Hybrid Napier grass scheme to be expanded to Prayagraj to boost fodder, livestock productivity
Part of the state's broader fodder security policy, the initiative seeks to ensure the year-round availability of both green and dry fodder for cattle, sheep, goats, and other livestock. The ultimate goal is to increase milk production and strengthen rural livelihoods.
Chief veterinary officer of Prayagraj, Dr SN Yadav, confirmed that a buy-back scheme is being launched in the district to encourage Napier grass cultivation. Under the programme, farmers will receive a subsidy of ₹ 20,000 per hectare. Additionally, the government will provide hybrid Napier root cuttings to selected beneficiaries and later buy back the produce at double the market price.
'This is the first time such a scheme is being implemented in Prayagraj. The selection process for the initial 10 beneficiaries is already underway,' Dr Yadav said.
Eligible participants include individual farmers, nursery owners, farmer producer organisations (FPOs), self-help groups (SHGs) and managers of cow shelters (gaushalas).
Already operational in districts like Hamirpur and Bahraich, the scheme is expected to transform the rural economy by encouraging farmers to adopt Napier grass cultivation. Officials have described the initiative as planting 'the seeds of prosperity — one blade of Napier grass at a time.'
Once the initial harvest is procured, the government plans to distribute the root cuttings more widely, encouraging large-scale adoption across the state. High in protein, Napier grass is particularly beneficial for dairy animals, significantly boosting milk yield.
'For dairy farmers, Napier is nothing short of green gold,' officials stated.
Compared to dry fodder, which costs around ₹ 12 per kilogram, Napier grass can be grown at just 50 paise per kilogram, enabling farmers to sell green fodder competitively while generating a stable income. Native to Thailand and resembling sugarcane, the grass thrives on both fertile and marginal land — even along field boundaries.
Napier matures in just 20–25 days with minimal water, producing 300–400 quintals per acre. Once planted, it regenerates from stalks and remains productive for up to 10 years, making it a low-cost, high-yield, and sustainable option for fodder cultivation.

Announcing this, chief minister Mohan Yadav said that while other states are still in the initial preparatory stage for their PM MITRA Parks, Madhya Pradesh will be holding the groundbreaking ceremony for the park at Dhar on August 25. Yadav said this has been made possible through continuous coordination with the central government. The chief minister emphasised that once completed, the PM MITRA Park will give a major boost to the development of the entire Malwa region. The Dhar district area is poised to become the second large industrial hub after Pithampur. The park will benefit cotton producing farmers in the region and generate around 300,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs. Investors and companies setting up industries here will be provided with four-lane roads, rail connectivity, and air links. Yadav reviewed preparations via video conferencing for the Prime Minister's visit, the 'Bhoomi Pujan' ceremony and the public meeting with the Indore Commissioner and Dhar Collector on Sunday night. He instructed that special arrangements be made, ensuring the participation of local farmers and smooth transport for attendees from different districts. Rajnath Singh to lay foundation stone for Rs 1,800 cr rail coach unit in MP
Bhopal, Aug 10 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the state is set to receive a major boost under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision—a new rail coach manufacturing unit. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will perform the bhoomipujan ceremony today at Dussehra Maidan in Obeidullaganj to mark the start of the project. The event will also be attended by Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Defence Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar, and Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) Chairman Shantanu Rai. A short film on the BEML project, a 3D walk-through of the proposed plant, and models of new facilities will be showcased during the programme. The plant under the name Brahma Project (BEML Rail Hub for Manufacturing) will be built on over 60 hectares in Umariya village of Raisen district, near the Bhopal border, at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore. The facility is expected to benefit Bhopal, Raisen, Sehore, and Vidisha districts, creating employment for over 5,000 people, both directly and indirectly. Technical students from the region will particularly gain from new job opportunities. Calling it a significant boost to the Make in India initiative, Yadav said the unit will manufacture coaches for Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and metro trains, ushering in a 'new era' for India's rail network. The project will also stimulate industrial growth in nearby areas, including Mandideep. The decision to establish the factory was taken a few months ago during Yadav's visit to the BEML institute in Bengaluru. The Chief Minister emphasized that the unit will fully align with Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals by utilizing mostly indigenous technology and materials, reducing foreign dependence and positioning India as a leader in defence manufacturing. 'Under the leadership of PM Modi, a new chapter of industrial development will be scripted,' Yadav said, adding that investors from Madhya Pradesh and across the country are being invited to participate. The project prioritizes environmental sustainability, featuring zero liquid waste, use of solar and renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, and green landscaping. Built as a 'green factory' using recycled and sustainable materials, the plant will initially produce 125–200 coaches per year, with capacity planned to scale up to 1,100 coaches annually within five years. Yadav said that the project will not only generate thousands of jobs but also enhance the state's technological capabilities, making Madhya Pradesh a competitive player in the global high-speed rail and metro market.
