LANGAT 2 WATER TREATMENT PLANT SETS THREE NATIONAL RECORDS IN MBOR

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 (Bernama) -- The Package 3 of Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (LRA) made history after earning recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for three national achievements, showcasing the country's engineering innovation and commitment to environmental sustainability.
The three records set were Malaysia's first pipe conveyor-type water treatment waste transport system, the longest pipe conveyor system for water treatment waste at 1.918 kilometres and the longest shaftless screw conveyor system at 46 metres.
Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad (PAAB) chief executive officer Zulkiflee Omar described the three projects worth RM210 million as a transformative step for Malaysia's water sector.
"This was not just an ordinary infrastructure project, it represented significant engineering innovation focused on sustainable environmental governance," he said at the handing over of the certificates of recognition from MBOR here today.
The LRA Langat 2 is capable of treating up to 1,130 million litres of water per day (MLD) and generating up to 400 tonnes of treatment waste daily, depending on the quality of raw water channelled from Sungai Semantan in Pahang through a 45-kilometre tunnel across the Titiwangsa Range to Hulu Langat.
According to Zulkiflee that conventional waste management had required up to 96 lorry trips daily, creating road safety hazards, significant carbon emissions and community disruption.
However, the new pipe conveyor system automatically transferred waste almost two kilometres to a dedicated landfill site near the Bunting Balance Pond, completely removing heavy vehicles from public roads.
'This system not only saves fuel and reduces carbon emissions, but also supports the country's commitment to sustainable climate change,' he said.
He noted that the system can transport 120 tonnes of waste hourly during its eight-hour daily operation, preventing more than 35,000 lorry trips annually, thereby enhancing safety, boosting operational efficiency, and strengthening environmental protection.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia and Thailand are entering a new phase of stronger bilateral ties driven by the close relationship between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, says a senior Thai official. Thai foreign minister Maris Sangiampongsa said the rapport between the two leaders reflected a growing partnership focused on cooperation across multiple sectors, especially in border regions, reported Bernama. 'The prime ministers have built a strong bond. This opens up opportunities, not just in trade and investment, but also in security,' he told Bernama during the 46th Asean Summit held here recently. He added that regular communication between both leaders had strengthened mutual understanding and paved the way for more strategic collaboration. Thailand remains a key economic partner for Malaysia. In 2024, it was Malaysia's seventh-largest trading partner globally and third-largest within Asean, with total trade reaching US$25.03 billion (RM114.56 billion). Trade between the two countries rose to US$3.96 billion (RM17.65 billion) from January to February this year, up from US$3.67 billion (RM16.80 billion) in the same period last year. Both governments are committed to developing the shared border into a vibrant economic corridor, focusing on trade, investment, and cross-border infrastructure to enhance connectivity. Efforts are also underway to integrate special border economic zones to further boost trade and investment in the border areas, which currently account for over 30% of total bilateral trade. Maris described joint border development as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation. He pointed to sectors with high potential – including the halal industry, palm oil, and rubber – as areas for further collaboration. 'While both governments can facilitate opportunities, success depends on strong private sector participation,' he said. 'There are solid policies in place that can support greater business collaboration and regional development.' Anwar and Paetongtarn have maintained regular contact through meetings and phone calls. They have met three times to date: in Putrajaya in December, Bangkok in April, and most recently at the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur. KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand and Malaysia's bilateral relationship is entering a new high point, with the prime ministers of both nations showing strong commitment to strengthening ties and charting a path towards greater cooperation. Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa underscored this momentum, noting that the strong bond between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra signals a more robust and forward-looking partnership. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar and Prime Minister Paetongtarn, Malaysia and Thailand have witnessed a deepening of cooperation, particularly at the border areas of (both countries). 'Whenever both leaders meet, I can see the strong bond between them. This is a good opportunity for Thailand and Malaysia to work closely together, not only in trading and investment, but also in human security,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held here, recently. He said that while both leaders can facilitate and coordinate the opening up of more opportunities, the results can only be achieved with the active participation of the private sectors of the two countries. Anwar and Paetongtarn have maintained good communication through in-person meetings and phone conversations to discuss issues of mutual interest and concern. Ringgit Strengthens Against US Dollar, Court Pauses Block On Trump-era Tariffs
WORLD By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- The ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar today, boosted by improved investor confidence in emerging market currencies after a US court temporarily halted a decision to block most Trump-era import tariffs, an analyst said. At 8 am, the local note surged to 4.2180/2485 versus the greenback from Thursday's close of 4.2390/2475. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell below the 100-point mark to 99.278 points after the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit granted a reprieve from a US Court of International Trade ruling that would have blocked most Trump-era import tariffs on Wednesday (US time). Additionally, he said US economic data look weaker with Initial Jobless Claims rising more than expected to 240,000 last week against consensus estimates of 229,000 while the Continuous Jobless Claims accelerated to 1.91 million for the week ending May 17 from 1.89 million in the prior week. "Apart from that, the second estimate for the first quarter of 2025 US gross domestic product (GDP) contracted 0.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter seasonally adjusted annualised rate (SAAR), slightly better than the first estimate of -0.3 per cent but lower than the 2.4 per cent expansion in the previous quarter. "It appears that the US dollar weakening trend is likely to continue today, benefiting the ringgit," he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam said traders and investors will be looking at Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) inflation data. Consensus is pencilling the headline PCE and Core PCE at a moderate pace of 2.2 per cent and 2.5 per cent in April against 2.3 per cent and 2.6 per cent in the prior month. Therefore, the ringgit is expected to trend higher today, possibly around RM4.21 and RM4.22, owing to a weaker US dollar outlook, he added.
