‘Special' Max Dowman, 15, adds to Mikel Arteta's Arsenal dilemma as he shines in same position as Saka and Nwaneri
Mikel Arteta has had his eye on 15-year-old Dowman for the past 12 months and regularly introduced him to first-team training sessions.

Mikel Arteta has history of guiding young players into top superstars

Had it not been for regulation barriers in both the Prem and Uefa, the Hale End schoolboy would have made his competitive senior debut by now under Arteta.
That's how highly rated he is by everyone at London Colney, leaving most first-team players stunned by his progression, ability and unflappable nature.
Even Arteta has been shocked by how quickly Dowman has become one of, if not the, most talented teenagers in the country, and it will now be a surprise if he is not named in most of Arsenal's matchday squads next season across all four competitions they are involved in.
After travelling with the squad on their mid-season warm-weather Dubai camp back in February, the plan was always for Dowman and a select few others from the academy to fly to Singapore and Hong Kong.
No one on the outside looking in could have guessed how much game time he would get in their opening two games in Singapore against AC Milan and Newcastle last week.
A total of 55 minutes off the bench is not bad going, especially for someone who still needs to be managed, both physically with his slight and yet-to-develop muscular frame against elite man mountains, and mentally as he comes to terms with the pressure being on him as the golden boy of Arsenal's latest academy grads.
Arteta has a history in guiding young talents and transforming them into first-team players faster than most would predict, just look at Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly.
The pair were footballing nobodies at the start of last season – mere hopefuls – who looked their age, perhaps younger.

Now, they have bulked up, matured on and off the pitch and look like Prem regulars, and in Lewis-Skelly's case, potentially England's first-choice left-back at next summer's World Cup.
Arteta has known when to push them and when to give them some time away from the spotlight, a crucial period of development for any teenager adjusting to Prem football.
Arsenal CONFIRM £63.5million Viktor Gyokeres transfer as striker takes iconic No14 made famous by Thierry Henry
Nwaneri had just that after making his Prem debut aged 15 at Brentford in September 2022, waiting 17 months for his next one at West Ham in February 2024.
Once Dowman makes his first Prem appearances, the clamour for him to push on at lightning speed will be huge.
We have already seen what that could look and sound like on this tour. In Singapore, his name has been chanted at every game and he was hounded for autographs at the open training at the Singapore National Stadium.
Arteta will have to be the party pooper more often than not in the early months of the season, but should he perform like he has done against Milan and Newcastle, the handbrake may have to come off sooner than expected.
His touch, turn and dribble past several Newcastle players and into the box to earn a match-winning penalty in the final ten minutes last weekend shows what he can do against experienced players nearly twice his age.
Arteta has used Dowman off the right so far, a position the youngster has played a lot in for the youth teams for club and country, cutting in and shooting – often scoring – with his left foot.
There will be a method to Arteta's thinking – being on the wing gives Dowman some breathing space during games as he continues his adaptation.

He may eventually move into a more central position over the next few years, but Arteta likes his young players trying out different roles to aid their learning and to give him more options when picking squads.
Nwaneri played in a midfield three last season, but also on the right in Bukayo Saka's three-month injury absence, and Arteta has spoken previously of the 18-year-old potentially becoming a No9 later down the line.
Dowman could now start his first senior Arsenal game against Tottenham on Thursday in Hong Kong, and the crazy thing is that it does not sound that... crazy.
That's how quickly Dowman is progressing. Arteta called him 'special' after the Toon outing, and the Spanish coach does not chuck praise like that lightly.
Last term, Arteta would bring up Dowman's name unprompted in answers to questions about squad depth.

Arteta has been sure to carefully guide him into first team football

We must be careful not to hype up too soon someone who has not yet turned 16, but it is hard not to when he is getting better with every minute he plays around world class players while showing he has the guts to step up in penalty shoot-outs, albeit a friendly one against Milan last week.
Club captain Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice have acted as brotherly figures for him, but even they are struggling not to board the Dowman hype train.
Last March, Rice claimed he was the 'best 15-year-old in the country'.
With a loan move unlikely next season, Dowman is set to be a regular face on the bench as Arteta plots the talented kid's path from a nobody to a special somebody.

Kieron Bowie's eyebrow-raising Hibs stat and his response to Scotland number nine question
Hibs striker putting himself on Steve Clarke's radar ahead of World Cup qualifiers Sign up to our Football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! It might be a surprising detail to dwell on following his two-goal, match-winning performance against Dundee on Sunday. Kieron Bowie seemed almost as delighted by the fact he finished the game, thereby completing his first 90 minutes for Hibs, as he was by the brace, his second for the club (and second versus Dundee). Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With the first anniversary of him joining Hibs set to fall this Friday, he was asked afterwards when he had last played a full 90 minutes. Northampton, he replied, the club he was on loan at from Fulham for a couple of seasons. Hibs striker Kieron Bowie at full time after his double secured a 2-0 win over Dundee. (Photo by Mark Scates / SNS Group) | SNS Group Further investigation reveals that it seems to have been the penultimate game of the 2023-24 season in a home 2-1 loss to Exeter City. Quite some time ago, in other words. Injury has of course accounted for this eyebrow-raising statistic as has larger squads and more substitutes as well as increased knowledge of sports conditioning, with managers less inclined to play players into the ground. Bowie sustained a hamstring injury while on Scotland Under-21 duty last Autumn. He did not reappear until January, when he helped his side revive their season and made his international debut for the senior side against Liechtenstein in June. Given the latter development, it was important that he hit the ground running this season while demonstrating that he is in good enough physical condition to last an entire match, particularly having played 80 minutes of Hibs' heartbreaking European defeat against Midtjylland last Thursday. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He was one of ten players asked to 'go again' by manager David Gray against Dundee, which some found surprising given the options on the bench. Bowie was delighted to be named in the first XI twice in such quick succession (he also started in the first leg) having found starts hard to come by last season, even when fit. 'If the manager wants to play me, obviously I'm going to play,' he said. 'I'm not going to say, 'No, I don't want to play'. I played 90 today, which is my first 90 for the club, so I'm glad to be able to do that.' Gray is not a cruel man. He was conscious that Bowie was gunning for a hat-trick and had been since shortly after the half hour mark of a game where Hibs looked to be toying with their much-changed, nervous looking hosts. Bowie will rarely get a better chance to claim a first career treble and Gray's decision to leave him on seemed to be in recognition of this, despite the prospect of another long evening against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in a Conference League qualifier. Bowie appreciated the gesture. 'I think it was to try to get my hat trick,' he said. 'But I was happy enough with two in the end.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Kieron Bowie in action for Northampton Town against Exeter City during a Sky Bet League One match on April 20, 2024. (Photo by) | Getty Images This certainly seemed the case when, with time running out, Bowie was seen running with the ball into the corner to protect the one-goal lead when an attack might have been on. There will be other opportunities. 'I scored six goals last season in a limited number of games, so I'm just trying to score as many as I can this season,' he said. 'Obviously, towards the end of the season I started a few more games, but it was nowhere near enough as I wanted. But I feel like now I'm fit enough and I'm strong enough that I can go out there week in, week out and play 90 minutes. That's definitely a big thing.' He certainly proved this - and Steve Clarke should take note - on Sunday. The Scotland manager will have started to sift through names before naming his squad for the vital opening World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Belarus at the start of next month. Bowie remains hopeful, as he ought to be after breaking into the squad at the end of last season. The 22-year-old is big and strong and knows where the goal is. He is just what Scotland need at this time although he will face tougher examinations than Dundee could present at the weekend. Even in training, that's probably been the case. He revealed that he regularly quizzes Hibs centre halves about playing against No. 9s. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I speak to the defenders that we have at the club, and they say what they don't like playing against,' Bowie reports. He wants to make himself as awkward as possible to play against. A goal or two or maybe even that elusive hat trick in Belgrade later this week would reinforce what already looks like a good claim for inclusion in Clarke's next squad.

Revealed: All-in wrestling with Rocky gives Hibs and Scotland striker his edge
Former Fulham forward chasing more international caps Sign up to our Hibs football newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Did you know with a Digital Subscription to Edinburgh News, you can get unlimited access to the website including our premium content, as well as benefiting from fewer ads, loyalty rewards and much more. Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... Scotland striker Kieron Bowie has revealed how wrestling with Rocky Bushiri is giving him the fighting strength to lead the line for Hibs. And the 22-year-old, who got off the mark with a double on the opening weekend of Scottish Premiership action, hopes he's doing enough to get his 'foot in the door' of Steve Clarke's full international set-up for the long term. Former Fulham forward Bowie, who missed a chunk of his first season at Easter Road after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty with the Scotland Under-21s, has impressed after getting a full preseason under his belt. Having led the line to great effect in the unlucky Europa League loss to Midtjylland, he absolutely rag-dolled the Dundee defence and scored both goals in a 2-1 win at Dens Park yesterday. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The £600,000 signing, eager to make his case for more national team honours after winning his first senior cap in the summer international window, said: 'That's what I try to do, pride myself and just make myself as hard as possible to play against. I speak to the defenders that we have at the club, and they say what they don't like playing against, so I'm trying to do that myself. I'm just awkward to play against. 'Definitely, Rocky is a big, strong unit, so you don't come up against many players that are stronger than him. So to train against him and do well against him in training, that's the highest level. 'What does he not like me doing? Anything! I just get the ball; he just lets me have it. He's like: 'Nah, I'll just let you play, I don't want to hurt you …'' Bowie was called up by Clarke for the summer friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein. An unused sub for the 3-1 loss to Iceland at Hampden, he came off the bench for the final 12 minutes of a thumping 4-0 win over Liechtenstein in Vaduz. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Che Adams bagged a hat-trick in that game, with fellow frontman George Hirst bagging the fourth. But the role of Scotland's first-choice No. 9 is still considered to be up for grabs – if someone can force their way into Clarke's consciousness ahead of the World Cup qualifying campaign kicking off against Denmark next month. When it was suggested that the door was open for someone to lay a claim on the starting place, the 22-year-old agreed: 'Yeah, it is. And there's a few young lads there. Obviously James Wilson, Tommy Conway. Forward ready for 'hostility' of Partizan tie 'And there's quite a few of us that are there that are all competing for a chance to play. Obviously, they've played a few more games than me, so I'm just trying to get my foot in the door. 'Yeah, I mean, that's what I hopefully do. Hopefully try and get in more Scotland squads and see what I can do.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Bowie is a guaranteed starter for Hibs as they head to Belgrade for Thursday night's Europa League third qualifying round tie against Partizan. He's already looking forward to just his third experience of European football. 'Yeah, obviously Serbia will be a totally different challenge,' he said, the former Raith Rovers prospect adding: 'Obviously the hostility and all that comes with playing there. But I'm sure we'll just take it in our stride. Roll on Thursday.'

Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Eberechi Eze over Arsenal transfer this summer
Rio Ferdinand has warned Eberechi Eze he may struggle for game time if he joins Arsenal from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. Eze has been strongly linked to Arsenal ahead of the new Premier League season and the player is thought to be keen on a switch to north London. Arsenal are reluctant to pay Eze's £68m price tag – but believe they can negotiate a lower fee before the summer window closes on September 1. Eze has established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, helping Palace land a historic FA Cup trophy last term. The 27-year-old has played a total of 167 games for Palace to date, registering 40 goals and 28 assists for the south London club. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. While agreeing personal terms with Arsenal is unlikely to be a significant issue, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who works as a football pundit, has told the Englishman to think twice about a transfer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: 'I don't think [Arsenal] need Eze. Why do [Arsenal] need Eze? Where is he going to play? 'You've got Martin Zubimendi as a holding midfielder, Declan Rice on the left-hand side of the No.8, Martin Odegaard on the right-hand side. 'Then you've got a winger – out of Noni Madueke or Gabriel Martinelli… He'd play where Declan Rice plays.' Analysis from Sports Editor James Goldman… It was almost impressive that after spending nearly £200m on new blood that the Gunners looked so distinctly recognisable in their 1-0 pre-season defeat to Tottenham. A lack of invention and reliance on Bukayo Saka, allied to the traditional Gabriel Martinelli off, Leandro Trossard on substitution had fans despairing. It's obvious why Arsenal supporters are crying out for Eberechi Eze. Quizzed if the move made sense for Arsenal, Ferdinand agreed, arguing that Eze's potential arrival would give the Gunners more depth. He also said that Eze could fit in the Arsenal XI if Rice was deployed as the defensive midfielder instead of new signing Martin Zubimendi. 'If Declan Rice played as a holding midfielder, I'd take Eze in a heartbeat,' Ferdinand added. More Trending 'Yeah, he would give [Arsenal] depth. You could move it about. If Declan Rice gets injured, who have you got? Max Dowman.' Arsenal feel Eze's best position is when he operates as a No.10 but also view him as a versatile attacking player who can be deployed on the left. It's also reported that Arsenal are looking to sell a forward before making a formal move for Eze. Meanwhile, it should be noted that Palace chairman Steve Parish has currently shown no indication he would be open to negotiating a lower price for Eze.
