difference, and Australia did not go backwards in the second and third Tests. Skelton missed the first Test through injury, but his 2.3m, 145kg frame had a telling impact thereafter. Hooper, an explosive flanker at 1.99m and 118kg, was named Player of the Match in the third Test victory in Sydney. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Hooper said the Wallabies would go toe-to-toe with the Springboks. 'Will (Skelton) will definitely be up for that challenge, and anyone picked in the jersey alongside him will follow him into battle,' he said. 'Will is an enforcer, and that is what he has been doing for a long time in the beautiful sport of rugby. 'For lack of a better word, he loves being that grub; he loves taking it to teams physically and making the gentleman's game a little more exciting. We love playing alongside him, and he is just a huge physical presence. 'I've never felt so small,' Hooper joked. 'At the end of the game, I give him a big hug.
