On Actor Vijay's Poll Alliance Snub, Tamil Nadu BJP's 'Common Goal' Reply

NDTV07-07-2025
New Delhi:
Tamil actor-politician Vijay said 'no' last week to possible alliances with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party or ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam before next year's Assembly election.
Vijay - whose fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam will make its electoral debut in 2026 - said he would never join hands with the BJP, which he called "our policy enemies and divisive forces", or Chief Minister MK Stalin's DMK, which he accused of being 'secretly owned" by the former party.
The BJP, however, appeared undeterred by Vijay's putdown.
On Monday the party's Tamil Nadu unit boss, Nainar Nagenthiran, told reporters the "common goal between us (i.e., the BJP and TVK) is that the DMK should not be in power".
"I suggested an alliance based on that shared idea. Ever since the BJP and AIADMK (the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, the DMK's arch-rival) reunited... DMK is obviously worried."

"That is why they push the 'B-team' narrative..." Nagenthiran declared, referring to Tamil Nadu ministers' counterclaims in October last year linking Vijay's TVK and the BJP. Those claims came after the actor said his main 'enemies' were the BJP at the centre and DMK at the state levels.
Vijay's entry into Tamil Nadu politics has stirred the pot before the 2026 election.
The 51-year-old superstar is not expected to win the 118 seats needed to form the government, but is expected to hoover up enough votes (and seats, maybe) to make it difficult for either the ruling DMK (and its ally, the Congress) or the opposition AIADMK (and the BJP) to do just that.
Nagenthiran's appeal to Vijay (last week and today) underscores the BJP's sentiment on this issue; "They (the TVK) should decide who shouldn't come to power and take a call accordingly... they should analyse who would benefit from such a decision (not allying with the BJP)."
The BJP's ally, the AIADMK, remains equally welcoming of Vijay; party boss E Palaniswami said Saturday, "All those who wish to oust the DMK from power are welcome to join the alliance."
The BJP and the AIADMK were thumped by the DMK in 2021; EPS' party won 66 seats and the BJP just four, compared to the 133 swept by Chief Minister Stalin's party and the Congress' 18.
Popular Tamil actor Vijay is his party's chief ministerial candidate (File).
The DMK-Congress alliance picked over 45 per cent of the votes.
Last year's Lok Sabha election was even more of a thumping; the DMK and Congress won all 31 seats they contested and picked up eight more courtesy smaller allies.
The BJP and AIADMK - contesting independently after a temporary break-up - won zero.
To stop the DMK from winning a second consecutive term, the BJP and AIADMK need something extra, a boost of popularity and votes that, they hope, will come from Vijay's TVK.
Meanwhile, the DMK has been more dismissive of Vijay's 'no'; the party's senior leader, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi, said, "The announcement may have come as a shock to some... but the people are clear about who their enemies are. All the best, but victory belongs to the DMK."

BJP MLA says he is ready for public debate with CM on Centre's grants to Mysuru

BJP MLA for Krishnaraja T.S. Srivatsa on Monday said he is ready for a public debate with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the Centre's grants to Mysuru district. He accused the Chief Minister of not speaking the truth during the Sadhana Samavesha that was held in Mysuru recently, where Mr. Siddaramaiah had claimed that the Centre had not given anything to the district. Responding to the Chief Minister's challenge for a debate on the Centre's aid to the district, Mr. Srivatsa told reporters in Mysuru that he accepts the challenge. 'The Chief Minister can make it public how much is the Centre's contribution and how much funds the State government has granted to the district,' he said. He alleged that the Sadhana Samavesha was organised with the sole agenda of targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He argued that the Centre's contribution to Mysuru's development has been significant, citing ₹2,627 crore for highway development, funds for railway underbridge works, and ₹1,393 crore under Jal Jeevan Mission. He alleged that these works were not mentioned at the event. Mr. Srivatsa said Mysuru received over ₹3,000 crore under the MUDRA scheme benefiting over 5.38 lakh people, with total grants under the scheme so far reaching ₹10,000 crore in the district. He also said 6,000 people were trained under the PM Vishwakarma scheme. Accusing the State government of protocol violations during the samavesha, Mr. Srivatsa questioned why the programme included All India Congress Committee in charge Randeep Surjewala's name but not that of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. 'What is the connection between Mr. Surjewala and the samavesha?' he asked. He alleged that although Congress leaders described the event as a government programme, it turned out to be a Congress event and a show of strength for the Chief Minister. Former MLA L. Nagendra, party spokesperson M.A. Mohan, and others were present.

Congress Calls Chhattisgarh-wide ‘Chakka Jam' Over ED Arrest Of Ex-CM Baghel's Son

The protest, scheduled from 12 noon to 2 pm, will see road blockades across district headquarters, with major highways and commercial intersections targeted for disruption. Senior Congress leaders, including Deepak Baij, Charandas Mahant, TS Singhdeo, and Bhupesh Baghel himself, are expected to lead the agitation. In Raipur, the National Highway near VIP Chowk and Magneto Mall will be blocked, while Dharsiwa will witness a large-scale mobilisation by rural Congress workers. The party has framed the protest as a response to what it calls politically motivated misuse of central agencies to intimidate opposition voices. The ED arrested Chaitanya Baghel on July 18 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, citing his alleged involvement in a liquor scam that reportedly operated between 2019 and 2022. According to the agency, the scam caused a loss of over Rs 2500 crore to the state exchequer. Investigators claim Baghel received Rs 16.70 crore in proceeds of crime, which were funnelled through his real estate ventures. The ED also alleges that Baghel colluded with businessman Trilok Singh Dhillon to disguise illicit funds as legitimate property transactions, including Rs 5 crore routed through flat purchases in the Vitthalpuram Project. Further, the ED has traced over Rs 1000 crore in suspect transactions linked to Baghel and his associates, including coordination with liquor syndicate figures and alleged transfers to the then treasurer of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee. The agency has already arrested several individuals in connection with the case, including former IAS officer Anil Tuteja and former Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma. Congress leaders have dismissed the charges as part of a broader campaign to dismantle the party's leadership in the state and divert attention from resource exploitation issues. Bhupesh Baghel has publicly accused the BJP-led central government of orchestrating the arrest to suppress dissent over environmental concerns. As the ED continues its investigation, the Congress's chakka jam is expected to test both public sentiment and political fault lines in a state already simmering with tension.

BJP falsely trying to fixKarnataka govt over GST row: Dy CM Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Hitting back at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said on Monday that the BJP is trying to fix the Congress-led government in the state over the GST row. Speaking to the media near his residence in Sadashivanagar, Shivakumar responded to queries on the issue. "BJP is trying to eat the banana and wipe it on our nose by issuing GST notices to small traders," the Deputy Chief Minister said, while targetting opposition BJP in the state. "The BJP-led Central government had fixed an annual turnover limit of Rs 40 lakh back in 2019 and directed all state governments to comply with it. The BJP government must stop harassing the poor. There are lakhs of small traders dealing in vegetables, fruits, tender coconuts, and flowers. Already, 14,000 traders have been served notices. Our leader Rahul Gandhi had earlier raised his voice against GST. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will discuss this matter with officials to explore how we can help the people and provide appropriate guidance," Shivakumar added. Asked whether the state government would write to the Centre about the issue, he replied, "We will definitely write. Justice must be ensured for our people. Karnataka is the state that pays the highest amount of GST. This is causing hardship to our poor and middle-class traders." Asked whether the notices were issued because the Chief Minister gave targets to officials, Shivakumar clarified, "Officials have issued notices based on the rules framed by the Central GST Council. These notices are being issued due to pressure from the central committee." Asked about Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala's next visit to the state, he said, "On July 25, the Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) and I are visiting Delhi. The Parliament session is also underway. This is all the information I currently have," he added. Shivakumar has also told that he will not be able to meet anyone for the next three days due to other commitments. He said that he will not be able to meet the public, party leaders or workers during this period. "I regret the inconvenience. I request that no one misunderstand this," he appealed in a statement to the media. Shivakumar said on Sunday that small traders and street vendors are facing problems due to the GST introduced by the BJP government at the Centre. "Notices are being issued to all those who are doing business of more than Rs 40 lakh and notices are being issued to tender coconut sellers, vegetable vendors, etc. This is the achievement of the Union government. The traders don't have to worry, we will take necessary actions to protect their interest," he added. "We have made several appeals to the Centre for funds for the last two years, but none of the BJP MPs are speaking for the state. They are not concerned about the poor of the state. Karnataka gets only Rs 13 for every Rs 100 it gives to the Centre in the form of taxes," he said.
