Young women in UK face more strangulation and violent threats, says charity
Refuge, one of the largest specialist domestic abuse organisations in Britain, said 525 young women and girls receiving long-term support from the charity reported experiencing physical violence between April 2024 and March 2025. Around half of them were subjected to strangulation or suffocation - a 9 per cent rise from a year earlier.
Nearly half of those reporting psychological abuse - about 615 individuals - said their perpetrator had threatened to harm them, marking a 4 per cent increase. Additionally, 35 per cent said they had been threatened with death.
'Domestic abuse often goes unnoticed, yet these new figures reveal the harrowing reality: many young lives are being devastated by this horrific crime,' said Refuge CEO Gemma Sherrington.
'To actively tackle domestic abuse, there must be a major societal shift towards improved education that shines a light on the many red flags of abuse.'
Refuge said many young victims were experiencing coercive control, a pattern of behaviour designed to isolate, manipulate, and intimidate.
Survivors quoted in Refuge's report described how abuse often began with subtle controlling behaviours and escalated over time. Such behaviours can often be overlooked by authorities as markers of domestic abuse.
Reuters reported today that Britain would reassess a tool widely used by the police and domestic abuse specialist services to gauge the level of risk faced by victims following criticism that, among other issues, it downplays patterns of coercive and controlling behaviour.
Refuge has called for domestic abuse education to be more deeply embedded in schools and for the government's upcoming strategy on violence against women and girls to strengthen support for young people. — Reuters

LONDON, Aug 16 — Some shoplifters 'feel they can rob shops with impunity', a British policing chief has said, reported PA Media/dpa. Sussex will see 'the first electronic tagging scheme for persistent shoplifters', Bourne said. The force will work with the courts on how to issue the tags and with industries to see how they can be monitored. The policing chief also criticised the 'purist application of data protection law' advising shopkeepers not to share images of suspected offenders. She said she is pleased that forces including Sussex Police will roll out live facial recognition cameras in specially adapted police vans. It was reported that officers spoke to a shopkeeper in Wrexham after he posted a sign referring to 'scumbag shoplifters'. North Wales Police said it did not appear he had committed any offence. Bourne said it appeared to be an example of 'warranted officers of the law policing the potential for hurt feelings'. She asked: 'How have we got to the point where police forces are more worried about upsetting career criminals than catching them?' Jon Cummins, Assistant Chief Constable from Avon and Somerset Police, told BBC Radio 4's 'Today' programme that wider societal issues including poverty, the cost-of-living crisis and addiction are contributing to the shoplifting spike. He said on Saturday: 'If they see somebody shoplifting, my advice to them is they must call us ... not to intervene. 'We clearly want to be attending and will be attending reports.' Bourne also cautioned against members of the public attempting to apprehend shoplifters. They may be armed and people 'run the risk' of committing assault, unlawful restraint or wrongful arrest. Earlier this week, supermarket chain Iceland said it would offer customers a £1 (US$1.35) reward if they spot shoplifters in the act. He wanted his family, who were travelling as passengers, to see him operating the controls while flying from Heathrow to New York JFK last week, according to The Sun. The newspaper reported that his actions 'alarmed' some passengers, and other crew members alerted the airline about the incident. The pilot was suspended, meaning the return flight scheduled to arrive at Heathrow on August 8 was cancelled. Affected passengers were offered alternative flights, and the vast majority arrived within four hours of their original plan, the PA news agency understands. The pilot has returned to flying after an investigation found there was no security threat. A British Airways spokesperson said: 'Safety and security is our top priority and allegations of this nature are always fully investigated.' Since the September 11 terror attacks in the United States in 2001, pilots have been required to keep cockpit doors closed and locked to prevent unauthorised access. Man sets himself, lover on fire in Kluang

(PDRM pic) PETALING JAYA : A man set himself and his lover on fire after pulling her out of a bus near the Simpang Renggam toll plaza in Kluang, Johor, on Wednesday. Kluang police chief Bahrin Noh said they received an emergency call at 5.46am informing them of a burning car at the location. 'Preliminary investigations found that the 44-year-old suspect pulled the victim, a 37-year-old woman, out of a workers' bus before pouring petrol on the victim and himself. 'The suspect then lit a lighter, setting both of them on fire. 'Another man in his 30s who was at the location attempted to help them, but was also burned,' Sinar Harian reported him as saying today. Bahrin said all three were sent to Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital to be treated for severe burns. The cause of the incident is still being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine. Bahrin called on members of the public with information on the incident to contact the nearest police station or the Kluang police headquarters at 07-7784222.
