Indo-British golfer Aaron Rai stays in top-three at Wyndham Championship
Greensboro (US), Aug 3 (PTI) Defending champion Aaron Rai shot 1-under 69 to stay in the top-three while Cameron Young added a 5-under 65 to earlier rounds of 63-62 to take a five-shot lead at the Wyndham Championship here.
Indo-British Rai, whose rounds have been 63-66-69, is 12-under and lying tied third alongside Chris Kirk (67) and Mac Meissner (70). Colombian Nico Echavarria is sole second after a round of 64 and he is 15-under and five behind Young.
On a storm-delayed second round in the morning, Rai had five birdies, three of them in a row from the 13th to the 15th and he also dropped four bogeys.
Sahith Theegala had earlier missed the cut while the other Indian American Akshay Bhatia withdrew with five holes to go. When play was suspended, Bhatia had no chance of making the cut.
Following the Wyndham Championship, the top 70 players in the FedExCup standings will qualify for next week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first of three events in the FedExCup Playoffs.
Rai and Bhatia are assured of a start at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Young, who is chasing a maiden PGA Tour title, had four straight birdies on the front nine and stretched his lead to eight shots at one stage Saturday before a series of pars saw him finish 5-under 65.
Young capped off a bogey-free 65 in the storm-delayed second round in the morning. Then he stretched his lead with his four straight birdies, including a 30-footer on No. 4 and a two-putt birdie from 20 feet on the par-5 fifth.
Young is widely considered as the best player to have never won on a main TOUR. He was runner-up seven times since his rookie season in 2021. That includes a World Golf Championship and more notably the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews.
Young, who is 20-under 190, is also chasing a place on the Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black. He was No. 9 in the Ryder Cup standings in 2023 and left off the team.
Kirk is at No. 73 in the FedExCup standings.
The Wyndham Championship is the final event in the regular season and determines the top 70 who advance to the lucrative PGA TOUR postseason that starts next week in Memphis, Tennessee. PTI Corr PDS PDS PDS

Anand delivers verdict when asked to choose between Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa and Arjun: 'They are all very close'
Legendary Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who is widely seen as the guiding force behind the current generation of Indian chess stars, added that R Praggnanandhaa would be ahead of D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi currently. read more R Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh were among the first batch of pupils at the Viswanathan Anand's Westbridge Anand Chess Academy in Bengaluru. Image: PTI/Grand Chess Tour The legendary Viswanathan Anand is responsible not just for putting India on the chess map, but for also nurturing an entire generation of stars - either through the Westbridge Anand Chess Academy, or by individually mentoring other players. It is that influence that has given Indian chess its golden generation with D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi at its heart. But what if 'Vishy', a five-time world champion who also happens to be the first chess Grandmaster from India, is asked to pick the best from the aforementioned trio? STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gukesh, Pragg and Arjun fairly level on 'pure chess strength' Anand felt that while Praggnanandhaa has the most momentum of the three at the moment, they're all fairly close to each other and there's little that separates them as far as 'pure chess strength' is concerned. 'The thing is they are so close in strength that you have to see recent momentum. I think right now Pragg. But Arjun has his moments as well. He had a lot of them last year. Now, this year he has been slower,' Anand said on a show on YouTube. 'Gukesh, of course, he won the big thing, the World Championship. So that kind of keeps him there, but I think in pure chess strength, they are all very close to each other. It is not an accident that most games between them end in draws,' he continued. The trio were part of the Indian contingent that had completed a historic golden sweep at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest last year. Gukesh had also become the youngest champion in the history of the Candidates Tournament as well as the FIDE World Championship, becoming only the second Indian after Anand to be crowned world champion. A little over a month after his historic World Championship triumph, Praggnanandhaa would go on to defeat Gukesh to win the prestigious Tata Steel Chess in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands, and had also triumphed in Superbet Chess Classic Romania, which is part of the Grand Chess Tour. The 19-year-old is also the current Indian No 1 as well as world No 4 in live ratings, with Arjun and Gukesh occupying the fifth and sixth slots respectively. Arjun, who is currently participating in the third edition of the Chennai Grand Masters where he is a strong title favourite, had become only the second Indian after Anand to breach the 2800-rating barrier. He is also fairly stronger than 'Pragg' and Gukesh in the rapid and blitz, the faster chess formats, and has also the best-performing Indian in the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour. IPL buzz: Ashwin in talks with CSK about future amid speculation of possible move
Chennai, Aug 8 (PTI) Senior Indian off-spinner R Ashwin is in discussions with the Chennai Super Kings about his future in the IPL franchise amid speculation that he might seek his release from the team. With over two months still left before the deadline for retentions, Ashwin, it is reliably learnt, has had conversations with the CSK brass about his role going forward. "It is early stages to decide on any player's future. The cut off date for retention is yet to be announced. So we have time," an IPL source told PTI. "It's a pre-auction plan to hold discussions with players and Ashwin, being a senior, is part of it. It is a mutual discussion to understand his role in the team ahead of next IPL season," he added. The 38-year-old Ashwin, who retired from international cricket last year, was bought for ₹ 9.75 crore in the mega auction before the 2025 season. It was a homecoming of sorts for the Chennai-based player, who earlier turned up for CSK from 2009 to 2015. He later went on to play for the now-defunct Rising Pune Super Giant and the then Kings XI Punjab (currently Punjab Kings) in 2018. He played nine games in the season gone by, picking up just seven wickets in a largely disappointing season for the team as it finished fifth with seven wins and as many losses. There are speculations that CSK might rope in wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, who wants to leave his current team -- Rajasthan Royals. "We have certain players in our mind to add to our line up next season. But so far, we have not had discussions with anyone, as I said there is a lot of time for player retention etc," the source said.

Wasim Akram Asks Pakistan To Recall Out-Of-Favour Star For Asia Cup: 'Would Definitely Include...'
Wasim Akram has reminded fans how the discarded batter had performed for Somerset in 2019. Fast bowling legend Wasim Akram has called for Pakistan's premier batter Babar Azam to return to the T20I squad for next month's Asia Cup, emphasising the need for an experienced player in the lineup. Pakistan dropped Babar from the T20I format after his last appearance against South Africa in December 2024. His subpar scores and unimpressive strike rate made it clear that he was no longer part of the management's plans. With the Asia Cup approaching and Pakistan still trying to determine its best combination for high-stakes T20I cricket, Akram has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reintegrate Babar into the team. He even stated that if he had the authority, he would have made that decision. 'If I had the authority, I would definitely include Babar Azam in the national T20 team. The Asia Cup and then the World Cup are approaching, and we need a senior batter. Fans may recall that when he represented Somerset in 2019, he scored runs at nearly a 150 strike rate. He has the ability to adapt his batting according to the situation," Akram said during an interview. The 'Sultan of Swing' supported his case by highlighting Babar's ability to adjust his batting style according to the situation. Akram believes Babar, being one of the 'world's best," can shoulder the responsibility and lead the team. Akram advocated for Babar's comeback, considering he has a lot left in him and his versatility to play in different positions, making him an asset for head coach Mike Hesson. 'When we're chasing 140 or 160, especially against big teams, we need someone who can take responsibility and carry the other 10 players along with him. Babar is among the world's best players. He adjusts his game to the format and match situation — he's done it in the past and can do it in the future as well," he said. 'Babar still has a lot of cricket left in him and can achieve much for Pakistan. We all need to support him. The coach can play Babar at any position he wants. In my opinion, number three is ideal for him, but it will depend on the situation. If there are more overs left, someone else could also go in to bat first," he concluded. The Asia Cup will kick off on September 9, and Pakistan will begin its campaign on September 12 against Oman at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
