PETALING JAYA : The government's stance on nuclear power is to treat it as a long-term option rather than an immediate solution, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said today.
Citing the complexity and safety concerns associated with the technology, he said Malaysia was still in the early stages of studying its feasibility as part of the country's future energy mix.
'We are not saying that we are going ahead (with it). What has been approved is that we will consider nuclear as part of the potential energy mix,' Bernama quoted him as saying at an international energy week conference in Kuching.
Fadillah, who is minister for energy transition and water transformation, estimated that it would take Malaysia at least 10 years to implement nuclear energy.
He said extensive groundwork was being carried out, including international benchmarking and regulatory planning.
'I've visited the UK, France and Russia, and we will also be going to the US, China and South Korea. We are analysing all available technologies, including the safety and environmental implications,' he said.
Fadillah emphasised that nuclear adoption must comply with strict international processes and treaties, particularly with regard to the impact on the environment.
'Only after we sign all 18 required international treaties, and receive approval at that level, can we even begin to consider incorporating nuclear energy in our national energy supply.'
He also highlighted the importance of public acceptance, saying that without widespread support from Malaysians, the nuclear option would not proceed. 'We must engage the public and secure their buy-in,' he said.
Separately, Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said nuclear energy was not currently relevant for the state, given its abundant and diversified renewable energy sources.
He told reporters that Sarawak had hydro, gas and solar energy, adding: 'With what we have, I don't think Sarawak needs nuclear energy.'
He said Sarawak remains focussed on becoming a renewable energy powerhouse, targeting the production of up to 15 gigawatts by 2035 through existing clean energy sources.
Abang Johari also said Sarawak was exploring energy production using hydrogen from water as a safer, cleaner and cheaper alternative to nuclear fission. 'We have the water resources to support it,' he said.

Kuala Lumpur 2040 plan ensures balanced property development for all

KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL 2040) prioritises balanced urban growth, ensuring no community is left behind as the city develops. Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif emphasised that the plan follows the 'Kuala Lumpur for All' principle, promoting equitable opportunities across society. 'MADANI housing and affordable homes are not just slogans, but have been directly integrated into the PTKL 2040 guidelines,' she said in an exclusive Bernama Radio interview. Developers with land exceeding five acres must provide genuinely affordable housing, not just units that appear within budget but remain financially out of reach. The plan also requires at least 30% of land in large-scale residential projects to be reserved for open spaces. This ensures urban residents enjoy better living conditions and environmental sustainability. A detailed zoning map specifies designated areas for residential, commercial, industrial, and green spaces. 'This prevents haphazard development and protects existing communities from being marginalised,' Maimunah explained. PTKL 2040 is more than a physical blueprint—it serves as a guide for investors, government bodies, developers, and residents in creating a structured, sustainable, and inclusive city. The plan aligns with the Malaysia MADANI vision, focusing on people-centric progress under the Federal Territory (Planning) Act 1982. Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 24, PTKL 2040 took effect on June 11 and will shape Kuala Lumpur's regulatory framework until 2040. - Bernama

Visiting Beijing, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praises China's AI firms Deepseek, Alibaba and Tencent as ‘world class'

BEIJING, July 18 — China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao told Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on Thursday that he hoped multinational companies, including Nvidia, would provide high-quality and reliable products and services to Chinese customers, the ministry said in a statement. Huang said the Chinese market was very attractive, and Nvidia was willing to deepen cooperation with Chinese partners in the field of artificial intelligence, according to the commerce ministry's statement released on Friday. Wang said China's policy of attracting foreign investment would not change and the door to openness would only open wider. Nvidia declined to comment further. During his third China visit this year, Huang, the founder and CEO of the world's most valuable company, also met with Ren Hongbin, chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and the country's Vice Premier He Lifeng. Chinese officials told Huang they welcomed foreign companies to continue to invest in the country, the Nvidia CEO said at a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday. At the event, Huang described AI models from Chinese firms Deepseek, Alibaba and Tencent as 'world class' and said AI was 'revolutionising' supply chains. Huang also said Chinese customers' demand for its H20 AI chip, which was released from US export controls this week, is high but no purchase orders have been fulfilled yet as it awaits US government approval for export licences. Nvidia has also announced it is developing a new chip for Chinese clients called the RTX Pro GPU, which would be compliant with US export restrictions and designed specifically for smart factories and for robot training purposes. — Reuters

Anwar Refutes Claims Of Interference, Affirms Judicial Appointments Followed Due Process

PUTRAJAYA, July 18 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has firmly rejected allegations of interference in the recent appointments of Malaysia's top judges, asserting that the selection process was carried out in full accordance with constitutional procedures. Anwar stressed that the appointments, including that of the new Chief Justice, were discussed at the Conference of Rulers and received the consent of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, reflecting a smooth and lawful process that upholds the Federal Constitution. 'This Conference of Rulers meeting demonstrates that the process went well and adhered to Article 122B of the Constitution. This stands in stark contrast to the accusations that were made earlier. 'I hope that with this explanation and the decision consented by His Majesty the King, the false accusations and unease that have circulated will come to an end. 'For weeks, we were subjected to slander and criticism, but today it is evident those claims were baseless,' he told reporters after Friday prayers at Surau Istiqlal here today. The Prime Minister also refuted the allegations of political meddling in the selection of candidates for top judicial posts, including what he described as slander against Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh. 'He still has many years in service. His name was never proposed, discussed, or submitted to the King. So, where did these allegations come from? It appears to me that these came from politically motivated figures within the legal community. I don't believe these views reflect the stance of the broader legal fraternity. I hope this clarification will clear everything,' he said. Anwar further emphasised the need to end the culture of slander and baseless accusations targeting the judiciary, warning that such attacks could undermine the credibility and integrity of one of the nation's key institutions. Late last night, the Federal Court Chief Registrar's Office, in a statement, announced that Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of Malaysia.
