NFL Network Predicts Cowboys' ‘Hogs' Will End Championship Drought
Dallas Cowboys' left guard Tyler Smith knows the buck starts and stops with the offensive line under Brian Schottenheimer, and now, a 10-year NFL veteran is following suit with his thoughts.
After an offseason that saw Tyler Booker be drafted in the first round to "replace" Zack Martin, coupled with the expected improvement of Tyler Guyton, Cooper Beebe, and Terence Steele, Dallas has a solid starting five to protect Dak Prescott.
Plus, with Conor Riley as the offensive line coach, along with coordinator Klayton Adams, the Cowboys have two coaches who know how to get the most out of the group.
As such, NFL veteran Leger Douzable believes that, due to the Cowboys' makeup along the line, Brian Schottenheimer's team will break its NFC Championship drought.
"This is the one reason this Cowboys team will make it back to the conference championship, I know it's been 30 years, it's going to be the hogs up front," Douzable said on NFL Network. "If they can develop and mesh, this team has a chance to go to the conference championship."
My word, that is a big if, Mr. Douzable.
First off, we can't call Dallas linemen "Hogs." That's the classic Washington nickname and we're a bit bothered that NFL Network would commit that gaffe.
But with three first round picks along the line, and a center in Beebe who per Schotty, already has command regarding checks made at the line of scrimmage, and the solid play (we hope) of Steele, this offensive line might be able to hold up in both the run and pass game to give Dak time to dissect defenses.
Granted, we aren't anointing them as anything yet, so we will hold fire, but training camp will be the first "proper" look at what Schotty is dealing with.
And once real NFL bullets start flying, we can properly assess this offensive line that Douzable thinks will be the reason Dallas' infamous championship drought will end.

Reflecting on his offseason workouts with his new team, Metcalf said the Steelers' offense is trying to replicate a key trait from the defense. 'The defense is great, just going against them after yesterday — high energy group, very communicative,' Metcalf said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. 'I was joking with Calvin [Austin III] that for the first play out there, I couldn't hear any of the checks that Mason [Rudolph] — or the snap count that Mason was saying, 'cause the defense was talking so much. It's just refreshing to see a defense that communicates, and we're just trying to model our game after them.' Advertisement For fans who remember the slide the Steelers took down the stretch in 2024, Metcalf's comments are curious. The back seven was consistently one step short in the back half of the season, a struggle that – from afar – seemed to be a symptom of poor communication. However, there is reason to believe Pittsburgh improved on this front through the offseason. Much of the defense remains unchanged, granting the unit the privilege of continuity. One position the Steelers upgraded was at corner, swapping out Donte Jackson for Darius Slay, adding Super Bowl pedigree and over a decade of experience to the room. On offense, Pittsburgh underwent more drastic changes, although its true talent level remains fairly similar. Last year's leading passer, rusher, and receiver have all found new homes. Metcalf and Rodgers will play the biggest roles in the 2025 offense, and it's hard to imagine the unit flourishing without a strong rapport between the two. With Rodgers' accuracy and Metcalf's proclivity for stretching the field, fireworks could very well be in store. The Baltimore Ravens will enter the 2025 season with one of the best rosters in football and some of the highest expectations. Once again, it's Super Bowl or bust for Baltimore, and with high-profile stars on both sides of the ball, the bar has justifiably been set. Advertisement In 2024, the Ravens were the second-most dangerous team in football on the ground, trailing only the Philadelphia Eagles and 2,000-yard rusher Saquon Barkley. The addition of Derrick Henry gave them a closer, a punishing back who can make sure the four-minute offense operates well. Henry rushed for 1,921 yards and 16 touchdowns and contributed 139 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. If there's a hitch in Baltimore's plan, Bleacher Report suggests it would be Henry struggling in 2025. 'Father Time finally catches up to a 31-year-old Derrick Henry just after signing a big, new contract, and the Ravens move in the wrong direction as a result,' Brad Gagnon wrote. However, Ravens star quarterback Lamar Jackson is key to Baltimore surviving regression from its starting running back. Advertisement The biggest risk in paying Henry is the opportunity cost of signing another contributor in a Super Bowl window. At 31, it's entirely possible that he stumbles down the cliff awaiting so many running backs. But even a diminished version of Henry isn't likely to be a detriment to the offense. The Ravens' run game was elite with Henry in 2024, finishing second in the league in expected points added per rush. In the four preceding seasons, Baltimore ranked first, 11th, second and third, respectively. This offense doesn't need Henry at his best to be elite. He makes them more dangerous in January and is a significant part of the team's plans, but Jackson's mobility has made every backfield configuration a strong one. There's no reason why that shouldn't continue in 2025. Henry has proven to be an outlier in his aging and durability. He should be expected to dominate again with Jackson's gravity making his life easier. Advertisement It goes without saying that the worst-case scenario for the Ravens is Jackson going down. In virtually any scenario, the two-time NFL MVP has the talent to weather the storm. The Baltimore Ravens have one of, if not the best running back room in the entire NFL, and there is a chance that it could be pushed over the top this offseason. Advertisement In a recent article by Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports, he puts together a list of teams that could pursue star running back Travis Etienne if the Jacksonville Jaguars decide to cut him. And one of the teams he mentions is the reigning AFC North champions. "Despite Derrick Henry's contract extension, he isn't getting any younger, and Keaton Mitchell has yet to prove to top over 1,000 yards in one season," Palacios wrote. "Etienne is more proven if he can stay consistent and take over as the starter once Henry runs out of gas." The Jags selected Etienne out of Clemson University in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but his snap count was vastly reduced for whatever reason in 2024. The 26-year-old running back had just 150 rushing attempts this past season, which was 18 less than the player who is listed as his backup on the depth chart, Tank Bigsby. Advertisement Two seasons ago in 2023, Etienne finished with 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. He was also able to show his versatility with 476 yards and a touchdown through the air. Henry will still be the lead back through the 2027 season, when his contract expires. But after that, the plan is not clear yet for the Ravens, but going after Etienne could be a very intriguing option for the team to explore.
