Egypt Leads North Africa in Copper Exports

Taarek Refaat
Egypt has emerged as North Africa's top copper exporter, outpacing regional peers Morocco and Libya, according to a new report by Business Africa, which ranked the continent's top 10 copper-exporting countries.
The report underscores copper's rising status as Africa's second-most valuable export after crude oil, with total trade value reaching an estimated $35 billion in 2024. While 52 out of 54 African nations export copper in some capacity, 98% of the continent's copper export value is concentrated in just 10 countries.
Egypt's growing prominence in copper exports reflects its accelerated push to expand its mining and metals sector, part of a broader economic diversification strategy. The report highlighted Egypt's key export markets, including Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, positioning the country as an increasingly important supplier in regional and global copper supply chains.
'Egypt's rise in copper exports supports its ambition to become a key hub for mineral resources in the region,' the report noted, pointing to infrastructure improvements and regulatory reforms in the mining sector.
Africa currently accounts for 15.3% of global copper exports, a sizeable contribution given rising global demand for the metal, which is critical in renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, and industrial manufacturing.
Beyond North Africa, the continent's leading copper exporters include:
DRC
Zambia
Tanzania
Republic of Congo
Namibia
Nigeria
These countries dominate Africa's copper output, supplying the bulk of raw materials to global markets.
The report also notes that China remains the primary destination for most African copper exports, reflecting the Chinese economy's unrelenting demand for raw materials to fuel its manufacturing and energy transition sectors.
'The Chinese market continues to play a central role in shaping copper trade dynamics across Africa,' Business Africa said.
As nations worldwide invest heavily in green technologies and electrification, copper demand is expected to rise further, presenting strategic opportunities for countries like Egypt to cement their positions in the global value chain.

Israel inks $35 bln deal to export 130 bcm of natural gas to Egypt until 2040 - Economy

Israeli NewMed Energy has signed a landmark deal to export 130 billion cubic metres (bcm), or 4.59 trillion cubic feet (tcf), of natural gas, worth around $35 billion, to Egypt until 2040. The new deal, signed with Blue Ocean Energy (BOE) — which buys natural gas from the Leviathan reservoir for Egypt — marks the largest export deal in Israel's history and the most significant agreement since the discovery of natural gas reservoirs in the country. Under the terms of the new deal, the export of gas to Egypt is expected to continue until 2040 or until all contract quantities are fulfilled, a NewMed press release said. The Leviathan reservoir began exporting natural gas to Egypt shortly after commencing production in January 2020. To date, it has provided around 23.5 bcm of natural gas to the Egyptian market, with a contracted annual volume of 4.5 bcm (0.16 tcf) through Blue Ocean Energy, alongside spot quantities sold on an interruptible basis. The original export agreement with Egypt, signed in 2019, is set to conclude once the total contracted quantity of approximately 60 bcm is sold, which is projected to occur in the early 2030s. The new agreement will replace this existing contract and is divided into two stages. Stage one involves the sale of 0.7 tcf (approximately 20 bcm) of gas. This stage is expected to take effect in the first half of 2026, following the completion of two key projects designed to enhance the production and transportation capacity: 1. The connection of a third pipeline from the Leviathan reservoir to the production platform, increasing gas production to over 0.5 tcf (approximately 14 bcm) per year; 2. The enhancement of the Ashdod-Ashkelon transmission pipeline, currently being carried out by INGL, which will increase the natural gas transmission capacity in the EMG pipeline by an additional 0.07 tcf. Once the first stage comes into effect, it will allow the sale of 0.7 tcf of gas to Egypt annually. Stage two involves an additional 110 bcm (3.88 tcf) of gas. This stage will commence after the completion of the Leviathan expansion project and the construction of a new transmission pipeline from Israel to Egypt via Nitzana. This Leviathan expansion project will significantly boost the annual natural gas production capacity in Israel by approximately 30 percent, bringing it to around 21 bcm (0.74 tcf). The new pipeline via Nitzana will help accommodate increased export capacities from Israel to Egypt. The total gas exports for stage two will amount to approximately 110 bcm (3.88 tcf) in varying annual quantities, which will raise the total sales from Leviathan to Egypt to an annual quantity of around 0.42 tcf (approximately 12 bcm). Thus, the overall export of approximately 130 bcm (4.59 tcf) of natural gas, based on a pricing formula primarily linked to Brent crude oil prices, is projected to generate around $35 billion in revenue for all partners involved in the reservoir. The finalization of this deal will facilitate a final investment decision for the Leviathan expansion project. In February, the Leviathan said it plans to increase annual production capacity to approximately 21 bcm, with potential future expansions. The expansion plan includes drilling additional wells, enhancing subsea systems, expanding processing facilities on the platform, and potentially laying a fourth pipeline between the reservoir and the production platform. Leviathan is the largest natural gas field in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the largest in the world. According to the latest prospective resources report, the Leviathan reservoir contains approximately 600 bcm (21.2 tcf), and production is expected to continue until at least 2064, according to discounted cash flow projections. Egypt Eyes Solar Panel Manufacturing Boom Amid Global Clean Energy Surge

Ahmed Emam Egypt's Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) has released a new report outlining major future opportunities for localizing the solar panel manufacturing industry, as global demand for clean energy continues to accelerate. The report reveals that the global photovoltaic (PV) solar energy market reached 447 gigawatts in 2023—an 87% increase compared to 2022. According to projections by the International Energy Agency, global demand is expected to rise to 860 gigawatts by 2035 and 900 gigawatts by 2050, largely driven by China's mass production, which has significantly reduced costs and increased accessibility. In recent years, the manufacturing base for solar technologies has shifted from Europe, Japan, and the United States to China. The report highlights China's strategic investments of over \$50 billion in solar technology manufacturing, enabling it to dominate more than 80% of the global solar supply chain. This shift has brought down the cost of solar electricity systems by 90% between 2010 and 2023, creating an opening for emerging markets like Egypt to join the global value chain. Egypt, the report suggests, stands to benefit significantly from entering this industry. The growing global and regional demand—especially in the European Union, which is expected to remain the largest importer of solar panels through 2035—presents a promising export opportunity. Additionally, local manufacturing would support Egypt's own ambitious solar energy projects, including upcoming plants in Lake Nasser and Nag Hammadi, and established facilities such as the Benban Solar Park in Aswan. The report also stresses the strategic importance of reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels by investing in renewable energy. Producing solar panels domestically could lower import bills and improve energy self-sufficiency. Egypt possesses several natural and industrial advantages to support this transition. The country has an abundance of quartz—an essential raw material for solar panels—found in multiple regions, including the Eastern Desert and Marsa Alam. It also has significant reserves of rare earth elements, which are vital for producing advanced solar technologies. In 2023, Egypt inaugurated a quartz production complex in Ain Sokhna, marking the first of its kind in the country and across the Arab and African regions. That same year, construction began on a new silicon production complex in New Alamein, aimed at manufacturing local silicon products, including polysilicon, a key component in solar cells and electronics. To further support localization efforts, Egypt has established the National Council for the Localization of Electronic Chip and Solar Cell Technology. The council is tasked with developing national strategies, overseeing implementation, addressing challenges, and proposing solutions to drive the industry forward. The report concludes by emphasizing the importance of establishing integrated industrial and educational zones dedicated to solar panel production, especially in New Alamein where related infrastructure already exists. It also recommends launching investment promotion campaigns to support high-capital manufacturing projects and drawing lessons from China's success in scaling up solar production. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
