Price cuts underway across Egypt, says trade federation report

Zawya2 days ago
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has reviewed a report from the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce on the progress of a recent initiative to lower prices on a wide range of goods and services across the country.
The report, reviewed on Monday, outlines the implementation of an action plan agreed upon during meetings between the prime minister, the trade and industry federations, and major producers and retail chains.
According to the report, provincial chambers of commerce have begun implementing initiatives to provide discounted goods, with price reductions already underway in most governorates.
The start of the 'Summer Sale' was brought forward to Aug. 4, with 2,134 stores participating, a 33% increase over the past week. These stores are offering discounts ranging from 10% to 50% and are set to continue through the back-to-school season.
The Ministry of Supply, through the Holding Company for Food Industries, is offering discounts of 5% to 18% on 640 food items it produces and imports, available at its network of over 1,000 consumer complexes and outlets nationwide.
In parallel, producers and importers, in cooperation with all major retail chains, are offering discounts of 5% to over 20% on many food and consumer goods, with some items seeing reductions of up to 24%.
The report noted a continued average decrease of about 10% in the prices of vegetables and fruits. A large number of producers and importers of electrical and home appliances have also begun offering discounts ranging from 5% to 35%, with many participating in an initiative to provide long-term financing with no down payment.
Prices for school supplies have been reduced by 10% compared to last year, and an initiative is underway to lower the prices of computers and their accessories, also with long-term financing options.
The report also stated that the prices of local and imported cars, both new and used, have been reduced by 10% to 20%, again with long-term financing available.
The report confirmed the continued expansion of 'one-day markets' organised by the ministries of supply and local development in cooperation with the chambers of commerce. More than 120 such markets have been set up across all governorates, providing goods directly from the producer to the consumer, thereby reducing repeated handling and transport costs by up to 15%.
The report also monitored stable wholesale prices for wheat, flour, and sugar, and noted that the prices of poultry and meat have decreased, while dairy and egg prices have stabilised after previous declines.
The report anticipates that the prices of goods will continue to fall due to the ongoing decrease in wholesale prices and a large surplus in both production inputs and finished goods, coupled with lower purchasing power and increased competition.

Israel demands release of all 50 Gaza hostages

Israel is demanding the release of all 50 hostages held in Gaza, Israeli public broadcaster Kan cited the prime minister's office as saying on Tuesday, as talks on a proposed deal envisaging a 60-day truce and release of half the hostages continue. Efforts to pause the fighting gained new momentum over the past week after Israel announced plans for a new offensive to seize control of Gaza City, and Egypt and Qatar have been pushing to restart indirect talks between the sides on a US-backed ceasefire plan. The deal is nearly identical to a proposal Washington put forward earlier this year, a spokesperson for mediator Qatar said on Tuesday. Hamas rejected that deal in July. Under the deal, ten Israeli hostages held in Gaza will be returned along with the bodies of 18 others, spread out over 60 days. Israel says that of 50 hostages held by Hamas and its allies, 20 are believed to be alive. In exchange, Israel will release 150 detained Palestinians it sentenced to life in prison and 50 Palestinians it sentenced to more than 15 years. For each body Hamas returns, Israel will return the bodies of 10 Palestinians. Israel will permit aid to enter Gaza with the involvement of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The proposal includes the release of 200 Palestinian convicts jailed in Israel and an unspecified number of imprisoned women and minors, in return for 10 living and 18 deceased hostages from Gaza, according to a Hamas official. Two Egyptian security sources confirmed the details, and added that Hamas has requested the release of hundreds of Gaza detainees as well. The proposal includes a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces, which presently control 75 per cent of Gaza and the entry of more humanitarian aid into the enclave, where a population of 2.2 million people is increasingly facing famine. The last round of indirect talks between the sides ended in deadlock in July, with the sides trading blame for the collapse. Israel had previously agreed to the outline, advanced by US special Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, but negotiations faltered over some of its details.

Egypt: President El-Sisi Speaks with French President

Today, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call from French President Emmanuel Macron. The Spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy, said the call reviewed progress in the distinguished relations between Egypt and France. Both sides stressed the importance of continuing joint action to enhance all aspects of cooperation and activate the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries, particularly in the fields of economy, trade, and investment. During the call, the two presidents exchanged views on regional developments. President El-Sisi reviewed Egypt's intensive efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, release hostages and captives, and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid, light of the exacerbating humanitarian crisis in the Strip. In this context, the President affirmed Egypt's firm position, rejecting any attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land or infringe upon their legitimate rights, mainly the establishment of an independent state along the June 4, 1967, borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. French President Macron expressed his great appreciation for Egypt's efforts to stop the war, stressing the importance of reaching a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions. This is in addition to the need to accelerate the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip. For his part, President El-Sisi reiterated Egypt's welcome of France's decision to recognize the Palestinian state in September 2025, considering this step significant progress toward achieving justice for the Palestinian people and enabling them to obtain their full rights. The two presidents affirmed their determination to further strengthen joint coordination between Egypt and France, in light of the rapid developments in the Middle East, also given the alignment in views on most issues of common interest, reflecting the deep strategic relations between the two countries.
