‘My Mother's Wedding' Review: Daddy Issues

New York Times3 days ago
In 'My Mother's Wedding,' three sisters return to their childhood home in the English countryside to celebrate their mother's third marriage. Daddy issues and sororal spats are guaranteed, but the spunk and tragicomedy that fuel similar ensemble family dramas (like 'Little Miss Sunshine' or 'The Farewell') are in short supply in this contrived personal project by the writer-director Kristin Scott Thomas, who plays Diana, the mother.
Scarlett Johansson, sporting a shoddy English accent, plays Diana's daughter Katherine, a Royal Navy captain who lost two fathers. The first, Katherine's birth father, died when she was still a toddler; the second, her stepfather, raised her until his death when she was 12.
Both men were Royal Navy pilots, so you can imagine where Katherine got the motivation to enlist; though her rise in the ranks has also meant reproducing her fathers' mistakes, prioritizing work over time with her girlfriend, Jack (Freida Pinto), and their son. Flashbacks to Katherine's childhood are visualized with crude black-and-white animation, feeding into the film's bland sentimentality.
The other sisters bring a lighter touch: Victoria (Sienna Miller), a Hollywood actress, flirts with an old flame (Mark Stanley) and considers a marriage of convenience to a wealthy Frenchman (Thibault de Montalembert). Georgina (Emily Beecham) has hired a private investigator (Samson Kayo) to find proof of her husband's infidelity.
The girls aren't terribly impressed by Geoff (James Fleet), their mother's fiancé, because they still idolize their fathers. All the while, we're wondering why these accomplished women could be so uniformly stunted by their delusions of paternal grandeur — which could maybe make for a funny setup. In this overly mannered, weirdly flat dramedy, it's not.
My Mother's WeddingNot rated. Running time: 1 hour 35 minutes. In theaters.

The Weapons actor recently sat down with Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast for a sprawling interview touching on his past and future projects, including whether he would inhabit the Avengers franchise again. Speaking more broadly to the filmmaking duo's helming of 2026's upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Brolin said: 'Of course they're gonna come up with something really fun. I mean, who knows? That [Endgame] was a 10-year and a building kind of thing and that was its own bookended deal, and I don't know what they're gonna do, but I'm sure it'll be interesting.' To that end, Brolin pointed out that the original role of the havoc-wreaking Thanos was supposed to be a one-off cameo, before it blossomed into a full-blown antagonist for the squad of intergalactic Marvel superheroes. Speaking to his other projects, the Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery actor previewed that Dune: Part Three has a 'super good' script and provides a worthy conclusion to the Denis Villeneuve film trilogy 'in a big way.' 'I just talked to one of the heads at Warner Bros. and they're very, very excited in a visceral way. It's good. I said something like, 'I heard dailies are really good.' And he goes, 'How do you know?'' Brolin said, joking about his limited role in the threequel. Elsewhere, the Oscar nominee added that he recently heard talk of a followup to 2015's Sicario and 2018's Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which he called 'very, very real,' though the actor had no further information to share. Freddie Mercury's 'secret daughter' feels he 'belonged to everyone'

A woman who claims to be Freddie Mercury's daughter believes he "belonged to everyone". The Queen frontman died in November 1991, aged 45, and the woman - who is known only as B - has now explained that she "had to become an adult without him". She told MailOnline: "After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my dad now belonged to everyone. "I cried and mourned my dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. "When you are 15 years old. it's not easy. "I had to become an adult without him, and live all the structuring moments and events without his support. "For 30 years I had to build my life and family without him and accept that he wouldn't be there to share the happy moments with us. For 30 years, while the rest of the world was reinterpreting Mercury's life, his music and all that he had been, I needed to have my dad just for me and my family." The woman claims that she was born in 1976 after Freddie had a fling with a close pal's wife. But Mary Austin - Freddie's one-time lover and close friend - has questioned her claims. In response, B said: "I am devastated by Mary Austin's alleged response. For 34 years, the truth of Freddie's life has been distorted, twisted and rewritten, but she said nothing - with the exception of her comment about the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, which she called "artistic licence". "Here, she has not yet read the book, yet she apparently makes this statement. I don't understand why." B has detailed her life and experiences in a new book with Lesley Ann Jones. The author said: "I am surprised by Mary Austin's response. As a journalist I approached her for interview countless times over many years, but she never once responded. In this book, however, there is only one voice: that of Freddie's daughter herself. "The story is hers. The quotes are hers. Her source is the collection of 17 handwritten diaries that Freddie gave her three weeks before he died."

Freddie Mercury's 'secret' daughter speaks out for the first time ahead of publication of bombshell book

A woman who says she is the secret daughter of Freddie Mercury has spoken publicly for the first time ahead of the release of a book telling her story. The woman, known only as B, claims she was conceived in 1976 after her mother — the wife of a close friend of Mercury — had a fling with the Queen frontman, a year after Bohemian Rhapsody became a hit. Her book, Love, Freddie, co-written with author Lesley-Anne Jones, is due out in September and draws on what she says are 17 handwritten diaries Mercury gave her shortly before his death in 1991 from complications related to AIDS. B says Mercury had a 'very close and loving' relationship with her, adding: 'He cherished me like a treasured possession.' In a statement published by the Daily Mail, she said: 'I didn't want to share my Dad with the whole world. After his death, I had to learn to live with the attacks against him, the misrepresentations of him, and with the feeling that my Dad now belonged to everyone. 'I cried and mourned my Dad, while fans all around the world mourned Freddie. When you are 15 years old, it's not easy. I had to become an adult without him… For 30 years I had to build my life and family without him… I needed to have my Dad just for me and my family. How could I have spoken before?' Her claims have been met with scepticism from some of Mercury's closest friends. Mary Austin, the singer's former partner who inherited much of his estate, has reportedly said she did not know B existed. Guitarist Brian May is also said to have had no knowledge of a daughter and has expressed doubt over her story. B said she was 'devastated' by Austin's alleged response, accusing her of 'saying nothing' for 34 years while 'Freddie's life was distorted, twisted and rewritten'. She also criticised Austin for commenting before reading the book. Author Lesley-Anne Jones said: 'I am surprised by Mary Austin's response. As a journalist I approached her for interview countless times over many years, but she never once responded. In this book, however, there is only one voice: that of Freddie's daughter herself. The story is hers. The quotes are hers. Her source is the collection of 17 handwritten diaries that Freddie gave her three weeks before he died.' B said it was her decision to approach Jones and insisted the journalist had respected her wishes 'each step of the way'. She added that the 'reasons and circumstances' of contacting her were explained in the book. She concluded by lamenting the 'discussions we couldn't have, questions we couldn't ask and answers we didn't get to give' with her father over the last 34 years, along with the 'birthdays, Christmases, moments and time we never got to enjoy together'.
