Mikaela Shiffrin's Leg Day Workout Is Brutal

Yahoo03-07-2025
We're back to closely examining the offseason workouts pro skiers post to Instagram, (last time I actually tried Lindsey Vonn's workout) which, if anything, probably means I will be in a world of pain at the gym after giving them a try myself. Ski racing all-time great Mikaela Shiffrin has been spending plenty of off-season time in the gym, and with her fiancé, fellow ski racer Aleksander Kilde. It's likely helpful that these they share a profession. Kilde and Shiffrin are in incredible shape, and regularly do crazy ski racer workouts together. Maybe true love is just being able to keep up with each other in the gym?Last week, Shiffrin revealed that the two had been apart since March. A few days later, the ski racing power couple posted an Instagram Reel together of a series of mobility exercises, and a few of your average skier exercises like single leg squats, lateral squats with 20kg plates on a barbell, dumbbell swings with what looks like something *heavy*, and a handful of other things that make my quads hurt just watching them. Tap or click below to watch Shiffrin workout, and dance, with Kilde in the recent video. Keep reading for Shiffrin's challenging leg day workout.Want to keep up with the best stories and photos in skiing? Subscribe to the new Powder To The People newsletter for weekly updates.
Shiffrin then posted a video to X several days later of her off-season leg day workout. IIt looks like the workout consists of a few sets of barbell squats with 20kg plates, single leg squats with dumbbells, and thrusters with dumbbells. Shiffrin completes the workout with a shot of espresso and a jump in the ocean (lake?).We don't know how many sets or reps Shiffrin is doing, but odds are it's brutal. Notice how she struggles to walk down the stairs to jump in the body of water! Tap or click below to watch.
Now that's my kind of leg day. If the espresso and swim are included, I'd actually give this brutal workout a whack, and like Shiffrin, would probably have to take the stairs one step at a time afterwards. With the Olympics coming up, it's exciting to see Shiffrin training so hard, but its also really lovely to see her post about spending some quality time with her fiancé. Even though these workouts seem like they need superhuman strength, its a sweet reminder that pro skiers are people too!Mikaela Shiffrin's Leg Day Workout Is Brutal first appeared on Powder on Jul 2, 2025

Erik Menendez returns to prison after hospital stay: report

Erik Menendez, one of the brothers serving a 50 years-to-life sentence for the 1989 murders of his parents in Beverly Hills, has returned to state prison in California after being hospitalized last month for kidney problems, according to a family member. "My dad is out of the hospital and back at the prison, preparing for our upcoming parole hearing,' his stepdaughter Talia Menendez wrote on Instagram stories, TMZ reports. Menendez was temporarily removed from the San Diego-area Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility last month and hospitalized for about a week for what his attorney called a 'serious medical condition.' The treatment included multiple surgeries to remove kidney stones, TMZ reported at the time. Menendez, 54, and his brother Lyle, 57, are both serving lengthy sentences for the 1989 killing of their parents José, a prominent record executive, and Kitty Menendez, in a case that has dominated headlines for decades. In May, the pair's life sentences were reduced to 50 years to life, making them eligible for parole. They are slated for back-to-back parole hearings on August 21 and 22. Last month, a judge ordered Los Angeles prosecutors to explain why the original murder convictions should not be re-examined, given new evidence that emerged, that could support the brothers' claims they killed their parents over alleged persistent sexual abuse at the hands of their father. The Menendez brothers' first trials ended in hung juries and the second saw the judge exclude evidence including testimony from family members who said they had witnessed or heard about the alleged abuse. Earlier this year, California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered a 'risk assessment' investigation into whether the brothers are fit to re-enter society. The governor could grant the brothers clemency though he has indicated any decision regarding their sentences would not occur until after their parole hearing. The Menendez case has been the subject of media interest, books, films and documentaries for years. Last year, their story was fodder for the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Kim Kardashian visited the brothers in prison that year and has advocated for their release.

NFL Top 100: Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield is No. 50, will play the Cardinals in 2025

This week, the NFL began its sixth week revealing players in the "NFL Top 100." This week, players 41-50 will be revealed. On Monday, a player the Arizona Cardinals will face in the back half of this coming season came in at No. 50. Player No. 50 is Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield. He was not in the top 100 in 2024. Mayfield led the Bucs to the playoffs for the second straight year, winning the NFC South, giving the Bucs five straight playoff appearances. He had his best season in 2024, completing 71.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He was third in the NFL in passing yards, third in completion percentage and second in touchdown passes. He also led the NFL in interceptions. "The ultimate teammate," said running back Rachaad White, Mayfield's teammate. Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon, No. 58 in the top 100, said Mayfield "wakes up, like he says, feeling dangerous." He is the closest thing to Brett Favre this generation has seen. He is a gamer, an incredible competitor. He "can make some crazy plays," according to 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Saints safety J.T. Gray said Mayfield has "a Superman ability." However, he has never beaten the Cardinals. He is 0-3 against the Cardinals and Kyler Murray, his old buddy at Oklahoma. The Cardinals have a six-game stretch to end the 2025 regular season with four games against 2024 division winners and two teams that just missed the playoffs last season. That stretch opens in Week 13 with the Bucs on the road. Can Murray and the Cardinals keep Mayfield winless against them one more time? We will see. Why Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona planned meeting if team had lost to Cubs

CHICAGO – If Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona seemed as locked in as his players during this week's high-adversity series opener at Wrigley Field, maybe it's because he was. 'I was so into the whole game,' he said, 'because we wanted to win. And nobody felt sorry for themselves or for us. 'In fact, if we'd have lost, I probably would have talked to them.' Blindsided by an unplanned bullpen game for the second day in a row after their long, wet ordeal in the Bristol Motor Speedway sideshow game over the weekend, Reds reliever after Reds reliever kept the Chicago Cubs in check for a comeback, 3-2 win Monday night No need for a message after a finish like that. Besides, veteran Brent Suter did the inspirational honors well enough after the game anyway, Francona said. But had they lost another tough one after all that rain, extra travel and the sudden finger blister that waylaid their hottest starting pitcher in the second inning? 'That's what mean,' Francona said. 'We've had a lot thrown at us. And sometimes your margin for error's less. 'OK, then let's not make errors. Let's just play the game the way we know how.' 'This can be our time to shine. We don't have to feel sorry for ourselves.' The Reds went from the mess of Bristol, Tennessee, into the teeth of a final 50-game stretch run that opened with three against the Cubs and two of the next three series after that against two more of the NL's top teams: Philadelphia and Milwaukee. 'Divisional games are huge, especially where we are in the season,' said closer Emilio Pagán, who earned a career-high 24th save with a 1-2-3 ninth. 'And so we talked about it as we're not going to have any excuses moving forward.' That seems to especially apply to bullpen core that has carried a heavy load at times – none more than Scott Barlow, who has pitched in six of the Reds' last seven games, including two innings Monday. 'Everybody down there just wants the ball at all times,' Barlow said. 'We've just kind of had the attitude of, 'Bring it on.'
