JDT survive early scare to beat Negri Sembilan 5-3

The Star2 days ago
PETALING JAYA: Negri Sembilan's bid to spring an upset against 11-time Super League champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) ended in disappointment as they went down 5-3 at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on Tuesday (Aug 12).
Nidzam Jamil's side shocked the hosts by taking the lead in the eighth minute through Ghanaian striker Joseph Esso.
Barely four minutes later, Bosnian import Jovan Motika struck to make it 2-0, leaving the Southern Tigers reeling.
JDT pulled one back in the 38th minute when Jon Irazabal headed home from a corner, before a wayward backpass gifted Joao Figueiredo the equaliser in the 41st minute.
The second half saw the champions take control, with Irazabal netting his second in the 57th minute and Arif Aiman Hanapi adding another a minute later.
Motika reduced the deficit in the 60th minute, but Bergson Da Silva sealed the points with a spectacular scissor kick as JDT claimed their second win of the season.

JDT placed in Pot 1, a major boost for ACLE campaign

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have received a major boost ahead of the Asian Champions League Elite (ACLE) after being placed in Pot 1 for Friday's draw. The 11-time consecutive Super League champions will share the top pot with J-League winners Vissel Kobe, South Korea's Ulsan HD, China's Shanghai Port, Thai champions Buriram United and Australia's Melbourne City. Pot 2 features Japan's Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Machida Zelvia, South Korea's Gangwon and Seoul, and China's Shanghai Shenhua and Chengdu Rongcheng. JDT will play eight matches — four home, four away — in the 12-team East Asia elite league, with the top eight teams advancing to the round of 16. Last season, the Southern Tigers finished third in the East Asia League stage but crashed out in the last 16 after a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Buriram. The new season kicks off next month and runs until April.

KL City frustrated by 10-man Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR: Ten-man Sabah delivered a late sucker punch to hold Kuala Lumpur City to a 1-1 draw in a Super League match at the KLFA Stadium on Wednesday. Both teams played end-to- end football before disaster struck visitors Sabah, who were reduced to 10 men after Dean Pelekanos was shown a red card at the end of the first half. Referee Zamzaidi Katimin sent off Pelekanos for a rough tackle on Ryan Lambert after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check. The City Boys used their numerical advantage well in the second half and broke the deadlock through Declan Lambert's deflected effort (64th minute). However, Sabah had the last laugh after Gabriel Peres' header deep into added time earned them the draw. In another match, Terengganu had to dig deep to hold Police to a 2-2 draw at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak. The Cops took the lead through Bernard Doumbia's brace (13th and 57th), while the Turtles' goals were scored by Azam Azmi Murad (63rd) and Yann Mabella (90th). At the Hang Jebat Stadium, hosts Melaka were held to a 1-1 draw by Penang. The match saw the Panthers taking the lead through Dylan Wenzel-Halls (29th) before Melaka equalised through Juan Silva (70th).

Melaka FC struggles with team rhythm in Super League opener

MELAKA FC is still searching for their rhythm after a 1-1 draw against Penang FC in their 2025-2026 Super League opener at Hang Jebat Stadium. Head coach K. Devan acknowledged that the team's new foreign signings need time to gel with the revamped squad. He noted that the first-half performance lacked aggression, allowing Penang FC too much attacking space. Defensive lapses and ineffective counterattacks also contributed to the opponents creating chances. 'In the first half, we could have played better but were less aggressive and gave Penang FC too much space,' Devan said. He added that communication issues with the Brazilian players and inexperience in the Super League were key factors. Most local players in the squad came from the A1 League, adding to the adjustment challenges. Penang FC took the lead in the 28th minute through Dylan Christopher Charles Wenzek Halls' header. Melaka FC equalised in the 69th minute thanks to Brazilian striker Juan Douglas Teles Da Silva. Devan pointed out that the team lacked an on-field leader, a problem he hopes to resolve soon. Despite improvements in the second half, he stressed the need to build confidence and adapt to his tactics. 'They have only trained together for less than a month,' Devan said. The two teams will face off again this Sunday in the FA Cup round of 16 at Hang Jebat Stadium. Devan emphasised the importance of winning at home to stay competitive. Penang FC coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail admitted his team is improving but needs to address weaknesses. 'We need our first win in either the Super League or FA Cup to boost morale,' he said. The upcoming FA Cup match will test both teams' ability to adjust their strategies. - Bernama
