Minister Tau under fire for controversial IDC board appointments

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau is digging in his heels in providing answers in connection with the appointment of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) board members.
This comes after Tau told DA MP Toby Chance and EFF MP Sinawo Thambo that his reply to specific questions will be provided at the meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition.
He stated that he had been invited to brief the portfolio committee on the appointment of the IDC board on July 22, but the meeting was postponed.
'Upon the rescheduling of the meeting, specific questions will be directly responded to during the meeting or after if there is still a need,' he said in his standard response.

On Thursday, Chance accused Tau of being evasive and deviating from his usual detailed responses.
'He has provided no information at all; ministers are obligated to respond in writing to written questions, which is unsatisfactory,' said Chance.
'We normally get detailed responses from him. This time, he seems very evasive in not providing answers,' he added.
Last month, the Cabinet announced a new eight-member board for the IDC, which included ANC-aligned members such as former ministers Sydney Mufamadi and Ayanda Dlodlo, and former KwaZulu-Natal premier and now Higher Education Deputy Minister Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
The Cabinet had also appointed Sam Bhembe, who is reportedly involved in a court battle with the finance institution over a R70 million debt.
The IDC board appointments happened at a time when there was a public outcry over the appointment of chairpersons for the boards of Sector and Education Training Authorities, which have since been cancelled.
At the time, Thambo requested an urgent committee meeting, and committee chairperson Mzwandile Masina wrote to Tau indicating it was prudent that they receive a briefing on the process followed in the IDC board appointments.
Thambo also sent questions to Tau, wanting to know the process followed and the measures his department implemented to safeguard the IDC from undue political influence, among other things.
He had expressed concern about a pattern of compromised appointments that was a direct consequence of politically motivated deployments.
'The IDC must not be reduced to a retirement destination for politically connected individuals,' read Thambo's letter to Tau.
In his written questions, Chance enquired whether Dube-Ncube informed him she was due to be appointed to the BANKSETA when she was nominated to serve on the IDC board.
He also asked whether Tau found it problematic for good governance practice that a board member of an entity that reported would occupy multiple board positions simultaneously, and also enquired about the conflict of interest involving one of the appointed board members.
Chance said on Thursday it was concerning that ANC cadres were appointed to serve on the boards regardless their qualifications as if non-ANC people could not be found.
'Unfortunately, it forms a pattern that the ANC does not look beyond its own nursery. There are a lot of qualified people who are in business and who have investment experience. Those are people who should be on the board, not former and washed ANC politicians,' he said.
Chance added that he was interested in the conflict of interest that was not revealed involving one of the appointed board members.
'We don't know what that is,' he said.
Chance also said a lot was going on in the department, such as the appointment of Sizekhaya as the lottery licence operator and the 30% tariffs imposed by the US on South African goods.
'I think he has a lot on his plate… He has a lot of unanswered questions,' he said.
'I wrote to him and put a Promotion of Access to Information Act application last week to request the record of decisions by the evaluation and the adjudication committees on the reasons why they chose Sizekhaya. I have not received a response yet,' he said.

Waldhausen stated that Msunduzi had a revolving door where municipal managers have not served their full terms of office. Since 2010, we have had over five municipal managers, some left with a cloud over their heads from supposed suspension, and then to have the suspension overturned or withdrawn,' Waldhausen said. The MARRC stated that they would work with Mndebele to turn the fortunes of Pietermaritzburg around for the better. 'We call on the mayor and council to allow the municipal manager to do his job without fear and favour,' said Waldhausen. Waldhausen said that MARRC submitted a discussion document on the White Paper on Local Government, calling for an overhaul of local government. Government finalising support package for companies vulnerable to US tariffs
The government says it is finalising a support package for companies, producers and workers affected by the tariffs on South African exports to the United States (US). This as the Trump-led administration stands firm on imposing a 30% tariff on local exports. Zululand Observer reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa said, while they continue to engage the US on the subject, a support package, to be detailed at a later stage, will be in place to assist those vulnerable to the reciprocal tariffs. 'The reciprocal tariffs have been imposed by the US on a significant number of its trade partners and South Africa has not been spared. South Africa will continue negotiating with the US regarding the 30% tariff announced by the US, which will come into effect on or after 12:01 eastern daylight time, seven days after August 1,' said Ramaphosa. He said all applicable exceptions published in the previous US Executive Order are set to remain in force. These exceptions covered products such as copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, lumber articles, certain critical minerals, stainless steel scrap and energy and energy products. 'South Africa and US trade relations are complementary in nature, and South African exports do not pose a threat to US industry. Importantly, SA exports to the US contain inputs from the African continent and contribute to intra-Africa trade. 'South Africa will continue to pursue all diplomatic efforts to safeguard its national interests. It is important that as a country, we keep our people at work and our companies producing some of the high-quality products destined for many parts of the world,' said Ramaphosa. He said they are exploring alternative markets as part of a diversification strategy in hopes of creating resilience of the country's economy. An export support desk has also been established to provide updates on development and provide advisory services to exporters. Image: Freepik Millions of South Africans were auto-assessed by the South African Revenue Service (Sars) in 2024, a move designed to simplify the tax season. But with convenience comes risk. Financial experts warn that auto-assessments, which rely solely on third-party data, can contain critical errors that might cost taxpayers dearly if left unchecked. According to Procompare, an online platform that connects South Africans with local professionals, Sars auto-assessed around 3.5 million individuals in 2024, nearly half of the country's tax base. The process draws on pre-submitted data from employers, banks, medical aids, and retirement fund administrators to estimate a taxpayer's return, but the estimation isn't always spot on, it says. Procompare says errors may include omitted income, overlooked deductions, or incorrectly reported figures. "An auto-assessment can be convenient if your tax affairs are simple, but don't assume it's 100% correct," says Adriana Taljaard of AT Accounting & Taxation Solutions, an accountant affiliated with Procompare. Incorrect reporting : Errors from banks, medical schemes, or other entities can result in Sars populating incorrect figures. Exclusions of non-standard deductions : Expenses such as home office costs, travel allowances, charitable donations, and unreimbursed medical expenses are not included unless captured by third parties. Undeclared personal income streams : Rental earnings, freelance work, or side businesses not reported to Sa rs wo n't feat ure in auto-calculations, potentially leading to under-reporti ng. Taljaard says Sars itself cautions that there 'might be some income sources and certainly expenses... of which Sars may not be aware', reinforcing the need for taxpayers to validate their data. "For the additional income, a P&L must be compiled in order to submit the profits or losses that the additional source of income," advises Rushaan Toefy, owner of Rushaan Toefy Financial Services in Cape Town. "As for the travel allowance, a complete logbook detailing must be provided in order for Sars to account for the extra tax savings." Procompare says if you suspect your auto-assessment may be flawed, prompt action is essential. Here's how to respond: Log into Sars eFiling and verify data : review the third-party certificates used and compare them with your own (IRP5s, IT3(b), medical tax certificates). Correct errors at source : contact banks or employers to amend inaccuracies and resubmit official data to Sars . File a complete ITR12 return : add missing income and deductions, ensuring your final return reflects the full scope of your tax situation. Submit before the deadline : most individuals must file by around 20 October. Failure to act means Sars' assessment becomes legally binding. Retain supporting documentation : keep evidence of any additions or changes for at least five years in case of an audit. Confirm your updated assessment : Sars will issue an ITA34 with your revised outcome. Review it thoroughly to ensure accuracy.
