Al Foster, jazz drummer for Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins, dies at 82

Al Foster, the jazz drummer who performed in groundbreaking bands with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Sonny Rollins, has died. He was 82. Foster's partner Bonnie Rose Steinberg told NPR in a statement that Foster died 'from a serious illness' at his home in New York City. Foster's daughter, Kierra Foster-Ba, confirmed the death in an Instagram post. Foster's relentlessly creative and adaptable percussion work spanned eras and genres within jazz, driving elegant bepop and raucous fusion groups alike. Davis wrote in his memoir 'Miles: The Autobiography' that Foster's drumming 'knocked me out because he had such a groove and he would just lay it right in there ... Al could set s— up for everybody else to play off and then he could keep the groove going forever … for what I wanted in a drummer, Al Foster had it all.' Foster played on Davis' studio album 'Big Fun' and his live albums 'Dark Magus' and 'Agharta.' Davis, in turn, paid homage to Foster's agile brilliance with the funk single 'Mr. Foster,' recorded during his sessions for the 1972 album 'On the Corner.' Aloysius Tyrone Foster was born in 1943 in Richmond, Va., but grew up in Harlem in a family of musicians. First inspired by drummer Max Roach, his career brought him into stages and studios with saxophonists Sonny Rollins (a fruitful partnership that would span decades) and Joe Henderson, who led Foster on the seminal double live album 'The State of the Tenor, Vols. 1 & 2.' Rollins said he drew on his and Foster's similar childhoods for his song 'Harlem Boys.' Foster played in groups with jazz titans like Art Pepper, McCoy Tyner and Horace Silver, among many others. In 1978, he joined the supergroup Milestones Jazzstars with Tyner, Rollins and Ron Carter, and made his debut as a bandleader that same year with 'Mixed Roots.' Later in his career, he collaborated with guitarist John Scofield, saxophonist Joe Lovano and bassist Dave Holland in the group ScoLoHoFo. He frequented the Upper West Side club Smoke, whose in-house label released his two final albums, including 2022's 'Reflections.' Foster is survived by four daughters — Michelle, Kierra, Monique and Simone — and six grandchildren. His son Brandyn died in 2018.

Justin Bieber Blasts 'the Audacity' of 'Telling Other Humans They Deserve Something' in Latest Cryptic Post

Justin Bieber shared a new, cryptic Instagram post In it, he slammed "the audacity" of "telling other humans they deserve something" The post comes days after Hailey Bieber announced her company, rhode, was acquired by e.l.f. cosmetics Justin Bieber shared a cryptic post on social media. On Tuesday, June 3, the pop star shared an Instagram post blasting "the audacity" of "telling other humans they deserve something." "Telling other humans they deserve something is like raising someone else's kids," the post, which appeared on a purple backdrop, began. "Who are you to tell someone what someone should or shouldn't have." Added Justin, 31: The audacity. That's not your place. G-d decides what we deserve." While it was unclear what the "Sorry" hitmaker was referring to, some users appeared concerned by his post. A few commenters came to Justin's defense, wishing him "continued growth" and encouraging people to give him "a break." Others noted they were "proud" of him. One user encouraged Justin to take a "social media break," while another worried that he was "crashing out again." Others responded to the "Stay" artist in lukewarm fashion, telling him to "grow up" and saying that his apparent lack of celebration for Hailey Bieber over her Vogue cover is "hypocritical" and that his wife — whom he married in 2018 before celebrating with a star-studded wedding in 2019 and shares son Jack Blues — "deserves better." Justin's post comes days after Hailey, 28, announced that her beauty brand, rhode, was acquired by e.l.f. cosmetics for $1 billion. At the time, he screenshotted her announcement and added it to a carousel. However, he didn't comment on it. Before celebrating his wife's first-ever Vogue cover last month, Justin shared images from the shoot with a caption revealing he once told Hailey she would "never be on the cover of Vogue." "Yo this reminds me when Hailey and I got into a huge fight," he wrote on May 20. "I told hails that she would never be on the cover of vogue. Yikes I know, so mean." At the end of the post, he apologized Hailey saying, "So baby u already know but forgive me for saying u wouldn't get a vogue cover cuz clearly i was sadly mistaken." Later, Justin deleted the caption and added a series of emojis: "🤷🫵🏻🫶🏼🥹." In the Vogue story, the "Yummy" musician praised his wife, saying, 'I've done a lot of dumb things in my life, but the smartest thing I've ever done was marry Hailey.' Justin also addressed the online criticism she has faced. 'She's in the spotlight, and has the attention because of her effortless knack for style, business, art and fashion," he said, adding that "she makes being a mom and wife look easy.' Justin's latest social media post also comes amid growing concerns over his mental health following several vulnerable social media posts from the singer. Recent Instagrams have included messages about his "anger issues", having "nothing to prove," feeling "unworthy," and a cryptic post about letting "go of hate by first acknowledging it's there." A source close to the Biebers told PEOPLE in April that 'Hailey is not on the verge of wanting a divorce or leaving him. It's just completely untrue,' They added: 'If anything she's sad about how hard everyone is being on him now that he finally is coming back out of his shell.' However, a second source close to Justin painted a different picture of their lives. 'She's been in tears about his behavior lately,' the source revealed. 'Things have gotten bad quickly. She's genuinely scared something bad is going to happen to Justin." They further noted that Hailey is "very loyal to him" and is "not walking away." Read the original article on People
