Too early to say if US tariffs will impact JS-SEZ, says Johor exco man
State investment, trade, consumer affairs and human resources committee chairman Lee Ting Han said it was too early to say if the new tariff rate would have an impact on the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).
'Initially, the Federal Government projected that Malaysia would get a good deal, but the United States decided to increase the tariff.
'So now, we have been told that the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry is negotiating with its American counterparts,' he added.
Lee, who is also the Paloh assemblyman, was speaking on the sidelines of the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia's (ACCCIM) 79th annual general meeting at a hotel here on Sunday (July 13).
He added that the state government hoped the talks between Malaysia and the United States would yield some good news.
'Johor is among the biggest exporters of petrochemicals, semiconductors, electrical and electronic goods, and furniture to the world, including to the United States, but we are still uncertain about the impact of the new tariff rate,' he said.
On Monday (July 7), the United States announced it would impose a higher 25% tariff on all Malaysian products exported to the United States effective Aug 1, an increase from the 24% announced in April.
International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia is optimistic that further negotiations will bring a positive outcome.
He said the Aug 1 deadline provides Malaysia several weeks to negotiate for a 'win-win' trade deal for both countries.
'Of course, we will continue the engagement.
'If we are not optimistic, why should we continue the engagement?
'The important thing is that the US still wants to negotiate,' he added.

Data centres to boost construction jobs in 2H25
PETALING JAYA: The second half of 2025 (2H25) will see more job flows coming the way of construction companies, driven by key structural themes such as the expansion of data centres (DCs) and the ongoing development of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, which is gaining traction. Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research said the DC award cycle in 2H25 follows multiple award decisions for DC tenders made in 1H25, including five multibillion ringgit tenders for one US-based hyperscaler. 'For the DC segment, we take a 'big is better'' view, anticipating further inroads to be made by sector's big-three players (namely Gamuda Bhd , Sunway Construction Group Bhd and IJM Corp Bhd ), riding on competitive advantages such as balance sheet strength, track record and the ability to leverage their integrated structures, including access to building material supply chains and bundled offerings in power and water infrastructure,' HLIB Research said in a report. While concerns have arisen from reports of potential artificial intelligence (AI) chip export curbs on Malaysia, these remain unconfirmed and lack actionable details. HLIB Research added that Malaysian contractors' reliance on US and Western hyperscalers for large DC projects somewhat mitigates these uncertainties, with exemptions possible – this remains their base case. Year-to-date contracts awarded have totalled RM28.9bil, marking a 39.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) growth. 'In 1H25, total DC-related contracts awarded came in at RM3.3bil (31% y-o-y fall), a slower pace when compared to the frenetic pace achieved in 1H24,' it said. Beyond DC projects, HLIB Research said 2H25 could see subcontract and system package awards for the Penang light rail transit, as well as progress on major Sabah and Sarawak road projects such as the Sabah–Sarawak Link Road. As for the commercial segment, including residential projects built on commercial land, HLIB Research said uncertainty over the sales and service tax (SST) treatment could weigh on activity in the third quarter of 2025. Developers may delay project launches until there is clarity on how SST will be applied to such developments. HLIB Research said the recent removal of the SST exemption for the construction sector, from 0% to 6%, should be manageable overall as most contracts allow for cost adjustments. 'We retain our 'overweight' sector call, anticipating sustained contract flows in 2H25 anchored by DCs, infrastructure rollout and still buoyant private sector sentiment. In our view, contractors broadly can still add to order books from the DC segment as well as infrastructure projects.' HLIB Research said forward sector valuations remains palatable, trading at price-to-earning and price-to-book multiples of 19.1 times and 1.3 times, respectively.

I joined Malaysian Bar walk as a concerned Malaysian, says Nurul Izzah
PETALING JAYA: Nurul Izzah Anwar says she joined the Malaysian Bar's march on Monday (July 14) as a "concerned Malaysian" to ensure that the Madani government continues to protect judicial integrity. "I joined this walk as a concerned Malaysian – to listen, to witness for myself and to express solidarity with the concerns raised by the Bar Council" the PKR deputy president said in an Instagram post on Monday (July 14) night. She also said she was no stranger to speaking up when it mattered "Today, I must speak up again, to ensure that the Madani government continues to protect the integrity of our judiciary," she said. Nurul Izzah explained the three branches of government – the judiciary, the executive and the legislature – exist to keep one another in check, ensuring that no single branch can operate without accountability. "An independent judiciary is the essential bulwark against overreach by the executive, the Cabinet, and the government as a whole. "The most crucial thing in an independent judicial system is the lack of interference from internal or external forces. "As such, persons appointed as the Chief Justice of Malaya; President of the Court of Appeal, the Chief Judge of Malaya and the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak must not only be capable but also be of the highest moral integrity to carry out the job," she said. On allegations of interference in the judiciary, she said this was substantiated by a police report on the matter as well as a purported leak of the Judicial Appointment Committee (JAC) meeting. "It is important that these allegations be investigated to restore trust in our judiciary. "Investigations can commence under Article 125 of the Federal Constitution through the establishment of an independent tribunal comprising at least five senior judges. Malaysia youth parliament to boost leadership with new reforms
SEREMBAN: The Malaysia Youth Parliament (PBMy) will undergo significant policy and system reforms to enhance youth leadership development, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul. He emphasised that PBMy plays a crucial role in shaping future leaders by deepening their understanding of parliamentary democracy and preparing them for modern socio-political challenges. One major reform under discussion is increasing PBMy membership to 222, matching the number of Dewan Rakyat seats for better structural alignment. Johari stated, 'Other proposed reforms include the use of a Proportional Representation system through the Closed Party List method for selecting representatives; and implementing the entire process online — from voter registration, party formation and registration, to voting.' Additionally, leadership training modules will be strengthened in phases to cultivate dynamic and principled future leaders. Johari highlighted these updates during the Malaysia Youth Parliament 2025 Guidebook Workshop, attended by PBMy advisory chairman Tan Sri Borhan Dolah and Malaysian Parliament chief administrator Datuk Ahmad Husaini Abdul Rahman. Citing an Inter-Parliamentary Union report, Johari noted that only 0.9 per cent of Dewan Rakyat members are under 30, underscoring the need for initiatives like PBMy to bridge the youth representation gap.
