PM, Saad Rafique discuss political situation
In recent weeks, a number of key PTI lawmakers – including the opposition leader in National Assembly, Omar Ayub Khan – have been convicted or disqualified by the courts, resulting in around six seats falling vacant in the lower house.
Amid these developments, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with senior PML-N leader and former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique on Thursday to discuss the prevailing political situation and strategise the party's response.
This has paved the way for a series of by-elections, with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) expected to announce the schedule shortly. These polls are seen as crucial in determining the current political balance.
The PML-N has intensified its preparations for the upcoming by-elections, viewing them as an opportunity to further strengthen its position in parliament and consolidate public support.
According to senior PML-N leaders, the forthcoming by-elections on seats vacated by PTI lawmakers are seen as an important test of political strength for both the ruling party and the opposition.
Rafique is known within party circles for his candid approach and had taken a somewhat independent stance following the 2024 general elections.
Unlike many of his colleagues, he publicly acknowledged electoral defeats amid controversies surrounding the disputed Form 47 results, which PTI continues to challenge.
Sources within the PML-N interpreted the meeting as part of efforts to recalibrate internal dynamics and strengthen the party's campaign machinery ahead of the by-polls.
Rafique retains considerable influence in Lahore and neighbouring constituencies – areas that remain vital for the party's electoral prospects.
PML-N insiders said that Rafique is still reluctant to contest any by-elections given the current political turmoil in the country, which he has openly criticised on several occasions.
They added that the prime minister made a last-ditch effort to convince him to contest the forthcoming by-elections, strengthen his position, and play a role in steering the country out of the prevalent crisis.
However, Rafique sought time to consult his close aide before making a decision. With the political climate becoming increasingly intense, the PML-N is gearing up for the by-elections with renewed focus.

Convicts can't travel abroad, PHC tells Shibli
The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday dismissed a petition by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Senator Shibli Faraz against the placement of his name on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL), ruling that a convicted person cannot be permitted to travel abroad. A two-member bench, comprising Justice Syed Arshad Ali and Justice Dr Khurshid Iqbal, heard the matter. Faraz's counsel, Bashir Khan Wazir, informed the court that while his client's name had been removed from the Exit Control List (ECL), it was subsequently placed on the PNIL. He acknowledged that the petition had been filed before his client's conviction, which had altered the circumstances. Justice Syed Arshad Ali observed that Faraz now had only two legal options, to serve his sentence in jail or seek bail from the court. "We cannot turn a blind eye. How can we allow a convicted person to travel abroad?" the judge remarked. The government counsel submitted a report confirming that Faraz's name had been moved from the ECL to the PNIL. The defense stated that Faraz intended to surrender before the court and requested disposal of the petition. The bench accepted the request and closed the case. Bail extensions for PTI leaders In separate proceedings, the PHC extended the protective bail of PTI Peshawar Region President and MNA Atif Khan, MNA Shahid Khattak, and Senator Mishaal Azam until September 2, barring authorities from arresting them in any registered case. The court also directed the federal government to provide complete details of all cases filed against them. Hearing petitions filed by the three leaders and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister Meena Khan, the same bench was told by their counsel that numerous cases had been lodged against them without providing specifics. The Assistant Attorney General admitted the government's report was still pending and assured the court it would be submitted at the next hearing. In Meena Khan's case, the Assistant Deputy Attorney General revealed that three cases were registered against him in Islamabad, with no pending inquiries at NAB or FIA. The court disposed of his petition, advising him to approach the relevant trial courts. Azam Swati moves contempt petition Meanwhile, PTI Senator Azam Swati once again faced a travel ban when stopped at Peshawar Airport. He filed a contempt of court petition through Advocate Ali Azeem against the federal government, FIA, and other authorities, alleging violation of court orders that had directed the removal of his name from all stop-lists. Islamabad hosts Independence Day, Marka-e-Haq festivities
A special grand ceremony is underway at Jinnah Sports Stadium on Wednesday night to mark Marka-i-Haq and Pakistan's Independence Day, attended by the country's top civil and military leadership. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, First Lady Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, federal and state ministers, and foreign diplomats are present at the event. The ceremony featured parades by various branches of the armed forces, with military contingents from Türkiye and Azerbaijan also participating. According to state-run Radio Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz will inaugurate the Marka-e-Haq Monument during the event. NA adopts ATA amendment allowing 3-month ‘preventive detention' of terror suspects
The National Assembly on Wednesday adopted the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Bill, 2024 with majority votes, rejecting amendments proposed by JUI-F member Aliya Kamran while incorporating an amendment proposed by PPP member Syed Naveed Qamar. Minister of State for Interior and Narcotics Control Talal Chaudhry moved the bill further to amend the Anti-terrorism Act, 1997 [The Anti-terrorism (Amendment) Bill, 2024] in the House. The House passed the bill through a clause-by-clause read. Earlier, the House adopted the motion to consider the bill with 125 votes in its favour and 59 against it. Anti-terror bill moved in NA: LEAs, agencies could detain suspects for 3 months The statement of objects and reasons of the bill states that the current security situation requires a robust response that goes beyond the existing legal framework. The erstwhile amendment of Section 11EEEE of the Act ibid, is required to be re-inserted to empower the government, armed forces, and civil armed forces with the necessary authority to detain individuals who pose a significant threat to national security. This provision would allow for the preventative detention of suspects based on credible information or reasonable suspicion, thereby disrupting terrorist plots before they can be executed. This will also provide law enforcement agencies with the legal backing to conduct more effective operations against terrorism. It would facilitate the use of Joint Interrogation Teams (JITs), composed of members from various law enforcement and intelligence agencies, to conduct comprehensive inquiries and gather actionable intelligence. The National Assembly also passed two more bills, including the National School of Public Policy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Petroleum (Amendment) Bill, 2025, as reported by the Standing committees concerned. The bills were moved by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary and Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz in the House.
